WII GAME OF THE WEEK: One Piece Unlimited cruise 2: The awakening of a hero
Genre: Adventure game
As some of you know I already reviewed the previous game of this series, rating it as one of the best anime-based games I have ever played, with a nice gameplay with lots of genres playing together and a long story mode (around 20 hours at least if you won’t discover all the secrets).
This sequel picks things off right after the first game, where the first arc of the story ended to introduce a new one…the game uses an original storyline, not taken from the anime episodes, but placed somewhere in the storyline of the straw hat crew.
I’ll now repeat how the game works, so that who reads about the game series for the first time can understand how it works ^^
Like I mentioned earlier the first game mixed different genres: adventure, fighting, RPG, beat’em up and action. This second game takes the same rules for the second part of the story. You can play as all of the straw hat pirates, each of them have their movesets, can learn new ones and the level up system is based on the moves themselves rather than the characters. If you want to increase the characters’HP and MP you’ll have to use the cooking ability of Sanji, with each dish increasing the MP and HP in different amounts.
The game puts you again on a set of 4 islands, each with its theme. On each Island you’ll have to explore the surroundings and find little blocks of stone that can unlock the way to the boss battles (even if there is one hidden boss for each island wich haves an alternative way to be reached). To activate the blocks you’ll have Gabri, a weird creature, capable to convert every item you’ll find on the islands from either enemies or other surrounding stuff like bushes and trees, in orb points, wich are needed to unveal the power of each block of stone.
You’ll also have the Sunny, the chip of the crew, that will be not only useful to restore HP and MP and save but also to use different abilities of the characters, sanji’s cooking, chopper’s composing and usopp’s building ability. Each of them can be very useful. Sanji’s cooking is to increae the HP and MP of your characters, Chopper can create healing items and weapon enhancing items (like to freeze or burn enemies) while Usopp can build different items, either to unlock new moves or to use in different ways (like to catch bugs, fish or break rocks).
What does this sequel do compared to its previous counterpart ? Well, it obviously continues the storyline of this original chapter of the series…The gameplay and the graphic look pretty much are on the same level…never change the working formula right ? this doesn’t mean though that this sequel doesn’t do anything more.
First of all, this game is set to be played after the first one…if you have the save files of the first game on your console it will transfer all the characters unlocked in the multiplayer mode, all the moves, the levels and the strength of your characters and it will automatically set the new game on hard mode (so that who played the first game can find a very nice challenge with the second game as well). This is also why I strongly recommend playing the first game, beside the obvious fact that you’d understand the story way better.
Another very nice improvement is how the surroundings look way more open. The previous game had large areas, but they were still quite limited in space, while this game gives you entire fields to explore…I actually stopped more than once to admire the surroundings of the current island…if this wasn’t enough the developers also improved the structure of the islands, making them look lively, giving you visuals you won’t forget soon, especially if you are a fan of the anime.
The soundtrack introduces new and old tunes, staying on the same style of the previous game (also giving you one of the best final boss battle themes in my opinion X3) the length of the game is about the same of the old one, around 20 hours…so to complete the entire storyline with both games it’ll take you 40 hours of gaming…this IF you don’t focus on finding all the secret items/bosses/areas too! This pretty much improves many aspects of the old game, giving to the gamers of the previous one not only an actual challenge that will ask for high gaming skills (especially for the last boss battles), but also a wider world to explore (to master an island completely you must know pretty much every corner, wich gives exploration an important role in this game, even more than in the old one) more enemies, more items and even more moves to unlock, along with the chance of customizing your moveset slightly, depending by your way to play.
I recommend this game to all of the One Piece fans, also recommending to play the first game before getting your hands on this one…In the end the sequel doesn’t change the formula but improves it enough to let you keep playing until the very end! Fully pleased with it, myself X3
