I'm a Lumberjack!

By Dragoneer, 4 years ago
We've been seeing some issues with FA running slow lately, and we've updated quite a bit behind the scenes to try to combat that. With our new server, Sparkz, we're doing some more advanced logging to try to track down and curb leechers.

Let me preface: we have no problem with people using the site, even heavily. We do, however, take issues with people scripting downloads, and that we can easily curb.

Use the site, but don't abuse it. As of writing this, there's about 7,500 of you all sharing the connection. That peaks up to 8-10K at night, sometimes even more (yes, really - that much!). It's a big site, but we still ask that people use it within reasonable limitations.

12 hours of data

We're tracking volume, not data. We're already seeing some interesting (and unusual) statistics out there. In less than 12 hours, we've already seen one user soak up as much data as four other users in the top 10 (1.79GB of data downloaded). That user has no watches, no page views, nothing. Guess what that person is? Yep. Scripter. And that's not something we're cool with.

If we suspect that you're using scripts to leech and seed we won't ban you, but we will rate limit you IP down to more reasonable levels.

Routezilla, our Cisco 7301, will stomp you.

And if you continue to do it after that... well... =)

computer talk is so confusing lol

so basically your looking out for guys trying to mess with the site?

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Not mess with, but... use more than their fair share of the site. =)

The data is free, and we don't charge for it. That said, there /are/ still limits to "free".

Why would someone want to download all of FA? Trying to back it up in case they lose Internet access? That's just bizarre.

  ethanblack

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

See sites like Paws.RU that thrive on ripping off other people's art. It's not beyond whoever runs a site like that to sit a bot in FA to sap all of our juicy porn out.

  webster

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

That just seems like a waste to me.

  ethanblack

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Well, Paws.RU exists to circumvent law and rip people off, so I doubt this sort of thing is beyond those people.

  lionus

Actually, some of those site-rippers charge to view the artworks ripped off from free sites like FA. In a waY, it is a form of cybercrime.

So that's why I'm getting ads all of the sudden?

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

What do the ads have to do with anything?

  vertigo1

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

I think Mitch is referring to the fact that the ads are showing up now, with adblock plus enabled. (not that I'm complaining, they don't bother me.)

  osprey

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

I just blocked the address the ad images were hosted from. Haven't had a problem yet.

  vertigo1

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Honestly, subscribing to the Easylist USA feed blocks the 99% of the advertisements I would have seen anyways. The ads on here are done in such a way that they aren't fucking annoying. They're simple, to the point, and don't induce a damn seizure if you happen to glance in their general direction. This is the kind of advertising that needs to be encouraged. Hell, if it wasn't for the FA adverts, I doubt I would've found some of the webcomics I follow now. (ie: Concession, Furthia High, Pride of Life, etc)

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Using scripts to mass download galleries, even the entire site. We can track it, block it, perma block it. It's really easy to see who's doing it.

  danza

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Oh I see, I remember someone giving me a program that could let you view thousands of images on FA at the same time, as well as mass download them xD

I can't remember who he was x..x I don't think we spoke much x3

  doomtrout

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Ugh, I feel like such a noon for asking this, but what exactly are they trying to download the ENTIRE site for? Not a RS or a Megaupload, seeing as how the site is free anyway... I'm just so confuse, and I just know the moment I submit this it'll occur to me...

  atego

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

I don't know either. A gallery from a single artist or a few favorite artists would be understandable,
but whole damn site? After reading this journal, my expression was exactly like your icon.

Some folks do not spend the time finding the good free sites (like FA) by themselves and so pay to have it served up to them by cyber-thieves.

Perhaps posting what you'd consider are acceptable limits for those who are scripting interactions with FA might be an idea. Sorta like a Best Practise policy for unattended interaction.

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

We don't have that information yet. We're in a wait and see.

But unless you're scripting on the site to mass download stuff... you have no worries.

  bellecandie

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Oh I'm not at all. And if I was I'd have already done some sort of limiting AND would have discussed it with FA staff beforehand. But that's me. Others need a polite reminder of netiquette at times.

  drurowin

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

  plytiger

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

Anyway I was wondering why it was running slow recently.
The autoban hammer sound scarry especially if it goes crazy if it malfunctions @_@

  drurowin

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

I was wondering why as well... especially since we just upgraded our internet and even when it was 1.2 Mbps it never loaded that slowly.

So, you're driving along the Autoban, just minding your own business, when all of a sudden {{BAM}}! Some robotic dragon thing with a gigantic mallet smashes you off.

I wonder at what levels I am, since I'm a total artwhore.

  dracoloricatus

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

So, I'm not sure why you would ever want to download all of FA; there's way too much crappy stuff on it. But I could definitely see the appeal in wanting to just script a download of all the art of some set of artists, and doing it in a sane manner I wouldn't consider to be bad.

Maybe you could set a limit of "This is a download rate that we consider reasonable for sustained activity," so conscientious scripters can rate-limit themselves?

If it was really a problem, you could conceivably track the activity on all accounts, and if someone is averaging too high a download rate you could start sending them a page that's like "You're downloading too much porn right now--go do something outside for the rest of the hour." Kind of like an hour-long ban or something.

"Scripting" is a system of high-level programming that allows someone to automate a process.

In this context, we're talking about scripts that crawl through the FA content server and just download everything they see.

  atego

(No Subject) Posted: 4 years ago

  Actually, you haven't.
The screenshot is loaded from a different domain,
'Neer has his own subdomain here, it's not the normal gallery space.
Generally, linking in graphics from a separate webspace/photobucket is allowed.
I think, the rule in the AUP has a different purpose:
To prevent, that members flood their galleries with desktop screenshots and other non-art junk.

My one question would be why on earth would someone try to download the whole of FA? Unless they're a major porn monger, there's no way they're going to be able to look at all the submissions themselves. Then again, I suppose they could mass upload them to another site or something, some of the image sites have images on them that came from mass downloads.

This is nothing compared to an automated downloader.
Big chance, if these pics always are the same ones,
that they are loaded from your local browser cache 9 out of ten times.
The browser asks the server, have these files changed.
When the server answers no, the browser uses the local copies.
Unless the cached files have expired. But that is usually a week or longer.

Better idea: Download the pics to your pc, then you still have them,
when they are removed from the server.

turns out i download what i want to put into my collections i miss i know i download almost a couple hundred images totaling up to a max of 200MB at one time or another, every day is different and i store data for collective purposes but also to help people who have already downloaded these and help them retrieve them without having to go back and re-download them all again single image at a time.

but mostly soon itll be less images ill have downloaded per day.

sounds like every day all images uploaded per day are being taken or at least all the good ones they enjoy.
