WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Goldeneye 007
Genre: FPS
Developer: Eurocom (Duke Nukem 64, Dead Space: Extraction...)
Publisher: Activision
Players: 1-4
Time spent on it: 10 hours (not counting online time)
The original Goldeneye has always been a milestone for all the FPS that came after it and it was known for its very fun and tight multiplayer and also for its peculiar single player mode, something that in online-based FPSs of the last years always kinda felt lackluster.
This new reimagining of the original tries to take what Goldeneye did and modernize it to the actual FPS standards, going for a focus on both the multiplayer and the single player aspects. How did it come out ? Well, let's find out :3
from the graphical standpoint the game doesn't do anything too amazing, but it achieves to have some impressive visuals in some levels (a couple of good examples are the snow level and the night club) and make use of great lighting and special effects (Explosions are pretty X3). The models of the characters look nice enough, but it can be easily noticed how the main character ones are more plished than the “random characters” even though you'll rarely have chance to look at every little detail of the models while you're in the middle of a shooting sequence X3 Facial expressions and movements are well made and the overall movements of every single character looks very realistic and natural...wich is granted since they used body motion capture tech for this game, wich already proves the amount of effort put into it :P
I really like the detail they put into weapons too, as before, nothing mindblowing, but quite detailed and well-made. Overall the graphic look does its job, looking very nice to the eye and managing to pull off very nice light and special effects to improve the experience for our eyes:3 More detail could've been put on some of the levels probably, but nothing major.
The gameplay is pretty much taken from a modernized FPS, but in the single player campain really shines for the approach you can take in every level. The levels alternate cleverly wide open areas to narrow passages, keeping some sort of linearity, but at the same time giving the player a nice freedom of action. Except for the events in wich you do HAVE to shoot your way through the battlefields, in most situations you'll find yourself choosing if to go through the sections of the levels with an actionish approach or simply try to be all stealthy and the game, in this case, gives you quite a few options to do so, with hidden tunnels to sneak in, the ability to hack automatic turrets, take out cameras and other stuff.
I really like the creativity they put behind the concept of levels too. The levels aren't just a simple map to fight in, there are many interactive elements, there are covers that can be destroyed the more they're shoot at (so if you hide behind a frail panel you should be ready to not stay there for long, or if you hide behind a crate expect some projectile to pass through as it destroys the wood.) and lots of interactive elements that can help you getting rid of enemies faster...it goes from the classic explosive barrels and cars to fire extinguishers and even projectors hanging from the ceiling that you can shoot at to make it fall down.
This gives to the single player campaign all another level of approach...it isn't the classic shoot and duck, shoot and duck, but rather it pushes the player to carefully studying the situations, his surroundings and then decide the course of action he can take, also depending on the weapon he's currently equipped with, making it really pleasant when you get to discover a new way to get rid of enemies in the levels...a self-satisfication that many will appreciate I'm sure X3
The controls may have to be accostumed depending by what kind of player you are. The standard wiimote and nunchuck mode is my fave :P the game gives you the choice of remote controls and classic controller, so it's quite versatile depending by what kind of FPS player you are. The wiimote pointer is perfect as always and the controls are mapped well enough to make everything easy and direct for the player.
Some may notice similarities to Call of Duty given to certain gameplay elements regarding the shooting and the commands, but please, don't mistake this for a simple CoD with James Bond. It's all another thing and it got the best single player campaign I've seen in quite a lot of time in FPS games of the latest years (I think the last one with a huge focus on the single player was Bioshock).
Also, a special mention goes to the Tank level...serious power there XP I loved it X3
ahem, anyway, the multiplayer mode is...just...downright...fun. It's been a while since I had the chance to have an FPS able to be played in the same room and it was a great refreshing experience to play with my brothers and friends again. The multiplayer mode, beside having quite a nice selection of modes it haves certain variants you can turn on and off wich will make the experience ridicolously hilarious...my fave one is the option that makes players blow up if they bump into each others: priceless X3
the game also haves a VERY wide variety of characters to choose from, an experience system and an equipping system for the online mode, wich will let you improve your own asset of weapons and equipments, going for some quirky gadgets that will help you to make your way through the online battlefields. Unluckily the game lacks voicechat, wich is a real shame because the game would've had a further boost with it, but nothing that I can't fix with skype myself, so blah :P
moving on the story, being a reimagining, Goldeneye bases itself very loosely on the original game and movie, even changing the looks of the characters. If this is a good thing or bad thing it can't be judged, since it's up to the single person to see that. While the story, as in almost every FPS isn't the focus of the story, I really liked how they gave the game a cinematic feel, making every scene packed of action, quicktime events and cutscenes, wich chained with the actual gameplay really well, not breaking the flow in any way. I should also say that the final scene and what happens in it felt quite epic to me, if I can say an opinion :P
It is certainly a nice cooperative work of cutscenes and gameplay anyway, and even if the story isn't anything mindblowing, it haves quite a few surprises and turnabouts of events that will certainly feel nice to the player and move the game forward quite well.
The soundtrack of the game is something I REALLY enjoyed, with dynamic music changing depending by the action, going with a mostly orchestral and epic approach. The game also has one of the coolest intro songs I have ever heard, at least to me, it...really was a nice song and I think I'm gonna get it soon X3
How does Goldeneye compare to the original in the end ? Well, people expecting a full-fledged remake should take a step back and see things through again. This game is a reimagining of the original, striving not to be a simple cash-in review, but something that can stand out on its own, while still paying homage to the original game. The multiplayer is fun as the original used to be and there's a large focus on the single player mode too.
The single player will last around 10 hours or so...even more if you actually pick the “classic 007” mode wich will make the game scrap the regaining health system to go for the good old medikit seeking, thing that makes the game even more challenging and the margin of error way thinner. A challenge for real FPS players I'd say :3 A special not also goes to the AI of the enemies, really well made...they cover, duck, run behind hiding places and pretty much try to surround you and take you from behind too.
I want to suggest this game to all FPS lovers actually...this game gives you both motion and classic controls, different levels of challenges for both people who prefer regaining health or classic health with medikits to seek for. It's probably one of the best FPSs available right now, judging all consoles. And hey, maybe we can challenge each other online now and then! >:3

that's all for this week! See ya next week and have a good nintendo gaming time!
The only thing that ruins it for me personally is Daniel Craigh... Ugh!
The movies\games are good, but lately it's as if companies got a kick for ugly looking main characters these days. First James Bond, then Jazz Jackrabbit, Spyro... makes me wonder who's gonna be next? =P
anyway, I'm looking foreward to Epic Mickey and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
Monkey Ball looks interesting and The Last Story looks like a blatand Final Fantasy rip-off which is the reason why I find it interesting! XD
Radiant Historia looked interesting... until I saw the fighting system, then I was like: "Ooh, it's that kinda company again!" =P
LOL! X3
Anyway, great review Sparky!
Keep up the good work. ^_^
To other people reading this comment: DO NOT REPLY!
I read it all, and I have to say that Im curious to try some of the games coming out. Mostly Donkey Kong Country, Epic Mickey, and the digimon game. Mostly cuz I liked Digimon world 2, except that the evolutions were all messed up ^^
Thanks for the info!
Combine that with the pics/video link, it makes it nigh irresistible :3
plus uhm...you pretty much filled your post with spoilers and despite the warnings I get the feeling that people will read them before realizing <.<;
Lucky for hidden comment then... owo;
Then better not say it before people reading it then. Even if i put the spoiler tags right place this time.
I still like DKCR very good game but I'm also bit disappointed on those parts. xD It's strugggle between those two.
It is still very good game reason why i beat it otherwise i wouldn't keep playing it. ^w^;
Good start for the Wii no less :P
