* chunk * my ferrets never really bit me like that my most recent ferret sometimes would bite my folks like that but she rarely bit me she'd nip my ankles but thats about it. there is teh same myth about meerkats being bitey its not true for them all they all have different temperaments just like people :0
Ferrets and all mustelids I know of nip gently to show affection.
Well...To them, its a "gentle" nip.
They have to learn that humans have delicate skin by comparison.
I've met a tame badger, and she does "nip hugs" too- But hers are deliberate; slowly increasing pressure for a few seconds before letting go.
It was really clear she could have hurt me...And was trying not to while letting me know she liked me.
(Becky badger, at the desert museum in Palm Springs, for the curious.)
They have signs up saying do not pester or bother the badger... But she'll come right up to the base of the wall that you can reach over with some effort for pets and scritches.
And then after a few pets, she'll start doing the happy badger dance- Frisking backwards while throwing her head left and right. Roll around on the ground a few times, scratch an itchy spot...And then come right back for more petting.
The signs do not say "do not touch the badger", and the docents seem to know it happens and are tolerant as long as you are gentle with her.
I'm told she mopes and seems depressed if she can't get pets from people or see them.
I should go back and see her again.
