Thought i'd put together a reference sheet for mifth's animated Grunge brushes. (google for where to download current set).
This is grunge brush 1 - 20 at 50% opacity. (There is a grunge brush 21, which is a slightly leaf shaped pointalist texture, quite useful, but i had 20 paces here and laziness rules.) The brushes animate, rotating, so that you don't get any repeating patterns. If you set the opacity lower, 20% or so you get more complex subtle textures.
While these texture a rather nifty with dark values, it is with light values over darker colours where they really do niftier nifty things.
i love the heck out of these brushes, one of hundreds of reasons to glom onto Krita.
Update: The latest versions of the mifth brushes have opacity set to pressure, so you don't have to turn the opacity down as suggested above. There are also cloud and vegetation brushes, etc etc etc....

This is awesome. I love this kind of insight. I've never heard of krita outside of you using it.
I've heard of gimp I believe as popular, and Photoshop. Unfortunately I couldn't afford Photoshop and I wanted vectors and decent functionality, so I bought a manga studio.
It's ok, but there are basically no cool filters for neat effects, and I've no idea if it can do clever brushes like this. It's got a nice paint thing, but it's all manual. Nothing abstracted away via clever use of brushes or filters.

Krita is open source software originally designed for Linux OS such as Ubuntu, Mint, etc., but is now available for Windows (works great, have that on another comp) and a beta version is available for Mac.
And it is free. No BS, no ads, no spyware, whatever. It comes from the open source movement where the philosophy is that soft ware, like our countries, belongs to the people. Contributions are welcome but required on open-source software. In otherwords you could download it right now for free and start using it right away and no bs adds or whatever will follow. Sort of renews one's faith in some people being more-or-less-okay or something like that.

Comes with oodles of basic brushes and then there lots of free brush packs available from Krita:

"Vasco Basque's" set is quite extensive - one of the best, but Krita.org has v.3 - go to his own page and you'll find v.4. The mifth grunge and foliage etc brushes should also be there. "Vasco Basque" is "Grindgod" over at dA and the brushes are also available for download there.
Cazu's brush set is also quite nice. Follow directions to install brushes depending on your OS.
