"It is told in the Lay of Leithian that Beren came stumbling into Doriath grey and bowed as with many years of woe, so great had been the torment of the road. But wandering in the summer in the woods of Neldoreth he came upon Luthien, daughter of Thingol and Melian, at a time of evening under moonrise, as she danced upon the unfading grass in the glades beside Esgalduin. Then all memory of his pain departed from him, and he fell into an enchantment; for Luthien was the most beautiful of all the Children of Iluvitar. Blue was her raiment as the unclouded heaven, but her eyes were grey as the starlit evening; her mantle was sewn with golden flowers, but her hair was dark as the shadows of twilight. As the light upon the leaves of trees, as the voice of clear waters, as the stars above the mists of the world, such was her glory and her loveliness; and in her face was a shining light.
But she vanished from his sight; and he became dumb, as one that is bound under a spell, and he strayed long in the woods, wild and wary as a beast, seeking for her. In his heart he called her Tinuviel, that signifies Nightingale, daughter of twilight, in the Grey-elven tongue, for he knew no other name for her. And he saw her afar as leaves in the winds of autumn, and in winter as a star upon a hill, but a chain was upon his limbs.
There came a time near dawn on the eve of spring, and Luthien danced upon a green hill; and suddenly she began to sing. Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song from the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Luthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed.
Then the spell of silence fell from Beren, and he called to her, crying Tinuviel; and the woods echoed the name. Then she halted in wonder, and fled no more, and Beren came to her. But as she looked on him, doom fell upon her, and she loved him; yet she slipped from his arms and vanished from his sight even as the day was breaking. Then Beren lay upon the ground in a swoon, as one slain at once by bliss and grief; and he fell into a sleep as it were into an abyss of shadow, and waking he was cold as stone, and his heart barren and forsaken. And wandering in mind he groped as one that is stricken with sudden blindness, and seeks with hands to grasp the vanished light. Thus he began the payment of anguish for the fate that was laid on him; and in his fate Luthien was caught, and being immortal she shared in his mortality, and being free recieved his chain; and her anguish was greater than any other of the Eldalie has known."

I decided to draw Luthien in the role of her namesake, the character Luthien from The Silmarillion. Beren and Luthien's story has always been my favorite out of all of J.R.R. Tolkien's writiings, so I've included a piece of it here for you guys to read. There is quite a bit more to it than what I've included here, but in the end Luthien does forsake her immortal life for Beren and they both die some years later.
I am going to be doing a whole portfolio featuring some of the prominant female characters from Tolkien's stories. This was going to go in it, but I feel I've fallen short of what I wanted to put into it. I wanted more knotwork, and possibly some elven script as well, so I'm putting this down as a trial run; I'll be doing something MUCH more elaborate for the portfolio.
If you have a female character, and you'd like to have her in the portfolio as one of these characters, I'll be posting a journal about it soon - it will be a commission option. :3 There will be a list of characters to choose from.
Artwork info: 9"x12" bristol, colored pencils and marker, I used a TON of glitter pens on this. The whole sky is glittery, as is the trim on her dress and the jewel on her forehead. I'll likely be doing the same for the pieces in the portfolio.

Gathered from both the reading and the picture, the depiction of Luthien is quite astounding. I found the picture itself is intriguing, capturing both the aesthetic beauty of Luthien in conjuction with the source of Beren's melancholy without saying a single word. The garment that Luthien is wearing is very well done and detailed (I'm expecting it took a while to do that) and I particularly like how the brown fur on the nose smoothly fades into the gray fur on her head. The bright colors, especially the brighter blues on the garment, also make Luthien appear to stand out from the background.

It's such a sad story. I've never read The Silmarillion. I keep meaning to, but Tolkien is one of those authors I have to devote a fair amount of energy on because his florid writing style can make him a bit hard to read at times. But now maybe I'll try again. On to the art, I really like your Luthien's interpretation of her namesake. The look of happiness on her face, and her carefree dancing in the moonlight really captures the mood of the story, and I love her interpretation of Tolkien's Luthien's clothes. The gown is really gorgeous, and I really like the little crown on her head. I guess its probably pretty obvious to say that it suits her, since this is the character she was originally based on, but I really think it does. The elven roots of your Luthien really shine through in a piece like this.
It's a shame it didn't work out the way you wanted. I think it's a really lovely piece as it is. But if the portfolio pieces are going to be even more elaborate than this, they will be a treat to see!

This is gorgeous hun, this is so....Tolkieny! I love it. And Velox...yes, it's a sad story..most stories, good ones at least, have sadness in them...but Tolkiens story more than anything is about love. Luthein made a sacrifice for her love, and she made it willingly because she had someone who was worth it. I find it an inspiration. I'd like to add a note to this...the story of Beren and Luthien wasn't just a fictional love. If you ever get a chance to visit Tolkiens grave, you'll see that, above he and his wifes names, is inscribed the names 'Beren' and 'Luthien'. The love of Beren and Luthien was Tolkien and his wifes love, as well..the main reason why, of all the tales he gave us, that was the one closest to his heart.
Tho Tolkien was very much more akin to hobbits than he was to elves. A lot of who Bilbo was was him.

I'm always amazed at how much of his own life Tolkien managed to fit into those books, and as I said over on Facebook I think its really sweet that they have that on their graves, its so fitting for them. ^_^ In a way, I've noticed that Arwen and Aragorn's story echoes that of Luthien and Beren, just a little. Arwen has to choose between her people and Aragorn, but I think she puts it very well when she says, "I would rather live one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone."
I guess maybe I base my own fursona's romance off of this too, she being elven and Theron being of mortal blood. Even the way we met could be somewhat compared to Beren's first sighting of Luthien - Theron tells me quite often that the first time he saw me, I was sitting up on a hill (we were at fighter practice for the S.C.A. and I was dressed up in somewhat elven garb) and he was mesmorized by me, and couldn't get me out of his head after that. He claims he tried to talk to me and I just ignored him lol but I think I just didn't hear him or notice at the time.
I'm being long-winded, I'll stop now. lol

yes, I read the description. :D although I can't promise I'll be able to afford a commission in the near future, it will be this character if I do:
Jowana "Yavanna" Silmaril
Her companion character sheet is here (only if you are curious):
Bagheera "Lorien" Silmaril
Silmaril isn't their last name, just a symbolic title they received for creating their world. xP
Look forward to your commission journal for the portfolio. btw are you considering selling the original for the Luthien piece?

Someone actually already commissioned me for Yavanna, though there are still several others available, not sure how quickly they will be filled. I usually can take about 3 or 4 commissions a week, it all really depends on what I get commissioned for, either one of these for the portfolio or one of my other themes. If you ever wanted to get one of your two characters drawn together as Yavanna and Lorien though I'd be glad to do so. :3
I hadn't considered selling the Luthien piece, I rarely put any of my originals up for sale since there usually isn't any interest in them, but I guess if someone was dying to buy one I might be pursuaded.

WOW I love that ref sheet of hers - I dunno, there's something really sexy about seeing them making love and she's wearing the Evenstar necklace. But maybe that's the LOTR fangirl in me talking. ^_^
All this elvish stuff is sort of making me want to show more of Luthien's elven side. I've drawn her as a bellydancer so many times but I think its time to show her as she truly is, after all I really love drawing elven style clothing and so rarely do it.

I am a sucker for poetic artworks... ;) Not saying your other artworks aren't nice, but this piece in particular just stands out above the rest.
It's unfortunate the Luthien piece isn't for sale, I would be interested (though my money is tight right now so I'll have to wait a bit). I do believe there's a huge market for fantasy art, and you do mostly real-media art so I think you can potentially make a decent income selling originals on auction sites like FurBid.
Also unfortunate about someone already reserving the Yavanna slot. xD That's the only one I am really interested in (any other wouldn't be fitting since my characters already have elven names)
Oh well, I'll look forward to your next batch of artworks regardless! :) I am sure they'll be beautiful.

Besides the IRL connection, both Aragorn and Arwen are distant (very distant) relations and are both descended from Beren & Luthien. Tolkien first met his future wife in a woodland glad filled with hemlock, where she danced for him. 'Beren' means 'Brave', wheras Tolkien comes from the german 'foolishly brave', which may be why he chose the name. Her family was protestant, and didn't want him to marry Tolkein. His guardian forbade Tolkien from marrying her until he turned 21, also for religious reasons. When he turned 21, he asked her to marry him, and even tho she was engaged to anohter...she dropped him like a rock and accepted Tolkiens ring.
Yeah...Tolkien rocks. ^.^
