The Great Big Auric Refsheet (by Ashe Skyler)
If you are an artist looking at this refsheet, please don't let it intimidate you! The detail is there to help you and answer questions you might have, not to constrain you. If you are drawing Auric, I expect that it will be in your own style and I don't expect your interpretation to include every detail that is in this refsheet.
This is an overview of a HUGE color refsheet for my hawk winged golden jackal 'sona, Auric. There are links to larger detail views below. This was an attempt to give an artist everything they need to know to draw him all in One BIG Reference Sheet! The full size version is actually 4200 x 2100 pixels (or about 22" x 11" when displayed so that the text and details are easily visible) and is available by email to artists. I tried to make this answer most questions that have been asked when his refsheet was not so detailed, but I'm not expecting every artist to need or care about every detail that is on this huge refsheet.
There are larger versions of all of the panes of this enormous refsheet to allow the details to actually be seen:
-- left info pane & color palette: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15638178/
-- main pane: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15638429/ [his mane is too large across his shoulders in the main ref at the upper left]
-- upper main pane: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15638752/
-- lower main pane, wing & feather details: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15638913/
-- jewelry pane & humorous poem: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15684991/
-- anatomy pane ('dem bones): http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15703063/
-- facial expressions pane: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15703167/
-- example outfits pane: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15703278/
-- accessories, weapon, and notes pane: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/15703371/
We nicknamed this refsheet "The One Refsheet" (or the 'refsheet of doom') and I composed the humorous poem about it that you'll find on the jewelry pane. Despite the size, this refsheet is just for Auric’s winged digitigrade '”furry” form, he can also be drawn as plantigrade or without wings or in a feral 'gryphon' form, see my gallery for some examples of those other forms.
The color scheme in the palette shows exact hex codes for convenience but it is just the general coloring scheme and it doesn’t need to be exact, especially in real media. I know the bone count isn't going to be particularly helpful to 99.476% of artists, but we had the drawings from an anatomy/Halloween drawing so they got included.
Auric's wing pattern is from a Buteo called a Long-Legged Buzzard, which is not a vulture. Americans tend to use the word "buzzard" to refer to a vulture, while Europeans call a Buteo (Hawk) a Buzzard and the Long-Legged Buzzard is a Eurasian bird which has a range very similar to that of the Golden Jackal.
This started as as an assortment of different pencil and digital drawings that were rearranged into a new layout and edited and modified as we refined Auric's colors. The art was all done by artist Ashe Skyler, who does the Just Another Day webcomic at http://jad.raven-wing.net/ which I recommend reading if you enjoy winged characters with attention to details. She is great to work with on commissions and I can't thank her enough for her help and patience (oh, lots and lots of patience). She has posted versions of it on her DeviantArt account here and it is here on FA as well: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15257063/
Refsheet 'to-do' update list:
0) replace the upper picture with his new ref: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/17506543/
a) make his mane & chest tuft more petite, particularly across his shoulders
a2) try to get a more integrated and layered mane, like this: http://sta.sh/01xywo166yli (by CadmiumTea)
b) gradual transition of colors on his facial pattern
b2) try to make the color transition from his mane to chest to be more subtle, like http://www.furaffinity.net/full/17931316/
c) the detail drawing of his outer wing feathers should actually look more like the red-tailed hawk feather in this: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/7925724/ Leather Feathers - Group 2 - by windfalcon_art (but that detail might just confuse some people)
c2) update the white streaks on his outer pinions in the back view
d) add a text comment that the number of 'bars' on his secondary feathers change from two 'bars' to one 'bar' at the wing 'elbow'. That fact isn't obvious from the refsheet but it is helpful for other artists who are doing other poses and wing angles.
e) I'm also tempted to try to add some text/arrows/circles that help explain some feather terminology like primary, secondary, covert, 'carpal patch', and 'bar' (perhaps in another layer), since that can be helpful when I'm trying to describe something with text.
f) Put color blobs on the main sheet. Based on watching art streams I've seen artists grabbing colors right off the turnaround drawings rather than using the color palette. That made me wonder about putting little circles with the colors right next to where they appear on the turnaround drawings.
g) On the side view of his folded wings, the top of the wing (the 'wrist') should be lower, just below his muzzle/chin (rather than the top of his head), to avoid any confusion about how 'tall' they should be when folded.
h) Update the tail drawings, here are good examples of his tail: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/17814159/ (Auric by Rokito), http://www.furaffinity.net/full/18236558/ (Shanku and Auric, Construction ), http://www.furaffinity.net/full/18235919/ (Shanku and Auric, Halloween 2015)
i) probably remove the chibi and weapon pane on the right, they'll have their own sheets
j) fur pattern markings should be blended, especially under the chin.

Thanks! This is what happens when a detail oriented artist and detail oriented commissioner have been working together for a while on multiple different drawings of a character. AsheSkyler and I both joked about how big and detailed it grew. It originally started much smaller and slowly grew as Ashe and I did more artwork of Auric and then incorporated bits of it into the refsheet to try to answer every question that arose or serve as a reminder of decisions I'd made.
Still it has probably grown to a point that commissioning such a detailed fursona became super expensive <.< I mean, I've recently finaly decided and have my commissioned and it still feels unfinished like my life. So not all details can go in there for there are too many <.<, even so, isn't over detailing as "bad" as no detail at all?
Truly impressive reference sheet with a lot of attention paid to details. However, the art itself could be much better, and mixed styles don't look too well. The artist has done a great job with Auric's feathers; every relevant detail is shown. Amazing character, awesome reference.
Thanks.
I know what you mean about the odd appearance of the mix of different styles, but the mix of styles on the refsheet was actually intentional (if rather unusual). Based on the previous version of this refsheet I had discovered that some artists have difficulty if a refsheet shows a very different art style than theirs or the medium is much different, for instance showing a detailed realistic style color refsheet to an artist that is does simple cartoonish black and white sketches. To help deal with the difficulties I had with that issue I eventually intentionally included different art styles on the refsheet to help show artists that a wide range of interpretations were acceptable and visual examples of what he might look like in different styles.
For the art quality, that was reduced a bit when it was shrunk by FA (there is a full size version available), but not doing too high quality of art was sort of intentional as well since this was originally put together to be a reference so we prioritized usefulness as a reference over high quality art (many of the drawings started as simple pencil sketches and got upgraded and then digitally colored). Also, less skilled/advanced artists seem to find it less intimidating if the refsheet art isn't of stunning quality. Finally, you might be surprised how difficult it is to find a detail oriented artist who is willing to work with you on a refsheet for a winged character, Ashe was great to work with on this.

>the mix of styles on the refsheet was actually intentional (if rather unusual).
Indeed, it looks strange but good to know there's a reason behind this.
>For the art quality, that was reduced a bit when it was shrunk by FA (there is a full size version available)
At least in this aspect DA is better. Also, you don't resize submissions manually (or was that just a figure of speech)?
>less skilled/advanced artists seem to find it less intimidating if the refsheet art isn't of stunning quality.
I guess you're talking about F's. I've found out that some less skilled artists (including a few ones I've done art trades with, also including me before I started to pay some attention to the species first and only then to the character) may end up copying certain unintentional features from the ref sheet (and having trouble with un-learning that). At least their feelings won't be hurt, which is a good thing, I suppose.
Alas, accurate references are a problem with almost any style of art.
>Finally, you might be surprised how difficult it is to find a detail oriented artist who is willing to work with you on a refsheet for a winged character, Ashe was great to work with on this.
Because only an INT can stand another INT for a long time? :)
Also, I've just noticed the new fullbody ref, it's beautiful, though I have no idea why you haven't updated the main ref sheet with it yet (I guess there probably is a good reason).

According to the description text for this submission: "The full size version is actually 4200 x 2100 pixels (or about 22" x 11" when displayed so that the text and details are easily visible) and is available by email to artists. I tried to make this answer most questions that have been asked when his refsheet was not so detailed, but I'm not expecting every artist to need or care about every detail that is on this huge refsheet."
The description also has links to individual submissions for each 'pane' (or is that pain) of the refsheet which are larger and more easily visible. I even included the words that appears on the refsheet in the text descriptions of those submissions so artists whose native language isn't English could use Google Translate to read the text.
