*belated rely* Jackals and coyotes are in the same genus, 'Canis', according to modern taxonomy. It was suggested in the early 19th Century that they be in separate genuses because jackals had a dental feature that other canids didn't, but the genus name was changed from 'Thos' to 'Canis'.
