I think it would be wise (though I don't know if this is actually already going on) for a lot of furries to stop thinking about their own niche fan base when it comes to comics and stories. Lackidaisy is a good example you don't hear any furry lingo (or any kind of lingo probably have to thank the period it takes place for that) Oversexualized or unrealistically sexualized characters. A lot always seems to cater to comedy relating to internet memes, or just plain erotica with no further story development aside from the sex. There are growing exceptions (Cruelty, Dog Days of Summer) but even with those I get the feeling there could be more. Drama (the story telling sense of the word) is something I haven't seen a lot of in comics when I used to collect them (until I had no more money left to do so *cry*) without some supernatural element, apocalyptic setting, amazing power thrown in... or zombies.
Maybe I'm just looking at too much, I learn that when "movies/video games/books suck these days." it usually means said persons over indulged in them too much and it all became too predictable. The demand for furry content is there I think the type of content furs would like to see the most is far and in between whether it be a Watership Down, Elephantmen, Saga of Rex, Pride of Baghdad, Sonic the Hedgehog, Yets, or Dinotopia.
I also think it doesn't help with the way our society is towards sexual content. Would Lord of The Rings have been less of a story if there was a little more explicit love scene between Aragorn and Arwen in the books (well sexual exploits are more descriptive in books in general (raymond e feist Shadow of a Dark Queen, David Patersen The Jester) and they don't get labeled as erotica.) I can give a copy of Cruelty to a co worker and she will enjoy it as is but because of that explicit scene most may just be down right offended and that to me is sad. I don't expect everyone to like anything and I don't get any sort of uneasy feeling anymore relating to certain books I have in my collection. I always leave my Heavy Metal issues lying around no problem... furry took some time, but it is kind of frustrating that I know I have to keep certain books to myself (at least I think I do) when it comes to average jane and joe.
I mean we see sex everywhere in ads, tv and movies. But the animal aspect is what drives people away, it's already a taboo in that sense alone much like homosexuality was in the 1950s I think whether we like it or not one day the glass floor we are walking on is going to give way and furries who create certain content are going to have to stand up for their right to do so and so will the rest of us standing up against the usual accusations except it will be on a national news level. less we crumble under ridicule and give in to what is considered social norms I think it all needs to be pushed forward a little while retaining a mass appeal somehow. I still retain there is nothing to defend I just think there is some attitudes and moral views people need to overcome for this culture to become bigger at a faster rate. Anything mainstream with animal characters is geared towards kids or adult humor (like Mongrels) why can't we see the equivalent of Citizen Kane in a Anthropomorphizing style.
I think we could see that but furries need to continue looking out of their own fandom to find it. When we do we need to let these people know who are their most dedicated fans and that they would do much better selling at a furry convention of 2000 compared to a comic convention of 100,000, because as of right now the best furry creators are not involved with our fandom because it is just way too small.
But one thing at a time, it's still illegal for gays to get married or serve in the military for christ sakes in America of all places.

I agree with your point in the 3rd paragraph that the majority of people who can potentially invest in this art/culture are, by my 'liberal' definition anyway, often overly sensitive to explicit sexual content and that is why as you say in the 1st paragraph we should try to "think outside niche fan bases" (at least if we seek wider investment from the likes of people like them). Now tell me if you think I'm off base here but; I would guess this arises from the fact that they received thier ability to invest in art because they already "crumbled under ridicule and gave in to what is considered social norms" (it seems to be how alot of people get higher paying jobs, which I blame precious few for doing if they have mouths to feed/serious debts to pay) and now they believe it best to perpetuate those norms not out of choice but necessity, because losing face could mean losing a job and therefore a fulfilling lifestyle.
I think alot has been learned here in this place with the "Glass Floor" called furry where we can be ourselves without too much worry of confronting mind-robbing accusations though, and I think that the opposition we all share to the banning of gay marriage and "don't ask don't tell" in the military is proof of that. My theory is that much of the proponents of these right wing agendas are based not in sound evidence but in ignorance and fear because they were too afraid (or lacked the mental faculties) to take a good long mature look at things that depict important sectors of the collective consciousness like art that contains sexually explicit content and see it as an important reflection of what it means to be human.
As for why the personified animals/animalized people drive people away......I'll stop while I'm ahead and crystallize those thoughts into words in some other comment box somewhere....... we don't have all day after all.
