One of my favorite pieces from '05. Amethyst Dassel, on the hull of an APC, looking over her shoulder, as a chem-storm rolls in, from over the ruins of a city, somewhere in the northwest of the US.

" The sky goes all crazy, jus' before one dese storms, weird colors, you bet. The rain, it's real bad, bleach out yo' fur, burn yo' eyes. I seen folks get sick, die, from bein' in one o' dem storms.
We be just outside some city, I t'ink Boulder. Place took de missile nose-on, ain't nothin' lef' but scrap an' fused concrete. No point, goin' for de scav, it still bein' hot, even after two year.
'Mazin', what de wind do with fires. 'fore de war, dis be a verdan' forest. Now, just be sticks, and the ashes."

Chem-storms are a common threat, in the PostWar world. The rain is toxic, corrosive, loaded with heavy metals, industrial contaminants, and depending on location, high levels of radiation. It can cause burns, bleaching of the fur, blindness, and if consumed, will most likely kill you, sooner or later.
