Contest!
If I haven't already told you,or if you have been in a coma for a few months, I bought a boat. She's not sea worthy yet, but I won't bore you with details. I'm going to name her Dawn Puffin and a photo of her dry sailing with her spars down is in my scraps folder. Anyway, when I get her shipshape and bristol fashion I'm going to work on embellishments like flags. "Flags are fun and most sailors know it since they fly lots of them" says John Rousmaniere. I would like to fly a private signal at my mast head.
This is where the contest comes in, so ignore that first paragraph if you haven't already. I would like you to design a private signal for my boat's owner and skipper. (Me) a private signal is a small flag that represents the owner of the signal and is flown on any vessel on which the flag owner is in command. Usually with symbols and such. I could easily design one my self, but I get too many ideas and I'm curious to see what everyone will come up with. And besides, but better judge of first impressions than people who aren't me. I might post an idea of mine too, but I can't come in first place.
Here are the rules:
1. It has to be simple. I'm probably going to make it myself, so no complicated or intricate designs or a hundred colors with gradient shading. Also the flag is small. According to The Annapolis Book of Seamanship "the dimensions are on the fly (horizontal), approximately 1/2 inch for each 1 foot between the water and the top of the mast. (About twenty give or take a few feet in my case) and on the hoist (vertical) two thirds length of the fly."
2. It can be of any flag shape; rectangle, pennant or swallow tail, whatever works best with your design.
3. It can not contain any vulgar language or depict something explicit. Not only do I not condone that sort of stuff, it's probably illegal. (Loophole: check out my highschool art. Not exactly explicit.) It also may not deface the United States ensign, the Pennsylvania ensign, or any other national colors. Pirate flags are perfectly legal, you see them all the time in the Caribbean.
4. It must reflect my personality and/or things I believe in or stand for as a person. I deeply love and respect the sea and all the creatures in it, particularly dolphins. it hurts me to know that some people willfully harm the above whatever I just said. Also, I'm completely open about my furriness.
5. There is no 5.
6. It can not be confused with other signal colors. I don't want people thinking I'm dragging my anchor when I haven't left the trailer. :P I'm sure you can look up the list of signals online.
7. Have fun. This is a contest for anybody, even furs who say they can't draw. I encourage everyone to participate. Your ideas are too precious to go unnoticed.
Prizes? First place prize is obviously seeing their design flying at my mast head. And I'll draw them a full color drawing of something of their choice. I'm not sure how it will be judged yet. Probably by your fellow furs and myself or whatever.
If everyone is OK with it, the contest will end in exactly one month. If enough people tell me they need more time, I'll fly the postponement signal. Or maybe it will end in two months but if no one is interested after one month, that's when we'll judge. Upload entries to your gallery, and send me a shout or note with a link.
Any questions? Ready... GO!
