Round 5 Area:
New Content: Tief Forschend
World Area: Pylorus
Competitors: 4
Four lucky semi-finalists emerged from the dense jungle were the Climate Radiance slept, guided by a computer generated sprite. The path led along long avenues of trees through a verdant and natural land of bright greens, startling yellows and soft blues. For upwards of an hour the competitors of the VOCT new content tournament got to walk through exotic woodland and out onto a wide plain at the foot of a massive mountain range. Safe, secure and victorious! A chance to relax and not have to worry, about the troubles that had been plaguing the game or themselves.
There was Cyan, the flixard whose peculiar habit of vanishing and re-appearing as if she was logging in and out of the game had been causing the moderators some consternation. But her flightiness when it came to speaking to authority figures made it difficult to question here.
Arcoreas, the demonic ice fox who was stranded in the game, attempting to find his enemy Kathar, save himself from being deleted and maybe, just maybe get the hell out of here with his companions. Still waiting on help from Saren Avont and the Administrator to maybe fix his problem and set him free.
Lillan who had returned to the competition after losing and had proven time and again that size didn’t matter. The petite geek who unbeknownst to anyone else had been picking up code and amalgamating it as part of her being, evolving and changing in ways that were not normal.
Finally emerging last from the jungle was Manganeel Terontrem, he was on his own at the moment not having been able to take the Bottom Feeder into the Climate Radiance. That wouldn’t last however, he’d come this far and still seemed to have his eyes fixed on the goal of winning and sticking it to the mods whenever he could. Oh and avoid being kidnapped and used as a key for nefarious purposes yet to be revealed.
Waiting for them was the moderator Danny, the demi-fox's dark red hair made him stand out against the backdrop of cloud shrouded peaks. Smiling he raised a hand in greeting, waiting for everyone to gather around him. "Welcome everyone, it is good to see you all here, you lucky four are in for a treat for every one of you and your supports have earned the right to see Tief Forschend."
Turning to one side, arm coming up to point the clouds shrouding the mountain parted on cue leaving behind little wisps of fog that coiled about the mighty edifice now revealed. Standing atop a high plateau a castle looked out upon the continent of Pylorus. Rising seamlessly from the rocky pinnacle upon which it was built the castle was huge. A great outer wall topped by green roofed towers the outer slopes blended with the rock, coated in trees and grass as if someone had come along and shaped the mountain top into walls. Beyond those walls three huge circular keeps rose into the sky, tiered Miniature Mountains of red stone, green tiles and branching towers. Linked together by stone walkways high in the air and flittering between them could be seen strange wooden conveyances powered by steam engines.
From the keep on the left, huge smoke-stacks stood against the sky pumping plumes of thick grey smog into the air. Giant doors in the side of the keep opened from time to time to let a mighty airship fly out. The keep to the right seemed to be made up of tiers, split up into small buildings and towers rising upwards toward a great domed, glass roofed chamber at the very top. Finally the keep in the centre was the widest and tallest, towering above the rest of the castle, great glass windows, strange towers and roof top gardens draped with greenery and even trees. The most spectacular part however was the huge counter rotating clock in the centre of the keep. Six great rings of metal slowly ticking around one another and the huge opening in the centre the allowed airships to dock.
One could well imagine that the Hidden Bird was meant to slide into that great docking port, past the huge bronze gears and steam workings of the clock to allow swift entrance to the castle. Outside the lower walls of the keeps were divided by streets and districts dedicated to what looked like shops or houses, an entire city safe and secure behind those massive outer walls. Everywhere you looked clockwork and steam engines sat side by side with beautiful architecture and green plants. A melding of life, nature and steam punk, from were they all stood at the base of the mountain a switch back ramp led up toward the peak, passing through several watch houses on the way.
"How the hell do we get up there?" Cyan asked staring at the castle. "I mean it's impressive but I am not walking up that hill!"
Smiling Danny pointed at a yellow and blue wooden air cab descending the mountain toward them. "I called ahead for a taxi of course." The propeller driven engines at the front of the wooden carriage tilted up and the whole conveyance landed with a slight bump on the grass, rolling to a halt. A door slid open and Danny ushered everyone aboard. "We'll be there in no time." The air car lifted off once everyone was aboard, flying up into the sky, heading toward the grand castle Tief Forschend with its passengers.
The interior of the castle turned out to be as grand as the exterior, giant vaulted halls of marble and stone laid with purple carpets that ran along the centre of each corridor leaving the edges as clear stone. Great works of art, fantastical tapestries and suits of armour lined the way from the taxi dock to a great hallway. An interchange of three different passes with a great fountain depicting some ancient hero in battle providing a place to stop and enjoy a little bit of nature. Danny continued to lead his small party through the castle however, slow enough that people could admire but not really stop without loosing everyone. The demi-fox moderator led the group of players through a large stone archway and onto a waiting elevator. Made from cast iron and seemingly powered by a set of controls that looked like they had come out of a 1950s movie. Bronze levers and little dials, throwing the switch the elevator car lurched and started to rise.
"We are going to the top floor were you will be briefed on how this round is set up, you are fighting for the chance to pass on to the finals. The lucky two winners, our finalists will return to this elevator and get the chance to travel down to the lowest level and exit into the final stage of Pylorus. For the duration of your stay the elevator will not go any lower then were we started. The upper castle, the city outside and the other two keeps will all be open to you to explore and enjoy but the lift shaft down to the final arena is sealed."
With a hiss of steam and a clank of spinning cogs the elevator settled to a halt at the top-most level, the metal gate at the front clicked down and the moderator led them out into a large, expensive looking hallway. Stopping outside a pair of double doors he bade everyone wait whilst he popped inside to check they were ready to begin.
A short wait later and the doors swung open, revealing a huge hall, purple carpeting ran down the centre toward the far wall were a huge stained glass window depicted the moon surrounded by a frosty halo. Standing to either side of the carpet the moderators Jacqueline, Danny and Russet were waiting. Each dressed in a fanciful outfit that anyone who played computer games should recognize. White Mage, Black Mage and Red Mage respectively all from the original Final Fantasy game. The lanterns hanging from chains dimmed and Danny stood forward, face in shadow from the wide brim of his hat he smiled at the gathering.
"My friends, welcome to round 5 of our little game, for this round I give you... your host!"
A hiss of steam, the whir well oiled gears, the thump of hydraulics and the ceiling descended slowly. A dais supported by machinery, as the space between ceiling and platform grew thick white mist flowed through the gap in the ceiling obscuring the contents from sight. As the machinery clacked and clattered music started to play and the familiar voice of David Bowie emerged from speakers hidden in the walls.
"As such a sad love,
Deep in your eyes a kind of pale jewel,
Open and closed within your eyes,
I'll place the sky within your eyes.
As the music played and the mist began to thin, small clear glass spheres began to float out of the obscuring fog.... Flowing through the air, each one burst when it touched the floor; a pair of figures in beautiful clothing emerging from the sparkling shards, partners joining hands and swirling around in an elegant formal ball room dance.
By the end of the song the hall was filled with dancing figures wearing fanciful masks. Men in brilliant suits, women wearing stunning ball gowns, sequins, feathers, brocade and silk filled the room. As the last of the fog cleared everyone could see the figure lounging indolently in the throne atop the dais.
Black fur arranged neatly, well groomed and styled, his hair a shock of messy white standing up in all directions cascading down about his shoulders. A frilly black coat that hugged his form tight leather trousers and a white shirt over-flowing with lace made up his outfit. It certainly wasn't from Final Fantasy and the glass balls he raised in one hand and started to spin around each other with practiced ease identified him as none other then Jareth the Goblin King. Looking down upon those gathered Stank smiled as if in recognition of his adoring subjects as a spot light clicked on from above, causing the sequins in his jacket to shimmer as those silent dancers continued to pirouette about the dance floor.
"Welcome everyone to round 5, the Tief Forschend is happy to invite you all to join us at tonight’s celebration."
"Stank...." Russet said staring at the skunk, breaking the stupefied silence caused by Stank's clothing
Blinking at the odd costumes of his fellows as he noticed what they were wearing the other skunk shook his head, "Interesting outfits guys... very mmm Final Fantasy, this is Labyrinth."
"But you instructions said..." Russet started but Danny shook his head and the other skunk just shrugged and rolled with it. Adjusting his hat the braided red mage turned smoothly to face the gathering. "Ladies and gentle men, I give you Stank the dapper king of the Goblins! Master of the Tief Forschend"
"Anyway! In a moment we will activate the instance! The entire castle will be enveloped and you will find yourself teleported to random locations throughout. You will all be furnished with brilliant, fantastic costumes that I’ve designed for you all! Masks, gloves wigs, there are gowns for the ladies, suits for the men. My little gift to you all, you've all been such great sports everyone deserves to look as brilliant and fashionable as me!"
Resting her microphone staff against one shoulder Jacqueline spoke, "Sorry about the costumes, Stank got to pick the theme for this round." The arctic fox smiled at the four hapless figures before her, a predatory smile. "If anyone wants to escape Stank's idea of fashion my stomach is open to guests."
Turning to face the others Russet spoke. "Well everyone, we wanted to give our personal congratulations on you all reaching the Semi-Finals." Reaching out to one side he gripped a long velvet bell rope that had uncoiled out of the air. "Have fun and good luck." He pulled the rope and the roaring hiss of a steam whistle filled the air as the four semi-finalists vanished in flashes of light, the game had begun.
