The lion lost his mate due to a plane crash and became extremely depressed and bitter. The dog is a medium who was contacted by the spirit of the deceased mate and tried to get ahold of the lion but the lion pretty much threatened to beat him if he ever talked about his dead mate again. So from what I assume right now, he let the spirit of his dead mate possess him so he could talk to the lion to get him to move on because his spirit is unable to rest due to his grieving.
