Yesterday I got iOS 4 loaded on my ipod, only to discover that apple was arbitrarily blocking me from using two great new features, incorrectly saying they wouldn't work with my "outdated" hardware.
Today, I downloaded their shiny new iBooks ebook reader app - only to discover that it doesn't work either. Now, here's the real kicker on this one - IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK. The 2nd Gen ipod touch is in the list of units it's supposed to work on.
So, I think - well, maybe it's not working because I jailbroke my ipod to get back those features that apple was locking me out of. I figure the easiest way to check this is by seeing how the reviews for the app are, in their app store. If the reviews are good, then it's probably just me.
However, I'm looking at the reviews now, and I'm seeing a LOT of people reporting the exact same problems I'm having:
Can't download books - all downloads freeze at 99% and never finish.
Endless loop of asking me for my itunes password over and over and over, with it seeming to never accept it.
Books synced from itunes are loaded onto the unit (as evidenced by the itunes/ipod contents bar showing how much of my storage space is taken up with what kind of media) but never appear in the app. Not even the complimentary free book they give you to try the app out.
Here's the scorecard so far:
features apple lied and said wouldn't work: 2
features apple lied and said would work: 1
Take a bow, Steve-boy.
You're batting a thousand.

Oh, well...
The Kindle app is still superior, if only because anything you buy from Amazon can also be read on Windows, Mac, Blackberry, Android (coming soon) or even an actual Kindle.
Apple's rejected apps that had fewer problems than iBooks.
iBooks downloaded and ran successfully, even added a couple extra books-- Not like I REALLY needed it, as, like you, I use Stanza... :)
Although it would've been nice to have background wallpaper and multitasking, it doesn't bother me as much that I don't worry about it...and I'm a radio nut, so you can guess what the bulk of my apps are....
I wanted folders. :)
Help was nonexistent, so I had to find a Macworld blog to figure out how to do it.... Now I have my radio apps arranged by country. :)
iOS4 support in apps is lacking-- Unlike the updates for 3.1/iPad (3.2), where appmakers were given plenty of advance to prepare iOS4-compliant apps-- Apple did drop the ball on this part of it. So far, one app thinks it's on an iPad (EleMints), several have crashed, and so forth....
iOS4 has already proved to be more stable than 3.1.2/3.1.3 (which the latter has gone through 4 restores, and I was STILL restoring my music and Stanza libraries before iOS4 came out after the last one), and loaded perfectly on the first try.....though it took 8 hours for backup and restore. (Unlike previous versions, iOS4 requires a clean wipe of the iPod to be installed over old versions.)
Verdict: Good enough for "free", better than previous versions, not really all that much new on a small 2G iPod touch, folders are limited (12 apps per), a bit tedious in maintaining, but GREAT, appmakers should've gotten more of a heads-up, iBooks is good, but redundant (pretty bookshelf, though!).... Overall, OK, but not "gee whiz" spectacular....
One nice thing about Stanza and iOS4: Ya don't need the desktop Stanza anymore to transfer ebooks- Just go to the Apps tab in your iPod window of iTunes, and go down to the bottom half, where it says for apps that can transfer between your iPod and computer, click Stanza, and click "Add" to add ebooks. :)
Apple, however, is REALLY falling down over Apple TV, though
Apple DOES need a new direction, and they REALLY do need to shore up their cred of late... :(
