TwitterWhen animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Oh geez, that show. All I know of that cartoon is what I've seen in a few clips on youtube, but good lord that show doesn't pull any punches. As bad as Watership Down. Both stories show the true gritty brutality of the world, but that's what makes them more gripping and spectacular. When you, the reader, become so attached to the characters that their trials, tribulations, and ultimate fates actually affect you on an emotional level, it's a sign that the writer has succeeded in creating a good story.

yep. it's anime's ALL ANTHROS MUST DIE trope, done right. farthingwood animals was really sad at times, but, very well written.
as for this comic...i already have a list of three characters i know will die. wont give names...but.....they have leomon written all over them. i just will read the story and see how it happens. cus, so far. it's a good story.

yep. i quited on anime for good after crap like digimon tri or hunter x hunter.....i want anthro characters, not cannon fodder, so, american animation is doing a great job on that, zootopia, mao mao, regular show and others...there's crap like final space...but....that thing is over. so i dont care.
but, again, on the case of this story, yeah, a bodycount is to be expected, and that bodycount will hurt us all, cus we care about these guys.....i am very sure which characters will die....based on anime tropes......i am sure all of you know who will go first. so...we better wait for it...and enjoy his presence the best we can.

                    yep.
and again. unlike most anime with anthros today, the writer of this story already made it clear that there will be casualties. i mean, the tragedy is announced. this is not a comedy, this is a drama, and i respect that. unlike boy and the beast's stupid death of kumatetsu, out of nowhere and without any actual logic besides the crappy "death is a part of life, so kumatetsu had to die" bs. in this story....yeah, death is meant to happen. and man......if the character i think will die, actually does....DEAR LORD, RIVERS WILL BE CRIED. have the kleenex ready, folks....just saying

I believe so, but I'm going by everyone's comments, and also, the line on this page here: https://www.furaffinity.net/full/32295340/ - "He is very smart, not like the wolves." Though, she could have meant Oren.

Well they aren't objecting to the act of eating meat so much as they are the act of eating sapient beings, specifically other herbivores.
In much the same way I imagine we'd dislike being around cannibals.
It's not the meat eating itself that's the issue, as seen with the Squirrel being entirely chill about the idea of Rask eating fish and even congratulating him on what he sees as a clever strategy in using bugs to bait fish to the surface.

Hm I suppose so, but they way some of them are treating creatures is going to bite them in the backside eventually, for instance when they need the support of those creatures they've mutilated by ripping their teeth out, they likely won't find it. Or They may find Rask has more support, they where will that leave them? Either way it's going to be interesting to find out.

Yes, but treating them as they do is not good either, they need to find a middle ground and realise that as that rabbit said nature is as nature is, however even an old dog can learn new tricks, also they need to stop underestimating the intelligence of wolves and other carnivores, seriously you can stay ahead of your hunters if you don't know their intelligence.

It's a morality tale about the leap from "feral"/primitive patterns to what might evolve into a functioning society of multiple sapient species. I think existential crisis would be par for the course when you start to realize you've been essentially eating people your whole life-- unless you were a psychopath, I guess, or less evolved.
There isn't an analogous comparison on earth (we can't talk to pigs, for instance, and our ancestors probably killed all the nethanderals rather than form cooperative bonds), which is why I thought it was interesting to explore in an anthropomorphic world where the end goal was not a monoculture. At some point, somewhere, animals (especially predators) would need to have self reflection beyond what is excusable as "natural" and make a shift. The concept of morality is born.
It certainly wont be vegan friendly if that's what you're worried about.
