Ooh, neat. This actually reminds me of the phoenixes in my story, which differ signficantly from the ones in mythology.
In my setting, the reason they blow up when they die, and also why they are immortal and emit such high levels of body heat is because their heart is just a small star. They literally have a living fusion reactor in their chest.
