WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Dead Space Extraction
Genre: Gun survivor
I’ve heard very good things about this game…I admit that I never played Dead Space myself, just watched a friend of mine playing it. Though, after playing this game I want to get my hands on the original one as well ^^ so let’s explain a bit more about this game.
The events of the game take place before the original Dead Space, right before the infection spreaded trough the colony. It starts off with a man talking trough a screen with his girlfriend Lexine, talking about a relic that has just been found. He’s ordered to go and examine it along with his comrades…This is where the game starts off.
The mix between the in-game happenings and the actual playing is VERY nice. It isn’t the good old gun survivor when you just go trough the levels and shoot at everything that moves, it haves actual dialogues between the characters and plot developing that makes you feel like you are watching a horror/action movie in wich you can be the one shooting at the monsters. A really good feeling I must say!
The graphic look, while not being anything special (I think resident evil: darkside chronicles will look better than this graphic-wise) is smooth and the characters move naturally, both humans and necromorphs (hope I spelled this right, remember I have to rely on the Italian versions of the games I review X3). The backgrounds will never stray away from the “space colony theme” but they get to be various enough, never giving you the feeling of having already seen a similar room before.
The use of the lights is quite well-done too, giving a nice dark atmosphere to the game, without being too dark for you to see (well, if it is, just shake the wiimote and you’ll have a greenish lightning tool to let you see X3). Though I hope developers will try and actually push the power of the consoles soon, since the wii can do much, much better.
The gameplay doesn’t move away from the usual gun survivor, but adds quite a few nice things to it. First of all by pressing A you’ll be able to use telekinesis to move objects and fling them at the enemies (the good old gas capsules always work ;3) or grab ammo and health items trough the stages, but this is just the last example. Every weapon you’ll get will have a main shooting mode and a secondary one. You can activate the secondary shooting mode simply by tilting the wiimote on a side. Every weapon in the game will have a secondary use…it can go from shooting more than one projectile at once to launch a grenade of light. This also adds a bit of strategy to the game…you can carry just 4 weapons with you, but given the secondary modes you’ll also have 4 different variations with you. In certain points you’ll also be able to look around by yourself…it can be just for a limited time though and most of the time it’ll be for letting you take the items in the current room…so be quick! >:3
The controls are implemented quite well…never had problems, the aiming works well and while beside this there aren’t many more movement-based controls I don’t think this game would have needed them.
Now about the story: this is a strong point of the game…I won’t spoil anything, but you’ll have a big plot twist right at the beginning of the game, won’t tell you what it is X3 but it’ll probably make you go WTF XP anyway, the story developes quite well, adding more characters or killing some, depending by the situation…like I said earlier it’s just like watching a nice horror movie and dead Space fans will probably love how the plot of this game unveils details about the main storyline. So yeah, they made a good job on the story and the plot twists are well-placed :3
The soundtrack is fast-paced or slow depending by the situations, like most gun survivors and they made a very good job, making it carry you trough the game and the situations of danger ina perfect way, it’ll never annoy you :3 you probably won’t remember any of the tunes, since it’s the usual horror-themed soundtrack, but it works well with the game ^^
The game is quite nice. The 2-player co-op mode also add fun to the game and I suggest it to all of you. The ones who’ll probably appreciate this game the most are Dead space and Gun survivor fans. I tried the game on normal mode with my brother and it wasn’t too hard to go trough, except for a couple of situations in wich I really got stuck X3 so if you want a nice challenge I’d suggest to you and to your playing buddy, if you have one, to start out the game on hard mode. Oh right, the game length X3 I’d say…not long as game, but not short as Gun survivor ^^
To close the review I’d like to add the fact that by completing the game you’ll unlock a few challenges to complete and also the entire comic series of Dead Space to enjoy ^^ so yeah, I recommend it to all the dead space and gun survivor fans and also to the people who want to get into this game series…now if you don’t mind I’ll go to buy the original one! X3 *runs*
…. *comes back* oh yeah, the wiikly report ends here :3 see ya next week with a double review! Spyborgs and Wii Sports Resort! (at last X3)

X3 *runs*
