Important things to be aware of:
-NEVER use heat on your fursuit! It can melt and damage the fur!!
-Never hang your suit if it is sopping wet. A wet bodysuit can weigh over 50 lbs. and hanging it will cause the fur to stretch from the weight of the water! If your suit is just mildly damp it is perfectly fine to hang. Otherwise just drape it over some milk cartons or chairs until it is dry enough to hang. Using the spin cycle of a washing machine is very useful for getting out extra water.
-Be careful when using the washing machine; make sure you know how yours works. Never use hot water. Be wary of front-loading machines as some have a "steam" cycle which could potentially damage your suit!

You can also buy an airbrush gun for fairly cheap at a craft store like at Michaels, especially if you use one of their 40% off coupons. Canned air is about $10 and paint is about $4; if your suit has airbrushed spots for example, they are very easy to touch up on your own. Be sure to ask your commissioner first incase this voids any warranties you may have. Faded airbrushing is better than having a stinky suit.
Well of course~ It's just I've never tried air brushing before (never really got the chance to make my own suit) so I have no idea how good I would be at it :\\ I mean I've seen some people just kind of clean up only the more erm.. smelly/sweaty parts of the suit and just leave leave the rest and I'm not really sure how well that works :'D Seems like you'd have to do it more often though
You can, but please be careful! Make sure you know what the shoes inside are like.
I accidentally ruined my old MFY paws because the shoes inside had blue dye in them and it bled through and stained the paws with blue spots...
I now request all my fursuit feet to be built on white crocs so I know it won't happen again :)

This is awesome! On the subject of cleaning fursuits, I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish more people would clean their suits x.x
for such expensive costumes I'd think people would take better care of them, I keep coming across pictures of fursuits that have looked so soft and lovely when new, but over time, becoming more and more brown/dirty/greasy and it's a sad sight.
Hopefully this tutorial will help some people out! It's seriously awesome!!!!!

Okay, a bit confused here. I've heard that you should only ever put a fursuit into a front loading washer because the agitator can get caught on something a stretch/rip your fursuit. Since you seem to be using a top loader I'm going to assume it's okay, but I want to make sure that I didn't hear incorrectly before - can you use front loaders too?
BEWARE of front loaders. Some of these try to save water by being efficient with use of water, and actually have a "steam" sanitation cycle. This high temp cycle will melt the fur. make sure you know your front loader very well, and be sure you don't melt the fur.
I've always just washed my suits in a top loader, but I will stand by and watch it thru each phase, to be sure it's not rubbing the tub edges, or getting off center when it hits the spin cycles.

I just wash them the same way I wash anything else! Scrub em' in the tub, and put them in the machine in a pillow case to get most of the water out! Just make sure you fully dry them before storing, especially the foam in them.
However, you NEED to know what shoes they are made on. I accidentally ruined my feetpaws by MFY because they were built on skate shoes with blue dye on them, and when I finished washing them they had blue spots on them from the dye.

As for cleaning dirt off of it, a wet wash cloth is really the only good way, fursuit heads are hard to clean!

after about a year of wear for me, I surface wiping does no more.. you have to take serious action. my heads are all foam rubber, and you really can't hurt that with quick wet downs. So, I take my heads, and with a hand held shower, and gentle detergent, I spray out the inside of the head with warm water, and dunk it into a tub with water, dunking, rinsing, soaping, repeat a couple times. You will be amazed at the ick that will be inside the head. using the shower nozzle, I rinse things out really good..
Then get a squirrel cage blower, and set the head on that for a couple days. it will be dry, and clean, with no issues.
Also, Woolite is a waste of money in the case of synthetic furs. It was designed to protect "natural" fibers that normally required special care ie wool. You pay extra for that, and thus woolite really goes to waste on synthetics fibers. You can use it, no harm done, but you can use regular liquid detergent just the same. Just the same.
Also, people are scared about bleach products, or oxy products. I don't recommend using them on fur, but as a matter of fact, synthetic furs are nearly impossible to Dye or Bleach. the color is the color of the plastic that is spun off to make the fur. Anyone that has tried to dye fur has found that after time the dye washes out, and fur returns to it's natural color. I have also "bleached" some of my suits in the past over some desperate measures, and had no ill effect either.
Also another point.. People always notice that over time, white furs tend to turn yellow. This is not necessarily due to poor cleaning. Just like your plastic headlamps on your car, UV light from sunlight or fluorescent lighting will turn white furs yellow. So the more you do outside events, or if you display your suit under fluorescent lighting, you will turn your white furs yellowish over time, and there is no reversing that. don't think florescent lighting is such a big deal? Why do you think art museums refuse to use it? Set a newspaper under a fluorescent desk lamp for a couple months and watch what happens to it.

I just use woolite cus it's what we have at our house! I do make sure to tell people that other detergents are fine too.
I just like to play it as safe as possible with these things; a lot of people spend a lot of money on their costumes, and they're scared of ruining them.
Do you know of bleach harming airbrushing? Or anything about cleaning air brushed suits in general?
Thank you for all of your helpful information :D
Feel free to share any of your knowledge!

Doing this right now as I type (suit in washer at the moment) so he smells nice and fresh at MFF. He has airbrushing on his arms and legs but I would far rather have to redo airbrushing than stink!
Something that may want to be warned about. The weight. My oy has HUGE friggin stompy feet so the body is little heavier (all padding removed) and it went from a 10 lb body to about a 40-60 lb body with water squeezed out.

I scrub everything by hand and just use the machine to rinse, yep! No detergent is added to the machine, though if your suit is only a little bit sweaty and not matted, stained, dirty, etc. you can skip the scrubbing and just use the machine to clean it.
Not sure what you mean by woolite-machine!

Depends on what the tail is stuffed with!
With
's tail, the stuffing is removable and there's not much of it. So washing goes about as normal!
My friend
's tail is a huge curly tail stuffed very full with polyfil. We used to just carefully hand wash the suit while holding the tail out of the water, but since I discovered how dry the machine gets the suit, it doesn't matter any more! We just make sure to turn the suit inside out to protect the tail and we're good! The tail is almost dry when we take it out, and so we just hang it up for a few hours in front of a fan and have had no problems :)
For a tail that has a foam core, that could be a bit more tricky! I would say just try it, but put lots of fans around it to be sure it is FULLY dry before storing, wet or damp foam can grow bacteria!
Hope this helps :)

If the head itself ever gets dirty (should not, but if it does) the only thing to do is wipe it down with a damp washcloth and a tiny bit of soap or mild Folex carpet cleaner.
But really you should just avoid getting the head dirty as it is very delicate and hard to clean.

If they're built on slippers, you should probably be fine with scrubbing em and soaking em!
Unless the slipper is a very bright color and there is a potential that the slippers have some sort of dye in them, I definitely recommend washing them really good!
My friend has a pair of white indoor feet paws and here are the results when i washed them: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/9366226/

that's great!! thank you :) and the slippers just seem to be white/gray which i imagine isn't a problem.. but i will be super cautious just in case. thank you soo much for this tutorial! I just got my first ever partial in the end of December so I am still very new at this all, but want to make sure to take the best care of my suit.
I know I'm tardy to the party but this tutorial is magnificent! I just recently used it and my suit is so clean. The body suit was fine through the washer and I really am not the best sewer. Thank you so much for posting this!
Also, for anyone with foam parts, as I saw some people were wondering about that, I had mine leaning up against a wall, to let all the water drain out, or at least to a specific area. The drying still took a day or two, but maybe that will help someone :)
Thanks again! I'm going to have the nicest smelling suit at FWA ;3

Not to sound creepy, but where do you live? I think I cleaned your house once, lol. On a not so creepy note, I kinda wish fursuit washing was a little more widespread thing. I know some people who spent a good deal of their allowance on a suit will be hesitant to attempt washing theirs, but builders usually include instructions for cleaning or a brush to aid in this function
I'M NOT THAT OLD!! >XD But I figured your home was built about that time ago, however in the past few years I cleaned a few custome homes with that style of tile, it was a bit higher end material. Anyway, its not important, it just looked like one of the homes I had worked on once upon a time ago
My bodysuit has nonremovable padding. They are stuffed pillows will cluster stuffing. Is this method safe to use on it? My paws are also stuffed fleece with foam padded fingers.
I would also like to clean my tail since its so long that it drags. It's stuffed fairly with a mixer of pollifill, cluster stuffing, and odd pillow stuffing. How do i clean it?

I think I'm going to take a chance and try it still.
I'll like to start with just washing my paws in the sink to see what happens, but I only found your tutorial on LiveJournal for doing this.
It was to small to read, and zooming it made it blurry.
My white paws are turning brown, so I'm willing to chance washing them. xP
I'll just hope for the best.

Its just a partial, and here's what the suit looks like so you can get an idea of what I mean http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10535787/ (its the white coywolf with red markings) - Sorry to ask, she's not like dirty I would like to wash her sometime though, just worry on how to do that.
You be the judge! Worn it to a few events and disinfected it each time, no smell? You can probably keep wearing it :)
Wore it to one event and got dirt on it? Time to wash!
Basically, wash once it either starts to smell, has visible dirt, or becomes oily from sweat/skin.

For my costume, she has resin hooves for hands. The feet hooves are squishy foam I believe. I am wondering how I will be able to wash that? She also is white with blue airbrushing. I am reading above that after time white costumes turn yellow due to exposure to the light. is that true? I dont want to be labeled as gross because my suit turns yellow from the sun!!!
All of my suits are predominantly white and so far I have not had a problem. I always store them in my closet, away from any light.
You should be able to wash the feet and hands normally! Just take extra care with the resin hooves to be sure they don't come unattached. When you put it in the machine, make sure to put it into a tied-shut pillow case to make sure if a piece DID come off, that it wouldn't be lost in the machine. :)

Cleaning the outside of the head? Check out my website, there is a link to "spot cleaning" on the washing page if I recall! I would link you but I am on mobile sorry ^^; www.CleanFursuits.weebly.com
