Since someone asked for some of the progress shots for the Vermin at Large painting, here they be!
I was a dork and I forgot to take some photos of the lettering/painting the asphalt bits.
When I was done with the rats on the cover, I had to paint the actual conbadge before I could finish everything. :]

I wish I had had rats to lift. It was a nightmare getting the shadow right.
I did draw everything myself--These are just progress shots of the rat. The text is all hand lettered, the newpaper is painted, as is the asphalt, etc etc--I just didn't think to take photos of that part.
The first picture is me taking masking fluid off the rat, then the rest is detailing up the rat and finishing the conbadge.

So freakin' rad. Thanks very much for sharing! I have a much deeper appreciation for your work now that I've seen the process you go through on this one piece.
(Not like I -didn't- appreciate it before, it's just HOLY CRAP that's a lot of planning and work. And it looks -amazing-.) :)

I use Winsor & Newton artist masking fluid--the cheaper frisket stuff has a tendency to destroy everything in a 5 mile radius. For any type of frisket, never water it down (which I've seen people do) and you have to apply it pretty liberally.
If it isn't coming off properly, you may want to consider thicker paper. I've tried it before on some thiner/cheap watercolour paper and it tends to tear the page. Also, you have to wait until the paper and the frisket is completely dry (which can take a while) before trying to remove it. :]

Again... I seriously need to try watercolors again...
Heh.. in the first panel it looks like you're pasting a cut-out silluette of the rat on the painting of the newspaper... are you?
But yeah, truly impressive.. the fur looks so easy to do, yet I know I won't be able to do anything close to this when I try it..
Thanks for sharing! :D *makes magic arms come out of your screen that hugs you*

Actually, the first panel is me removing masking fluid from the rat. :]
I put the masking fluid on to keep the rats and the conbadge clean while I painted the newspaper and layered up the asphalt.
The best way to improve is practice--it's intimidating to start, but it really does get fun after a while. :]

intimidating?? Oh yes! xD
*meeps in fear as he picks up the pencil...* don't want to faiiil...
But yes, practice can take you a long way if you don't let your failures to get the upper hand =)
Masking fluid.. that's pretty practical! ...I have alot to learn xD
Again, thanks alot ^^

with the rat so you start out with a simple sketch for the rats then start from the bottom up adding a bit of color. then i see you add more detail and the shadow for this one. interesting, kinda like how i do my style i start out with the head down then add the detail but i'm not much of a color artist unfortunately. but i'm starting to learn how to add depth and detail with markers and colored pencils.
