"So I said to her: Come on, girl. It's easy, just like sleeping."
"Did she doze halfway through your little mating dance?"
"Har-dee-har-har, ba-dum-tish, laugh track, mister stand-up."
Chevise (just Chevise) and Alexei Miladovich have been hackpointers for a long time. Long enough to remember being called Wizards, agents responsible for jobs ranging from modifying a person's residual self-image, to containing the damage to a shared dream due to the breakdown of a user's mind. They could do these things because they knew, rather literally, how to speak to your heart and soul.
As the technology of shared dreaming improved, their talents became less useful. It even turned into a source of mistrust from the users they once served. In lieu of a clear choice, they were given a compromise: they could remain in the major Scapes doing what they loved, as long as they did not use the full extent of their skills on normal users.
At the FPRIME node, an independently-operated Scape network, Chevise and Alexei have more freedom to use their skills amongst users who already come in expecting to experiment and live as half-human hybrids.
>> I'm working on a short story, tentatively titled The Prisoner, which is basically a prequel to Requiem To Nephilim involving Chevise and Alexei. With this one I hope to learn to write a bit tighter, and get some practice making something where you can't completely trust anybody in it.
