But really, at the risk of sounding corny the real winners were the rats ^_^
I went to the house of the person that wrote the email linked in the rat project journal and met some of the rescued rats firsthand. The babies are the CUTEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!
The mother that was found under the couch is now named Maestro. The three babies that needed nursing are now back to heath and the half-blind youngster has been adopted by the people that found him. He was so small, just barely the size of a mouse!
The babies were bright-eyed and inquisitive and the mother was the sweetest, she pulled my hand into the cage and made sure it was nice and clean with her tongue ^_^ She let me scritch some of the babies. I watched as she lay on top of a double-tiered hammock and one baby latching on her nipple was so involved with nursing he didn't notice that he rolled off the hammock, his little feet just stuck out as his bottom half hung in mid-air. His mother didn't seem perturbed, though it looked quite odd!
Of the others, many of the rescues from that place were very friendly. She had gotten most of them off Craigslist, it seems a lot of them are very well-adjusted to people thankfully! There was one that needed to be euthanized because it had both health and behavioral issues--very sad but unfortunately sometimes there's nothing you can do more to help.

I'm happy the rescued rats are improving.

me too, I was really worried when reading the story The rescuer told me more about the place they came from--they do seem smaller than average for their age. Thankfully, their temperaments seem wonderful, only a couple of the babies in that litter are nervous. Then again, I did not meet many of the rats that were adults, just the ones that hadn't yet been brought to foster homes. Some of the adults were rather nervous, so I heard but from what I understand everyone's health is improving fast, and the babies bounced back very quickly--I could not tell which other 2 were the sick ones ^_^

That's excellent. It is really goos that they were rescued and I hope that they all get good forever-homes.

I'm so glad everything came out for the best. It's heartwarming when people can actually make a difference in the lives of animals who've been mistreated. :3

I agree, success stories are what make it all worth it. I laughed when the just mother pulled my hand into the open cage so she could inspect it, so funny! It's wonderful that despite the uncaring home she had just come from she still loved people. It makes you wonder where the hoarder had "rescued" her from.

I dunno, but that in itself is a sign that things are as they should be. :3
