the meek inheriting the earth being furry, because the post eco-pocalyptic earth not being an environment that will support unmutated humans.
yes the apocalypse is the environment, so eco-pocalypse. that is the fate we are racing headlong toward because of the combination of using combustion to generate energy and propel transportation and of the excessive and thus out of balance size of human population. not a comet or a war or some god floating down out of the sky, but the accumulated result of hundreds of years of resource mismanagement. its probably not too late to reduce the effect, but its something that only becomes obvious enough for a lot of people to see after far too many tipping points, and we've already passed so many already, to do very much, if anything, about. while it's marginally possible the effects might not be totally catastrophic, its totally whistling in the dark to make that assumption. that we can continue to get away as much ignorance and indifference as we may seem to have for a few hundred years in the past. eventually it catches up, like it did at chaco canion, only today its the whole planet.
(what hillary would have done would not have been sufficient, but what chump is doing is pretty close to the worst possible)
inundated croplands become breading grounds for rapidly mutating diseases as average annual temperatures rise, even if all the ice on the planet were to melt could only raise sea levels by a few tens of feet. and many croplands are low lying with openings toward the ocean.
slow agonizing death from hundreds if no thousands of rapidly mutating forms of disease, compounded by malnourishment, is the fate awaiting humanity as a result of all of these factors that contribute to and result from climate change.
so yes, i would call that "eco-pocalypse".

In my world, the Furs were created by mutating viruses, although they were not natural. From some biowar lab, belonging to which side is unknown, something escaped. Mankind could not survive, but it was found that grafting to certain mammal stocks would allow the continuation of intelligence and civilization. Feline, canine, and lagomorphs worked best. Because time was of the essence, many of the false starts were not destroyed and some survived. Because of lack of communication and the impossibility of life in the hot zones, no one knows how many different intelligent grafts survived. There are even rumors of reptilian peoples, but these are just rumors.
There are some who are convinced that they have seen humans...

indeed, if one side were working on something like that, almost inevitably many 'sides' would be, and quite probably are.
and things do escape from labs, no matter how secure, there's always a leak of some kind somewhere.
there are a couple of other world builders on f.a., with visions similar to what is shared between ours:
gene storm and endless realms, also share related 'furry morning after' scenarios.
however it comes about, many things humanity is currently doing, make eco-pocalypse, or something related, not unlikely.
furrs are a possible silver lining, a happier thought at least, then assuming complete extinction to be inevitable.
