I like the fan idea that Trixie was adopted and raised by earth ponies. They didn't raise her in the usual unicorn ways, so her magic is entirely self-taught. That's what makes her special and earned her her magic-related cutie mark... but it also gave her a big ego in regards to what she can do, which is why she puts on a traveling magic show in a world where a third of the population uses magic to make *breakfast*.
She did, but only barely. She had no dialog, and she appeared in three or four scenes where her screen time added up to only a few seconds.
Amusingly, if you watch carefully (and freeze-frame at one point), she looks like she could be thinking, "Where have I seen Trixie before? She seems familiar somehow..."

I think I found the image that set me off, specifically: http://img.ponibooru.org/_images/5d.....pinkie_pie.jpg
Not exactly the same, certainly, but it was rattling around in the back of my mind.

I wasn't sure if I could make Hoity Toity look younger, but I heard he was based on Karl Lagerfeld, so I looked up pictures of him on Google Images. Lagerfeld's definitely a guy who doesn't seem like he was ever any younger, but a related search link at the top of the page said "young Karl Lagerfeld", so I clicked it. Sure enough, he used to be a younger man! Freshly charged with confidence, I drew young Hoity Toity as seen here.
He doesn't look anything like young Karl Lagerfeld; I mainly just needed the confidence to try. :}

I was reminded of an old anecdote about the famous violinist Jascha Heifetz:
Jascha was once hired to play at some High Society affair, and explained to the hostess that his fee would be $200 for the evening.
The hostess agreed; but then informed him, "I must instruct you, Mr. heifetz, that you are strictly hired entertainment: I must ask you not to mingle with the guests."
To which he replied, "In that case, Madame, I will only charge $100." 7@=Q

That is a pretty fun theory. Kind of explains a lot about her too. Like why her magic isn't that impressive when you get down to it, and also why she feels the need to show off. Also why she's pulling her own cart. I don't mean to be insulting, but most of the unicorns we've seen seem to be a bit fragile for much physical labor.
