WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers
genre: Adventure (not RPG! Got it now, reviewers ? ;) )
Producer: Square-enix
I'll start out by saying that many reviewers and a few gamers didn't understand this game at all. No, I'm not being fanboyish here. This game we got here haves its bad flaws and problems, but it's far by getting some of the votes it got (we're talking about votes going below the 6 or even the 5, 4 or 3!). Just another proof of how gaming media changed to pump up just the mainstream, super-important games and just push out of the way the games that aren't that important to them...talk about being impartial, uh ?
anyway, enough with the gaming media rant here or I'll branch off on the gamers themselves too X3 rather than ranting about games I rant about gamers, I'm like that >:3
anyway, FFCB is the new chapter of the CC saga on a nintendo console. It is quite different from all the other CC games though. While the Crystal Chronicles games are based on multiplayer and don't have much of a plot, Crystal Bearers is solely based on the single player and is pretty much a plot-driven game, talking about Layle: Layle is a Crystal Bearer. Crystal bearers are people with a part of their body crystallized and the only people who are able to use magic in a world where Technology is the main lead, while the bearers are treated like trash of the society.
Layle works along with a Selkie named Keiss as escort for a royal airship, wich is soon attacked by a storm of monsters and a member of the Yuke tribe, wich was supposed to be gone from this world. This starts off the game, with an epic game sequence of Layle skydiving with a huge gatling gun to get rid of the monsters and land on the airship to face the opponent.
The visual look of the game is quite good. It makes use of quite a few detailed textures, even on the characters' clothes, you can clearly tell there was some heavy work behind both the characters and the surroundings. I find some of the visual effects on par with some of the HD games, especially lighting effects on some surfaces or the power globes of Layle when he uses his powers. There's so much to say, this is, at least visually, one of the best games on wii. The locations are quite varied and lively, the characters move smoothly and, let me tell you, the cutscenes are something that we rarely seen on wii. I also noticed a little subtle reference to old PSX FF games, when we had CG cutscenes in wich a new place was shown for a few seconds to come back in game a few moments after. I wonder if someone else got that X3
Anyway, I'll say it again, this game surprised me for effects and visuals and it still shows how much the square teams are good at handling visuals, no matter the console they work on.
The gameplay is what irked most reviewers and yet something that reviewers didn't understand at all. First of all the game doesn't play like an RPG, like most people thought but it's more like an adventure game. Sure there's item equipping to raise your stats and have additional powers, but there's no level up or anything. The battle system is based on Layle's gravity powers. He's able to lift, throw and wack around enemies, people and different objects. In the battle someone may find picking up and throwing enemies or wacking them around repetitive after a while. This is where the "reward" system comes. This system pretty much bases itself on the gamer's creativity and his will to play around with the game. Monsters, NPCs and objects are studied in a way that some of them will have different reactions in different situations. So if you pick up a bone Hounds will stop attacking you and will hop happily around you. If you wack two bug monsters together they will get tangled in a ball that can be used like in a pinball to make a mess out of the other enemies. Plants will become deadly drills if picked up, fire will make Pyros explode and with some monsters, you'll also be able to use their own weapons against the others if you pick them up.
The award system is pretty much what makes the battle system so particular during the normal battles, since you can pretty much play around with the surroundings and find out more and more stuff. Despite the lack of level-up, clearing the battles in the different areas is not useless though. Defeating all the enemies will make you able to clear out the "miasma" in the sky, wich is what creates monsters in the first place. Clearing it out will let an item get out, wich will increase your HP units. Defeating enemies is also useful to get items out of them so that you can use them to craft equip items to use on you. Be careful though. Since the time is limited and after a while the Miasma will fade, making the place look more normal with animals and people going around their daily lives...things will get dangerous after a while though, so you can either sit and wait or play around with the people there, since this gives out awards too (one of the most fun ones I found was the laser scarecrows X3).
Battles and awards are not the only things the game has to offer...a huge world to explore with a lot of secrets, subquests, hidden chests (and subsequent awards for all the mentioned) await for you, so for people who loves to have big worlds to explore this game is quite the nice thing, especially since games like this are lacking on wii. The game also uses minigames to keep the game varied both trough the main adventure and the subquests. The minigames are quite well-implemented, enough not to look like mini-games but more like special events X3 they're fun, various and entertaining...though I suck at the soccerball game <.<
anyway, the gameplay does have its problems. Sometimes it isn't quite clear where you have to go, I would have preferred more control over the jumps (that can be auto-made with a single button, unluckily, making the effort quite unexistent) and the limited time in battles may annoy some of the gamers out there. It isn't true though that the absence of a map makes it easy to get lost. The world is huge yes, but since the locations are quite unique it isn't like they look the same. Plus there are insignia you can litterally pick up and they'll lead you to the places they are pointing you to (kind of like a GTA arrow, quite the original way to use this one X3). I got lost just once and it was just because I had to find a certain thing...wich was your mission at the moment, so blah :P didn't take too long anyways and my search was fun anyway...I found a secret place with tomberries! X3
The boss fights work in different ways, each of them is quite unique and that's what makes them fun as well...oh and epic, especially a couple of them, included the final one that really made me shiver with emotion, I assure you! what to say now ? oh yeah, the cities. I like how they made them lively, with people running about, doing random stuff depending on where you are...Cities are a nice place where to get awards too...yep, this game is pretty much filled with secrets for people who are curios and creative enough to find them. One example ? Bridge town. The second time you'll go in this place you'll find moogles moving trash in an area where the trash is disposed of. Now you can do two things. One is pick up a trash bag and throw it in the area, to dispose of it and get an award...the other thing takes a bit more time but it's quite funny...you just stay still in the middle of the area...don't touch the wiimote...Layle will sit down...the guards will look at you confused...and one of those moogles will come down and pick you up, mistaking you as trash pretty much...cute! :3 and ta-da, a new award!
this isn't the everyday game as you may see. It bases itself on creativity and imagination rather than the skill of the player to battle and stuff...wich is a new, interesting way to see things to me. let's move on though.
The story is the other strong point of the game. The relations between the different tribes are quite well-developed and explained, the characters are charming (especially Layle, one of the best main characters of this gen in my opinion), the cutscenes are well-made and the plot gets better and better the more you dive into the game, with quite the nice plot twists and stuff like that :3 it's something that will probably keep you playing until the end. Oh and the ending just screams for a sequel...please, gimme :3
The soundtrack is something I loved trough the entire game. Almost every tune is quite nice and it touches different genres, from country music to heavy rock, from atmospheric to epic. Yes, it is THAT good, worth of a high-profile adventure game.
To close off things the game haves its flaws and it's quite the unique take on the FFCC universe that not everyone are gonna enjoy, unless they have an open mind about new things...still it's quite disgusting how easily gaming media can bash a game for being different, it makes me realize how much of an effort reviewers put into playing a game they should review...if they don't feel that much like it they're just gonna look at all the negative things. I especially disliked how most people disguised this game as an RPG game while it's just an adventure game with a peculiar battle system. Guess they were angry about it not being how they wanted it :P reviewers should be impartial and should just analyze the game as it is and not base the judging just on their sole opinion...sure, they can give out what they think, but this shouldn't influence what the game is. That's what I think anyways.
nowadays a lot of gamers look more like spoiled kids ready to bash and baww as soon as they find the slightest reason, acting like snobby, high-profiled gamers who think their tastes are the best and the only right ones, or ready to defend their beloved console/hardware and bash the others as if they are football teams or something (this doesn't refer to anyone in particular)
I'm sorry for the sudden rant, but the way this game has been treated made me kind of snap out ^^; many of you know how I never rant about games or rarely do so anyway...I tend to rand more about gamers, who are the ones who most of the time ruin the fun of others with silly stuff like hardcore and casual, nerd raging, bashing and overall bawwing for a lot of things...it's childish, really o.o
ahem...sorry again x.x; anyway...I recommend this game to people who are looking for a nice adventure or to open FF fans. I'd suggest renting it or at least buy it at low price first, because I can understand how this game can't be enjoyed by everyone, due to its unique details.

Anyway, here are a few screens:

And thus ends a short rant of a Leafeon.
And you know chu I just realised your english writing skill is amazing :)
Also, whoooo, Trauma Team! :3
It offers nothing really new, but at the same time it was bashed for not being the "Hack n' Slash" everyone expected.
and I think when a game is given like "Final Fantasy" in a title, most would expect Turn Based RPG, or for the FFVII fan boys and up the ATB bar.
-_o though nothing against JRPGs, just that I find myself enjoying Westernized RPGs more addicting when it comes with re playability and being nontraditional [like what the FF series started as with it's first one.].
Infact nothing pulls your heart strings more than hafta choose between two favorite allies,
After reading those details of XenoBlade, I am quite interested in it now. I call it now though, that the life forms are parasites/bacteria to the bodies of the gods :V and it'll all be a story of how life can come from destruction :V
the huge world with varied places makes FFCB more interesting to me, likelihood of me getting it has gone up! I dislike how Square give a dispropotionate amount of attention to graphics though. that slightly turns me off.
This Fragile thing, sell it to me; what makes it something to look forward to?
