When animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

True, but it seems like the birds are just birds - not sentient. So why don't the wolves farm and catch birds instead of mutilating other sentient, thinking, feeling animals?
It's not something I intent to start a fight about, or a critique of the artist or anything, just food for thought. I know wolves need to eat meat to survive of course and maybe it's just not realistic/they're unable. But it's still so rough because they're literally killing and tearing apart life from other thinking creatures that are the same level of intelligence. This story has a good premise, still gives me chills though. Because just think of how it'd be in real life and stuff.

Am I reading your text all funny cause it's 6am or did you actually say crows are not intelligent beings? Because they are among the most intelligent creatures that live on our planet. They are socially skillful, able to learn communication with a huge variety of other species, they have great puzzle solving skills (better than a huge majority of mammals), they also display clear sings of understanding differences between other species: others need to catch prey and some need to flee. A wolf or another big predator has no developed understanding that the prey they catch has similar needs to survive or that they feel pain when harmed, to wolves their pray is just food like grass is to a horse.
Nono, I know ravens are HIGHLY intelligent in real life. But compared to the sentient creatures in this comic, I see them portrayed as animals with the same level of intelligence as here - that is, not anywhere near as intelligent as sentient, self aware creatures like the mammals are portrayed here (as human level). Not saying crows are lesser, just food for thought. Also, based on the pages so far, it's clear that they're all human level intelligence (developed language and etc) like the pine martens in the previous pages.
I'm not arguing ravens are not intelligent and social creatures; I know that they are, and they're actually one of my favorite animals. Just, in this comic all the mammals seem to have human level intelligence and still the wolves kill the bison and they kill other creatures with the same level of awareness as them. Not saying it's wrong, but can you imagine if every cow, every chicken had the ability to talk to you, to think critically and dwell on its situation? I think that'd be hard for me, even if I needed to do it to survive. Just asking some food for thought, really!

The way I've seen it so far in this comic is that it's about animals being mostly animals with a twist, but with words so it's understandable to us. The crows could also be viewed as pets / hunting tools, humans modded wolves for that case for themselves aswell. We didn't eat dogs cause they're useful for getting more&better food :P (although if all animals have the same intelligence differences as irl, wolves are pets of the crows in that case haha)
Pigs also have the same intelligence as a 5 year old child, we still eat them too :o

I think he got that idea mostly cause everything has be depicted as anthromophic except the crows so far. That said, no real reason to assume they aren't on same level as everything else.
And as was stated before, no good or bad when hunting to survive, now if we see a few wolves chasing something down and killing it then just leaving it... its not really for survival anymore and could be taken as bad. ^^;;

In the eyes of the the wolves this is a necessary thing for them to survive. They show joy in finding something to eat and even share it with the ravens. On the other hand in the eyes of the bison and martens they seem like savage beasts. Just a little thought to think about for this comic.
I agree! It's very real too, I love how Teagan has inspected nature to learn of these small things most people wouldn't even believe happens. My outdoor cats would do the same - it was a truly inspiring thing to experience to see them building up a relationship with an entirely different kind of species over the years. Communication with other species is a thing many animals know a lot better than most humans do.
I like how you show the contrast beetwen the two group. ( pine martens <--> wolves ) Hah, I trying to see the story from an another viewpoint and in this case everything is totally understoodeable. I having a strange feeling when see the wolves joy and martens fearful face. Not bad, .. just strange feeling. Good storytelling.
A little analogy when I'm look the scenes I thinking about we humans are not different from "these animals". Winners, losers this is how the world is run.

Hmmm... no blood on their muzzles.
Having had wolves I can most certainly attest that they are not in the least fastidious until their bellies are bloated. ;D
I can also see that they've tamed the crows. Perhaps the same crow(s) we saw in the first few pages that made the martens fearful.

And thus we howl.
"A deep chesty bawl echoes from rimrock to rimrock, rolls down the mountain, and fades into the far blackness of the night. It is an outburst of wild defiant sorrow, and of contempt for all the adversities of the world. Every living thing (and perhaps many a dead one as well) pays heed to that call. To the deer it is a reminder of the way of all flesh, to the pine a forecast of midnight scuffles and of blood upon the snow, to the coyote a promise of gleanings to come, [...]"

For my part, I just killed a steak sandwich and I think maybe I should howl too.

The ravens led to wolves to the bison. All that cawing earlier -- that was them communicating "We've found food -- come and kill it!" No wonder the wolf is giving the ravens their share of the hunt.
And no wonder the martens were so uneasy when they heard all that "KAW KAW" etc. -- it could have been them the ravens spotted...
