When the war with the Fire Salamons began, Magnus left to be with Snow and they escaped with other refugees to a large jungle where with the help of a discovered Jungle Salamon tribe Snow was able to create her father's barrier which protected the refugees from the war, unknowingly spending three thousand years within until her father found them. No, they have normal life spans like you and I, Elder isn't exactly immortal either as his life energy it tied to his world's life energy. Snow only managed to life that long because she had used Elder's barrier spell to protect the refugees from the Fire Salamons if they had ever found their hiding place, but the barrier not only protected them from everything outside the barrier, it also slowed time down to the point that for them only three years had passed when outside the barrier it was three thousand years.
