iPhone Killer: maybe never?
I felt like writing this crap out.
I own an iPhone. Call me bias when it comes to this kind of a choice if you like, but looking at the specs and the possible outcomes, I don’t see something like an iPhone killer ever coming out. Been looking around the Internet (haha word capitalizes internet), Mac rumor sites and other tech sties seeing what I can dig up on the apple tablet and anything on a new iPhone. Came across more talk of Google’s Nexus One on macrumors and decided to take a little look at some other smart phone specs. The article on macrumors made a small note that they see the Nexus One as a better phone than the droid. Specifically it states.
“If Google's planning on releasing this phone as their official Google phone, it'll certify them as the premium Android phone brand out there right now. Even though it doesn't have a hardware keyboard, it basically beats the hell out of the Droid in every single task that we threw at it.”
This led me to take looks at the specs on both the Droid and the Nexus One (the specs that are at least out there as of now) Now here may be where my bias comes in, seeing as how I didn’t compare the Droid to the Nexus much, because the Nexus isn’t 100% confirmed to my knowledge and I don’t frankly care if its better than the droid or not for a reason to come. So ‘applefag iPhone bias’ me started thinking when one article with the reported leaked specs of the Nexus started calling it the “iPhone Beater”. I find this to be a very interesting thing to be saying so far. A lot of it seems to be behind things like Android 2.1, Removable battery, better camera, bigger screen, expandable memory, and some other things like better hardware (wi-fi and some other capabilities). This sounds about right to me, if that’s how you judge it, yea its better. But one thing struck me as really interesting in their little article:
“Though, according to rumours, Nexus One will not support multitouch functions, but what the heck - its display is bigger (which means it is more enjoyable to watch movies and browse on Nexus One than on iPhone) and it sure can support higher resolution images without distortion or pixilation.”
So you are saying that multitouch doesn’t matter? That’s a total crock of shit. Sure its not necessary for a phone or computer to have, but after using both a Macbook Pro and an iPhone, I can tell you it sure does make things easy and is a feature I wish more devices would support. How many people have switched to GayT&T, AT&T sorry, for the iPhone alone? Guilty! Well there were some issues with the phone bill but I left good Verizon coverage for 50% being the iPhone and better smart phone selections. So the phone matters and obviously the iPhone is doing something right. But this nonsense of multitouch not really mattering; I don’t think so, it will make a difference. That got me thinking again on some other bits of iPhone rumors and past upgrades in comparison to this “iPhone Beater”. The first thing that popped into my head was the upgrades the new iPhone, if one does come out again this June-July after WWDC. Already from Maximum PC I read an article talking about the rumors of the next iPhone having a 5MP camera (oddly on par with the Droid and Nexus One) The article states that the company had reported the specs for the 3GS at this same time last year:
“DigiTimes was also responsible for breaking the news of the 3GS camera this time last year.”
Well that’s pretty promising given that there probably is a new iPhone in the works hopefully for this summer. This takes the camera and gets rid of that assumption given the specs being true. So that still leaves things like processor, memory, screen, and other hardware that the iPhone has to upgrade. Well given that since the iPhone, the 3G, then the 3Gs, all the hardware has pretty much been upgraded it would make sense that again this is going to happen again. I also remember seeing talk of a newer and nicer OLED screen fro the next iPhone, so a better screen makes sense, not necessarily bigger but nicer. A faster processor would make more sense as well given the competition and the heavy use these phones do. From what Iv seen with the iPhones in the past, they keep upgrading so to say they wouldn’t do such again would be rather silly. My last thought was on memory. The Droid boasts 16GB onboard, expandable to 32GB. The Nexus One has talked about expandability up to 32GB as well. Whoopidy doo! The iPhone 3GS does come in at 32GB internal with no expandability. An issue? I don’t really think so, but then again I don’t have crap-tones of music. I own an iPhone 3G 16GB, the max available at the time. Next came the 3GS with 32GB of memory. Well heck, to me it sounds like memory is double each time a new iPhone comes out (1st gen had 8) so what’s to say that we wont see a 64GB on the new phone? Makes sense doesn’t it? So already your 32GB expandability will be worthless, unless it has internal memory as well. That I don’t know, I have seen nothing on the Nexus One having internal memory, even so with its expandability, it wont match 64GB. So already you will get behind on capacity. Why wouldn’t you want large internal memory anyway? Perhaps that’s my bias since my phone is a glorified iPod-gameboy with a phone thrown in there, but having room for lots of files, music, video, and other crap seems pretty important without having to buy and upgrade.
Looking back over it all to me it seems like the Nexus One may ‘beat’ the iPhone for a short period of time, but if a new iPhone comes out this summer, again Apple will be ahead with a nicer phone and still the flock of people who love the iPhone. Again, call me bias, but I don’t ever want another smart phone other than the iPhone. Iv gotten too used to it and its features, though maybe not the best tech wise, still make it better than any other phone out there that I know of. So is an iPhone beater even really possible with Apple making patents and keeping others from taking the spotlight? Even iPhone hates can see it, phones want to copy Apple’s success with the iPhone. From ripping off its looks and interface to creating features like app stores for themselves. The iPhone is a pretty sweet ass phone, as behind as it can be. Can anyone really ‘beat it’? With stats showing 50% of Phone traffic being the iPhone…I don’t know.

Honestly if the rumors are correct that apple has already begun working on versions that can go on networks other than AT&T, as long as they dont load up the phones with worthless shit, I would change carriers if possible.
AT&T wont mind, they cant handle the network load.
im happy with my droid, but i will always keep my windows mobile device <3<3<3
The iphone just works.
As much as I hate apple, that's something I've never really gotten with other cellphones.
However my iphone works like I want my phone to. I don't have to jump through five hoops each time I want to go to internet, email or music.
Which apparently he says according to law that he is not obligated to fix broken computers even though they are/were insured.
People bought computers that broke down even 1 month after buying them and the "new" apple store refuses to fix things because now its apparently not covered by insurance.
Besides from the fact that the iphone here costs over 1000$ the cheapest version.
