i think your not wrong, i think part of his BF has fused into the core, and wants just that
his BF part of the core is lonely and wants his mate, (or EX in this case) and it trying to grow to get him...
and as the EX runs it makes the BF sad and confused, making him angry and consume more of the world to get at his EX

Okay that's a fuckin' disaster. I'm clearly not alone in my wonder how massive this catastrophe will be....though judging by the evidence and foreshadowing in the prior strips, I think "universal screwball" is a fair assumption.
Also, I have to like this strip because you used one of my favorite panic exclamations. "Fuck me sideways" indeed :P
