Loose translation of the German poem:
This is the hunter's badge of glory:
That he protects and tends his quarry,
Hunts with honour, as is due,
And through the beast to God is true.

gorgeous. I love how the deer is the hunter and there is a wolf pelt about his waist. Total switch of rolls!

  muddypaws

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Yeah I noticed the loin-cloth of wolf pelt too.

Makes me thankful that I never got into hunting; I'd hate to see how this buck would deal with a human.

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

In some states, it's almost legal >.>

  crashfu

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

... what states is it not legal to accidentally hit Deer in? I'd think the car damage and possible injuries would be considered enough.

  lupin-wolfe

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

No, I mean to intentionally hit one as a form of "hunting"

  crashfu

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Well how can you prove whether or not it was accidental or intentional? xP

I mean, they might suspect it if you've installed a ramp on the front of your pickup and a forward-opening net on the bed of the truck. :3 *cackle*

I love the lighting in this piece, very realistic and true to the woods I think.

I love that the deer has a (wolf?) pelt around his waist.

And his gaze is so focused. I can almost feel the muscles tense as he tries to slowly draw the arrow from the quiver as to not alert his prey.

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I think I just had like.. a joy-aneurysm. And it was good.

Seriously, though, this is some beautiful work. I can't even express it. D: The lighting, the pose, and the cleverness of that wolf pelt. And I just love how you do fur. Usually when people define it I always think it's too jumbled or busy, but it's so good here.

  foxystallion

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Spectacularly beautiful, and I really like the sentiment of both the image and the poem. As a rancher who loses about one cow per year to mountain lions, I'm particularly fond of the stag's loin cloth... He is definitely welcome at my ranches and private hot springs!

  neongrizzly

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I love it man. Thank you for killing a wolf. =3

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Why exactly do you hate wolves so much? I've noticed you and many others have been saying alot of stuff like this on this site lately. It's depressing...I'm beginning to have mixed feelings about people here in general now. I just don't understand this sudden hate boner for wolves in the community...

  hawkwolf

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

wolves are a little overdone. everyone loves them. "OMFG TEH WOLFIES" etc.

People idolize them in stupid ways (have you ever met a 'were'? I gain the ability to bash them because I used to be one :P), do things like "I WANT A WOLFY" irl and end up with a wolf hybrid they cannot handle (wolf != fluffy housepet), etc etc.

On the other hand, I'm a fucking wolf. Don't kill wolves.

;)

  neongrizzly

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Hahaha! I don't hate wolves! Wolves are my best friends! XD

I sat that coz, yes, they are a lil overdone, and the fact I like to tease my wolfie friends about them all the time. XP

Wolves are <3333. Wolf was an option of mine when I was looking for my fursona, but I dunno, saw so many here took that option off my list. xD

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I apologize, I'm just really sensitive when it comes to the subject and it just looked like you were yet another hater (I've been running into so many of them lately, it's just driving me batty).
It's just starting to bother me because it seems like nobody really likes wolves anymore in furry because they've been such a common character type and this particular pic just hit me because the first thing that came to mind was "Wow...even Blotch is doing it now..."

  kenket

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I'm sorry...but at least you understand where I'm coming from, right? <:3

  blotch

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

People have been beating on wolves since we first invented weapons, why stop now? It's not really a new movement. ;D

But seriously: I love wolves myself, I just love other animals also and I figured if deer had the ability to bow-hunt then the best way for a stag to protect his quarry (his harem) olde European style would be to get rid of the danger before it had a chance to strike. ;]

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I know...I just wish people would pick on other preds for a change when doing the whole role reversal thing...

Artistically, it is very beautiful...it just makes me feel kinda...ya know. <:3

What amuses me most is the way so few people seem to have made the actual connection to the liquor.

A very beautiful piece. I can see and feel a lot of story here. The lightning, the background, the character and of course, all the small touches you always put into a piece--simple perfection.

A toast to you! (With the appropriate German beverage!)

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

That's peculiar, but I'll have to agree then :) Of course the producer of Jäger knows best ;) Normally a hunter was historically called a "Waidmann" though, that's why I thought it was wrong. Sorry about that!

Neat! I drew a picture very similar to this back in high school! I never finished it, but it was a deer with a bow tracking through the woods. It's a great concept.

Very lovely!

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

It's always a wolf who suffers...

Why has everyone been hating on wolves so much lately? Is it like the new furry fad or what?

  satosuke

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I'll give you a hint. It's just a drawing. Shocking, no?

And I think this one might be an ironic statement, turning the predator into prey and vice versa.

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

It is just a drawing, but...it still reflects a person's feelings too. It just made me feel a little sad that even an entity as cool as Blotch...ya know...

  dragonsintheattic

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I kinda got the personal feeling that it's a wolf pelt because wolves are the most common predator a red deer would have to worry about...

Blotch isn't "beating on" wolves, it's just geographically and ecologically accurate.

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Ya know though, there are other predators that a deer has to worry about. And they all outnumber wolves a million to one.

It just bugs me that every time I see a prey/pred role reversal pic, it's ALWAYS a wolf that's the pred.

  dragonsintheattic

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

  True.

Makes me want to see someone do an image of the Leader of the Wild Hunt... with a human-skin loincloth. Maybe I'll do that one myself :)

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

It'd be original, that's for sure. And cool. ;3

  lupin-wolfe

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Ya do have to notice that we ARE overdone. Along with foxes, we've become the generic choice when someone can't think of a species... On that, we usually get chosen by the doms/tops, while the foxes get chosen by the subs/bottoms. And of course, deer are always set as prey (for fairly obvious reasons)... THis stuff just helps set a balence ^^

  wolfie

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Yeah, but now the balance seems to be shifting too much to the other end. It seems that everyone lately has gotten the idea that since wolves are fairly common in furry, they're just unwelcome fodder now. It just makes me sad is all...

Furry fandom media was the only place I found that wolves were actually respected in a way and such, and now it just seems that even in furry, that's not even the case.

  silvermane

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Wonderful details again Botch! I love the fact you included the shadows of the leaves on him for instance. The wolf lupine pelt raises some questions of whose hunting who...Oh my a wolf's worst nightmare a deer on the hunt! :)

  gildedtongue

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Something tells me that it's possible the last person who wore that skin around the deer's waist, also wore the cross pendant that's around the deer's neck... ;)

  zhivagod

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Off topic, but what on earth would give you that idea?

  gildedtongue

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

Looking at the rest of the deer, doesn't look like the kind of person who would wear much in the way of jewelry or be seen in towns often.

  zhivagod

( No Subject ) Posted: 4 years ago

I don't really read it that way that at all. As a matter of fact, just the way I read it, that if jewelry would be be a hassle, or even dangerous to wear (Worry about it getting caught on a branch while hunting, maybe?) then the only reason he'd wear it would be because he just plain wants to. Why he wants to? Well, that's up for debate.

Just my thoughts. ^^

Do you like German culture? That why you choose this?

I have heard this poem before, I read it in class once. I don't normally favourites things, but this will be one of them, because it seems no one knows german culture anymore. Its quite saddening. This poem is by Otto Von Riesenthal, if I'm not mistaken. The translationis good to, even if you were trying to keep it rhyming. I'm impressed. :)

Great pic of a young stag wise beyond his years and confident. I've always had a thing for the sleekness and aesthetic nobility of cervines. As others have mentioned, the wolf pelt/trophy is a great role-reversal touch, and it adds volumes to his steady gaze and graceful yet agressive-looking form. Also, I'm writing a stag story and this pic is great inspiration for it. I'd love it if you did more deer like this. Faved!

I am definitely in love with this picture. You see, I have a bit of a thing for deer, and especially for stags. I also have a thing for German. It reminds me of Grandpa. That aside, it's a beautiful piece of work with many technical merits.

WOW! (FAV+) I'm sure you've heard a bit of this but ... I started a story about a wolf and a deer and posted it on here. I doubt you have the time to read it, but it's only seven pages, and I love your work. I would be honored if you would read it and give me some feed back.

Back quivers were never used in medieval times, generally arrows were stuck into the belt, or carried in a cloth bag with a round bit of leather punched through with holes to stick the arrows through.

The arrows themselves would have the fletchings further forward since there needs to be a bit of wood free to have the nock put into it or to press against the string.

Archers would also wear a bracer, a bit of leather over their wrist, since the bow string would painfully slap against it otherwise.

Bits of cloth were not wrapped around the grip of bows until the 16th or 17th centuries AFAIK.

"Medieval miltary costume in colour photographs" is a brilliant resource. "English Longbowman 1330 to 1515" is also invaluble and has some nice pictures from Flemish tapestries. :)

I assume the gold is gold paint, They do sell transfer gold n' stuff at the shop here, but nothing suitable for burnishing it. The black and gold does create a very fine effect, this is probably better than many 15th & 16th panel paintings surviving since many of them are very boring with just some bishop or prince standing around looking all stern and dark.

Although I suppose the description doesn't specifically say medieval times. I guess it's the blackletter, that was used from about 12th to 16th centuries.

I feel that I should point out that blackletter was used in Germany until 1941, and the precise text on the picture is used on Jägermeister bottles to this day. :)

Wonderful picture, incidentally.

I seem to recall that Bismarck(?) had a thing about books not using it being ungerman, and that he would refuse them if they were gifts and did not use it. Or Fraktur rather.

Normally I'm not into anthros that aren't pointy-snooted wild canines or raccoon-family beasties, but this is just AWESOME.

Legend says cross goes between the horns...

But then again if he's the hunter... then would he be looking for a wolf with a cross between its ears?

I love the loincloth. Especially with the footpaws sticking out. I've never seen a loincloth complete with footpaws. In fact, I'm pretty sure all loincloths I've seen were made out of cloth. Extra points for being different, at least to me.

haha okay this is funny but when I saw the name and the thumbnail I expected to see my friend Nevermint's character "Jager". He is a wolf/deer hybrid. XD but Instead it's a deer with a wolf pelt that is named the same thing! so I wonder does the poem say anything about wolves and deer? because that would be too random to be a coincidence!

anyways, beautiful art, as always. :)

There's no chance of prints of this one, is there?

I'd love to have that one hanging somewhere in my house. Not quite sure where - maybe Reptile Room 2 - but somewhere!

i think this is definately one of my favourite pictures of yours. truly beautiful work, you handle traditional media very proffessionaly. and this makes me curious to ask: do you take commissions? if so, wjat are the rates? and if not, are there possibilities that you would in future?

Hmm as always some nice stuff. I like the use of German text it really adds to the feeling of this being a label. the dappled shadows and the forest are really a delight and its a nice bit of scenery for the character. That hart though was expertly drawn I think the fingers are fantastic and perfectly articulated. his horns and that face are nice too but he looks a bit more predatory then I would have expected for his species. which I suppose fit nicely with the fact he is hunting a canine and wearing a wolf belt loin cloth o.O nice use of irony there anyway nice work and I like the use of colors and shadows its a really well done little label. But then I am a sucker for archery and you drew that well.

Very interesting and full of little funny details, like the national colours of Germany (black-red-gold) on the strap and the cross around his neck representing the cross between the horns.

By the way did you know that the deer with the cross between his horns is out of the legend of St. Hubert, patron of Hunters. By seeing such a deer durning a hunt St. Hubertus became a christian and a saint (and quited all his hunting ambitions).

I don't drink, so the beer comments were lost on me until I saw a tee-shirt with the Jagermeister logo on it. I didn't fave this piece to get off on it in some weird way, since it's clearly not meant to be pornographic. I don't really care whether he's wearing a wolf pelt or not (The paws imply that it was a feral wolf, not an anthro one). I'm not going to get lost in the errata of historical accuracy for a simple piece of fine art. I just like the picture for it's own sake.

So, that rant aside, this image has some lovely lighting and color. Though I am a wolf, I do enjoy a well-done stag such as this. The fact that he's a hunter makes it all the more interesting. It almost reminds me of a Robin Hood type figure, as if he were some outlaw living in the wilds by his wits, avoiding a corrupt government because he's holding true to the ideals of his faith.
