Got around to making a ref finally for this guy.
He's an androgynous Japanese Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)
-No genitalia, male pronouns
-Can commune with spirits/mythical creatures, can walk in the spirit plane
-Mute

A beautiful and proud choice ineed! I recognized quickly, that he is a Japanese Sika, his design is really realistic:)
If I'm correct the Deer, in the japanese culture is the messenger between the God(s?) and between mortals. If so, I understand the spiritual thing with him.
Nice work!

Thank you! Yes, I definitely referenced photos and video of C. nippon while making this ref., I'm really glad it shows.
In Shinto, deer (among other animals) can be messengers to the gods. Sometimes it's specific to one god (for instance, foxes are said to be messengers for the harvest god Inari), but I'm not sure if deer are specific or not.
