Well, to answer your question just a little bit - when I do digital paintings such as this one I combine the well known vector illustration of a character with photoshop painting that doesn't include anything fancier than a mere simple brush and awful lot of strokes. People tend to ask me what I used to create the wooden boards for instance - well, again, brush of 5px size. Nothing else. Of course, it's very important to work with references, photrography, and learn to immitate the materials and find the best way of painting them in. As for the colors, I usually create a separate document with color maps, see how the colors would blend together and what feel can I get from them. From this I simply swatch them when drawing the real thing. It's also great to work with photos to soak up inspiration, but recently I found a great inspiration in this project called colourlovers.com
