Obligatory Commission Prices and Policies Journal
15 years ago
General
Because I don't have one up and I have to open commissions soon. I: Here goes.
Recently I've been tossing back and forth the idea of raising my prices, due to the fact that I'm in college now, time is limited for me and my work for class has to come first. Also, I'm about to take on some bigger responsibilities, like paying rent for my future apartment and helping out with bills. I will probably never use my commissions for things like that on a regular basis since I am currently looking for a job to have this summer, but I would like it to be something I can fall back on in case of a serious emergency situation. Plus, that's usually when I only take in commissions anyways. I hope this is making sense so far. Another thing that factors into raising my prices is the fact that I got hounded on when I told my teachers and other faculty here at school I do commissions. They had asked how much I sell them for, I told them my usual prices and they pretty much gave me this in depth lecture speech of why I need to be more assertive with my prices. I agreed, but I also shared my feelings with selling stuff online and that sometimes you have to take your audience into consideration. That and it's nice to consider people's budgets, as you know, not everyone on the internet is loaded.
So, taking my own feelings into consideration, I have a wide variety of price ranges and hopefully, there will be something here that everyone can afford. I will also have days during the summer when I offer discounted commissions, simply because I have more time for art during the summer. That and of course, I will continue to do discounted sketches over livestream. (8 Since that has turned out to be very successful.
Things I will gladly draw:
Quads
Taurs
Humans
Anthros

Things I will never draw even if I was paid $1,000,000:
Fetishes, stuff like inflation, tentacles, scat, water sport, creepy fetishes in general. I'm truly sorry.
Baby Fur
Porn. Sorry, porn is for friends only. Hurr. However, I can do romance type stuff that leads to stuff like that.

How long does it take for a commission to be completed?
This really depends on what you order, and the fact that I have a life outside the internet. Sometimes commissions will only take me a week or two, and sometimes it'll take a few months. Normally when I'm not packed with other commissions to do, the general wait time will be a week to a month for small commissions, and a month to 4 months for a large commission. Normally the reason why the wait time is shifted is simply because I'm off doing work for my classes and I don't have time for art outside of class, not even for myself. That, or it can be shifted because I have other commissions to finish before I can get to yours, and once I finish those it's time for school or something and another few months go by until I'm out for break or something. So here's a friendly warning that it's quite the gamble with time if you commission me, sometimes it will be quick and sometimes you will have to wait. I'm trying to fix this, as I know people don't like to wait forever and I hate having a client wait for so long. It ends up making me feel guilty in the long run.
So to avoid waiting for so long, the best thing to do and what I heavily encourage is to keep in contact with me through notes or email, which I will gladly give to you upon your order. Check with me periodically for updates on your current status or others I may be working on at the moment, I will gladly give you a run down on my schedule. I also encourage setting a deadline, this usually works the best as I have found out in the past. I also suggest adding me on Livejournal, because there I update with what's going on with me at the moment that's holding me up from doing art. I also post WIPS and sketches there.
I also ask that you give me space when it comes to completing your commission, It's alright to check up on me maybe once every 3 weeks or so, but if you bug me every week or every day I'm just going to get annoyed. I tend to gladly throw in a little extra for those who have been very patient with me, whether if it's with an upgrade to your commission or an extra piece of art. So if you find yourself waiting for too long, I will definitely pick up on that and find a way to thank you somehow with a nice surprise.

Once I get my slots filled, I'll be doing the sketches again. C: I remember you wanting one, so I thought I would let you know.
First, you consider other's budgets before your own and have low prices. This yields a lot of work which does equal a steady flow of money but it also wastes more time. Also, you can get a HUGE queue of people waiting for their art and unintentionally make your fans mad due to the wait. This is most important for the fans with money who actually would support you more.
Second, you consider the time involved and set your rates appropriate to that. I'm not saying rip people off or overcharge. I'm just saying charge what is appropriate for your time. Think of it on an hourly wage basis if that helps. With that method you earn much more per piece, have more time to be more creative, and therefore more time to try new techniques and grow as an artist. You will have less of a queue and a more satisfied customer base as a whole. You may not please as many people by selling cheap continuously, but it does tend to benefit both sides more in quality and time. That doesn't mean you can't have a special once in awhile at a lower rate for fun and to give the lower budget folks a better opportunity to own a piece from you. You work both sides of the spectrum in that situation.
I have a lot of artist friends here on FA and other places. I just hate to see talented people sell themselves short and burn out early. There's no need to be a "starving artist" if you can strike the perfect middle ground with your fan base. You're obviously committed to your art and others here think you are selling cheap. Thanks for mentioning the sketch for me. I wasn't sure if I was still on any lists because of the recent posts you made. I was going to be sending you a tip whenever you did the sketch just so I wouldn't feel I ripped YOU off! :P I hope you are past your sickness and have a fun time at this con!
Just my opinion!
I wouldn't be surprised for that kind of icon to take ~2 hours (maybe more, maybe less), and at 12 bucks youre working for less than minimum wage there. In FL min wage is 7.25! (Living in the same state gives me the ability to state relevant local facts, HO HO HO.)
But you bring up a good point, I'll see when I do the rest of these icons. U:
Perhaps see how the workload feels with your new responsibilities and increase prices along with demand?
The goal i'd imagine.. is to reach the point where you are getting what you need from your craft while having time to do other things, too.
Your art is definitely worth it!
Take this with a grain of salt, obviously.
Ork!

all though, a trade would be very appreciated >: but all the good artists denies of course
cuz she'd look amazing in your style for realz
ARE U OPEN FOR THOSE BAGE COMMISSIONS RIGHT NOW?
