I feel like it's a tad presumptuous of her to assume they can just "live better lives". Do we know why they doing this to begin with? Is it a choice they made, or a path they felt forced into due to a lack of options?

Yes, you can just say bandit "hey, bandit, stop make this shit and turn into good man!" and he will say "Sure! Already did!". Because the problem is not that they have ALREADY psychologically stepped over the law for themselves and are ready to solve their problems through banditry, but that no one has threatened them that they will be punished if they do bad things :3
First two days yes. But after then this guys forget about this scary monster and their life with their troubles will come to them again. And then such a problem as how to find money or how to find a woman to pass the evening will again send them on the high road, because they do not know how to achieve this in another way.
