Though personally I find it bullshit that raves find their way onto that list. Most "rave furs" Ive seen have never been to a real rave, and frankly some of them I would never want to see a real rave. Its a different world.

Haha, this sort of thing always amuses me. People who say they aren't furries, but wear fursuits and look at/draw furry porn. I can at least mildly get away with such a claim because I don't like/draw the porn, don't wear fursuits, don't attend cons, don't have a fursona, etc. A lot of people wouldn't even buy it coming from me though.
Well, I would clarify that as a "furry" is a fan of the usage of anthropomorphic animals for the -sake- of using anthropomorphic animals.
For instance, I know people who love the classic "Looney Tunes" because they're funny, not because they feature talking humanoid animals.
Or they read "Usagi Yojimbo" because they see it as an exciting, well done fantasy/adventure comic, not because the characters are all humanoid animals.
For them, neither is "furry", nor does their enjoyment of such make them "furry".

Yup, I've heard it defined like that as well. As I understand it, when the fandom started up in the 80s by a small group of people it was focused on anthropomorphic animals and "funny animals", under which the Looney Tunes example you stated does apply. It focused on all kinds of media--drawings, television, movies, books, comics, what have you--anything that featured or even simply contained anthropomorphic animals.
From what I've been able to gather throughout the years things get a little fuzzy (no pun intended) after that. :) There have been debates on how far does one narrow down the furry definition, as in how it's applied. It's even been debated on how much something has to be anthropomorphized before it's considered "furry enough". Are Japanese cat-girls "furry"? What about a quad fox but can seems very much to be sentient and sapient, even if it doesn't seem to speak?
And then of course like you say, maybe the creators of a certain comic, series or movie didn't intend it to be "furry", but they do feature anthropomorphic animals. I've always sort of seen "furry" as an informal, fandom term for an anthropomorphic animal. Nothing by a major comic or studio would market stuff to furries--at least right now--because there just tends to be a LOT more children who like cartoons than there are furry fans.

Many of the people I personally know who identify themselves as "furries" unfortunately have a bad habit of supporting some truly dreadful, awful material -just- because it features anthro animals. Remember that "Father of the Pride" show? More than a few furry fans of my acquaintance watched it -not- because they liked it, but (to use their words) "because it's a Furry Show, and we should support it."
I think experiences like that have tainted my view of the fandom. I know people who will never, ever, EVER check out many excellent comics I recommend to them because the casts of said comics are all completely human.

You just absolutly described my little brother. He is not a furry, but he has a cat fursona, draws anthro art, collects plushies and has ears and a tail and has been to a furcon (I haven't even been to a fur con!), but TOTALLY NOT A FURRY and claims that all furries are sick and weird.

I'm from Hungary, but i sure can use a simple program like that. I also noticed that you written the word KHANISNOTAMUSED, so i figured out that the program can be manipulated to wich words/characters to show. I just needed the info from the link. I really hate that kind of denial (and I know sooooo many people that fit this comic). People like to distance themselves from the 'furry' title because in some (read: many) circles it has negative connotations... but just because you deny the word doesn't make you any less furry!

i just have to say this...if anyone truly badmouths this, and says they dont give a shit about who's a furry or not...doesnt that contradict itself? if you truly didnt care, you wouldnt post a thing, you wouldnt do anything...Im a furry, i find solace in the fandom, and love calling myself one. I respect that you posted something like this ^_^ its neat and shows that there are people out there who just want to engage in some of the acts of a true furry, although i use that term loosely since there is no true definition of it...

I've called myself a fur in the past, I consider the folks in the fandom to (mostly) be fun loving semi-sane people, but more recently I've found it hard to consider myself the hardcore fan... but yes, hypocracy in some areas exists, where people will do so much stuff but not consider themselves furry... or vice versa "I like animals so I must be a furry" either way, it kinda sucks...

I have a lot of anthropomorphic characters... I make them because they're are awesome and fun to draw. Animals especially- There are so many cool species out there that most people have never heard of, so I love making them into characters to hopefully teach people about them.
Once I open my lemur-zoo, I plan on getting a mascot costume of a lemur... And I'd probably commission a fursuit maker for it since they make them look so nice. And I'm sure that if I got one, I'd happily wear it around the zoo if I didn't hire someone else. It seems like it would be fun- I love to teach kids, and I think they'd respond well to it. I'd consider wearing it to a con to advertise, but I'm afraid I'd attract zoophiles or something. Which I don't want around my animals. So, yeah, not sure about that one...
BUT MAAAAAN. When I first heard about furry stuff and got into anthro characters (Age 10. Sad, eh?) I used to be waaay more into it. I played Furcadia and roleplayed as a dragon and stuff.. Although I guess that was the extend of it. Still. AHAHA. Looking back, I probably would consider myself a furry back then. But at this point, no. I've kind of learned exactly why I draw anthros and all that good stuff... And, after thinking, I just don't think I'd consider myself furry. I don't really have a whole lot of interest in it, anything involved in it, or anthropomorphic characters in particular. In fact, probably the only reason why I look at ANY anthro art is to see if I can find someone drawing an accurate lemur. It all just kind of spawns from my interest in studying them, so eh...

Once I open my lemur-zoo, I plan on getting a mascot costume of a lemur... And I'd probably commission a fursuit maker for it since they make them look so nice. And I'm sure that if I got one, I'd happily wear it around the zoo if I didn't hire someone else. It seems like it would be fun- I love to teach kids, and I think they'd respond well to it. I'd consider wearing it to a con to advertise, but I'm afraid I'd attract zoophiles or something. Which I don't want around my animals. So, yeah, not sure about that one...
BUT MAAAAAN. When I first heard about furry stuff and got into anthro characters (Age 10. Sad, eh?) I used to be waaay more into it. I played Furcadia and roleplayed as a dragon and stuff.. Although I guess that was the extend of it. Still. AHAHA. Looking back, I probably would consider myself a furry back then. But at this point, no. I've kind of learned exactly why I draw anthros and all that good stuff... And, after thinking, I just don't think I'd consider myself furry. I don't really have a whole lot of interest in it, anything involved in it, or anthropomorphic characters in particular. In fact, probably the only reason why I look at ANY anthro art is to see if I can find someone drawing an accurate lemur. It all just kind of spawns from my interest in studying them, so eh...

I have a lot of anthropomorphic characters... I make them because they're are awesome and fun to draw. Lemurs especially- There are so many cool lemurs out there that most people have never heard of, so I love making them into characters to hopefully teach people about them.

See, this is me.. I though, have given up the long winded responses because when people ask me are you a furry, they have a hard time listening to -well no but I draw animals, they're fun for me, I grew up with cartoons where all the main characters were almost all animals and it totally influenced me, I dont think I AM an animal and I'm not into the animal sex at all, I have just as many human characters, I just respect fur designs!- they usually want a yes or no..I kind of settle with "I guess"

I think I know why this is getting so much attention. You have this...knack for saying what we all know to be true but either don't realize or don't know how to phrase. Then you not only figure it out, you put it in words so saturated with sarcasm that...I dunno. I'm sleepy. You get the idea.

...I don't get it. The fandom is not a community or an institution, so it can't really define what a furry is and say "this is what a furry is; if you don't do x, y, and z, you're not a furry". The majority of furries might believe you have to do x, y, and z in order to be a furry, but a majority opinion is not the same as an universal truth. Furthermore, there is no "rite of membership" - so to speak - in order to join the fandom, so no one can actually say if someone is even a furry. And as not every furry is able to agree on what the term "furry" means, no one can authoritively say what interests are required for one to belong to the furry fandom, i.e., to be a furry.
I think this is true to some extent, but I would say if you don't have a "fursona" or any Mary Sue'd furry characters then you're not really a furry. I don't consider myself to be a furry, however I still *LIKE* furries, I view it as more of an interspecies mixing sort of deal. Sorta like, I'm not Japanese, but I like Japanese culture. I don't think liking furries makes me a furry and I've certainly never imagined myself as being animal like in any way nor would I like to be either...however I still like furries. I just wouldn't want to be one myself.
True on a few levels. Myself personally, I'm not a furry. I used to be all into the fandom and whatnot, but I've gotten out of it. I'm on FA to support the mass of friends I made through DA who migrated to FA to post their furry arts.
I have a character who is, in fact, a dog, but for the sake of whenever I want to do a trade with a close friend most are not able or comfortable with drawing human characters, and animals are far easier for them to do. Rare is it that I draw an anthro character anymore and when I do, it's always on behalf of a trade.
I don't think I'm in denial but if other people judge me to be, eh, thats what floats their boat.
I'm comfy not being a furry. The porn weirds me out in many a way, but I'll forego discomfort for the sake of offering up critique and support to a friend. Furries in real life can be a bit bizarre (sorry guys, but you are) but it's cool. Going to an art school helps you cope with the wierd. xD

I, for one AM a furry, thank you! (..or scalie..) And that's because I love anthropomorphic animal characters and would like to see them finally come of age in the mainstream. Well.. they kind of already did in the late 60s, and eventually gave rise to the furry fandom in the process, but somewhere along the way they seem to have reverted to the realm of childishness again, leaving us furries to handle the adult side of things, which is apparently very stressful and difficult for some of us to cope with, one way or the other. (Try moderation. And maybe a step or two back from the big picture. )
Food for thought; All it takes is numbers, and the littlest bit of pride to have a voice and become more accepted. You know, if we'd like to see some mainstream anthropomorphic stuff that isn't for babies ever get made in any of our lifetimes at the least. *fumes a bit*

Actually, if I felt the need to specify... I started my little "career/hobby" doing transformation art with an animal bent. I sort of got swept into the "furry" genre given what my critters/victims turned into... and I drew this junk long before I knew the term furry existed. So yeah, based on your terms, I feel all superior or something. Really, I liked the superpower-like abilities that various animals were built to operate with, be it speed, flight, amphibious existance, etc. I also like the usually-mellow nature of... well, a naturescape, be it desert, ocean, or anything in between. (IE a low human-populated zone). So yeah, take beings with the astounding capabilities of animals, the calming aspect of nature, and the human capability to appreciate both, and I guess you have a "furry"... at least in my given base definition: a humanoid with mix of human and animal traits... as well as those who have a preference for them for one reason or another. If I wanted to dodge the definition, I suppose I would say I am a superhero artist with a penchant for "functional anatomy"... sort of like Superman didn't originally fly, he jumped good ;p
Truth be told, I don't understand the need to be afraid of the term. I've kept fur-haters and trolls (again, more catchall terms for saving breath) out of my hair by simple logical reasoning... I admit that some folks just hate to hate, but they reveal themselves when they can't come up with a decently intelligent counter-response.
Methinks the term furry isn't really derogatory in the strictest sense... there are good and bad furs out there. I guess the best way to run it would be to find a good negative tag for the embarrassing faction of animal-quality-lovers, be they vore, rape, bestiality, etc. but good luck being the one to start and spread such a label (or set of labels).
