new screens:
http://www.nintendoeverything.com/index.php/59124/
new trailer:
http://www.nintendoeverything.com/index.php/59126/
new details:
-Many ways to interpret the Dream Drop Distance name
-One interpretation relates to the game’s action elements
-“Dropping” from heights and “Distance” involving gameplay which take advantage of 3D and the ability to move long distances
-Yasushi Yasue: “We want to place particular focus on the form of the new Kingdom Hearts action. We want to give the game the feel of breaking speed. We’re doing a lot of trials on the development hardware, and when you actually play it, the control feel will be even better than it looks.”
-Some differences in gameplay from past titles in the series
-Switch off between Sora and Riku throughout
-Yasue” “The strategy and tempo all have a fresh feel”
-Tetsuya Nomura: “As always, we’ll have plenty of surprises. To show these surprises, we selected the 3DS, which is hardware that lets us challenge new things.”
-Storyline is “the prologue for the final battle as the story approaches the final stages for the current series just ahead of the Kingdom Hearts series’ 10th anniversary”
-Character switching will be forced upon you
-The switches are sudden
-Suddenly switch while battling and when walking around town
-Key word “drop” relates to something falling
-3D effect more about going in the screen rather than having things pop out
-Game not at a point in which a release date can be discussed
-One screenshot from Famitsu shows Sora standing in a faceoff with Xehanort
-Another screenshot shows Riku in a face off against Ansem
-Sora and Riku appear to encounter different bosses
-Another shot: Sora running through a bell tower (new world)
-Another shot: Sora falling down into a crowded plaza (new world)
-Sora swings from poles
-Riku kicks off walls
-Sora slides down ropes at high speeds
-The image associated with the name is “the distance you fall in your dreams”
-The three words have a number of meanings
-“Drop” is related to the gameplay
-According to Tesuya Nomura, if you take Kingdom Hearts as a base and evolve it like Final Fantasy, you get Final Fantasy Versus XIII; evolve the Kingdom Hearts qualities further to get Kingdom Hearts 3D
-Versus XIII forms a pair with Kingdom Hearts 3D in and the future Kingdom Hearts series in terms of gameplay
-Moves in KH3D provide a glimpse at the image of the future of the series, and Kingdom Hearts III
-Game’s concept is “bold actions”
-Nomura thinks numbered Kingdom Hearts games should have proper and orthodox evolutions
-Team wants to try bold elements for non-numbered games, including KH3D
-KH3D to be bolder than Birth by Sleep
-Nomura: “By playing this, you will probably understand how Kingdom Hearts III will evolve”
-The Mark of Mastery test will only be in some parts of the game
-Character switches will have nothing to do with where you are in the story
-Numerous secrets to the Drop Gauge
-Nomura says you should think of the character switches as something like a countdown event always taking place
-Riku/Sora stories are different
-The two stories don’t have the same goal
-Different actions and controls for the characters (relates to a new system which hasn’t been shown)
-Nomura wouldn’t acknowledge that the bell tower world looked like it was from Hunchback of Notre Dame
-New worlds in the game have been often requested by fans
-No number given for the amount of new worlds
-Nomura: “Also, there are still titles that were not announced this time”

WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Donkey Kong Country Returns
Genre: 2D Platformer
Developer: Retro Studios (Metroid Prime series)
Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1-2
Time spent on it: around 20 hours
During last E3 Nintendo announced many unexpected comebacks, such as Kid Icarus or Goldeneye...Goldeneye came up a few days ago confirming itself as a great game. Along with those two another game came back: Donkey Kong Country. With Rare belonging to microsoft and actually developing kinect stuff, Retro Studios is the new team that was chosen to develope the fourth chapter of the Country series, more than 15 years later the last release.
Let's see how the “new Rare” handled the thing :3
Retro Studios removed a couple of elements from the older games, like the underwater levels and the Kremlings as enemies, now replaced by the Tiki Tak tribe. On the other hand they added their own touch to the game, wich in my opinion made the game not only as great as the old ones, but also gave it a feeling of uniqueness to it.
Plus hey, they can always get underwater levels and kremlings in a potential sequel since the game sold well X3
anyway, let's analyze the game: first field: graphics. If you're a Retro Studios fan you'll know that they always blended great artstyles with great graphic looks. DKCR does no exception, featuring a great look, both on the artistic and technical side of things. The game isn't as “dark” as the old country games, prefering to go for a more colourful and vibrant style, kinda treating every level like a work of art, not only on the visual field (like the sunset levels wich look gorgeous), but also on the acustic field, but you'll understand once you stumble in a certain level ;3
DK, Diddy and the enemies move very smoothly, spurting personality out from each single detail, proving how even a simple 2D platformer can have a high budget and attention for detail behind it. Also kudos to the design of the Tiki Taks, wich gave a real personality to a new kind of enemy that will probably work alongside the kremlings as DK villains from now on.
You can seriously spot the artstyle of Retro in here, even though the setting and the target of the game is quite different. When you notice something like that you can tell that a dev team really haves a right idea of what they're doing somehow. It's like being constant, yet innovating at the same time helps you a lot in this industry.
Ahem, anyway, the graphic standpoint of the game is amazing and a joy to the eyes. Moving onto the gameplay now :3
The gameplay is pretty much an evolution of the old DKC-styled one. Jumping, rolling and throwing barrels elements are still there, but RS added quite a few new additions to it. The one you'll notice first is how this time both Diddy and DK have a lifebar of two hears each. This might seem to make the game easier...believe me, it doesn't X3 I'll explain later why.
When you get Diddy you'll have him cling on DK's back and this will give you a chance to use Diddy's jetpack, wich will make jumps longer, but will also make high-jumps on enemies slightly harder to execute as you'll have to get the right timing. Unluckily in the single player mode you can't play as Diddy, a decision wich left some irked, but that will be up to you. In the 2-player co-op both monkeys are playable though and if you ever need to go through hard jumping sequences, you can have the player using Diddy climb on DK's back so that you can execute the jumps without any trouble (afterall there isn't the competition element from NSMB wii, plus this game is a lot more difficult, a good way to keep things from being frustrating).
The developers also added a couple new commands wich are the ground-smash move from the SSB series, wich is useful to topple enemies over or to unveal some hidden stuff or even to push buttons. There's also the the “blowing” move, executed by pressing down and with a simple flick of the wiimote...flicking both nunchuck and wiimote at the same time executes the ground-smash. The blowing move seems useless at first but it's useful to blow at flowers wich will unveal secret bananas/coins/puzzle pieces and also to take out fireplaces, wich will unlock some engines. It's also useful to get rid of flaming enemies, making them vulnerable to your attacks.
The good old rolling move of DK is back and can be executed by pressing left or right and flicking the wiimote. Some found this control frustrating, but honestly I ddin't really have any problem with it. It just can't be spammed and must be used with a certain timing...it requires just a little bit of skill, but some impatient gamer just prefer to waggle aimlessly X3 (like most people bashing wii games afterall ;3).
now, a kudos especially goes to how the level design is handled. Every level is like a piece of art of traps, cliffs, enemies and dangers trying to kill you. The levels not only are challenging (getting very very very hard, on the edge of the hellish cruelness going forward in the game), but are also very creative, working to tr and impress the player, not only on the visual side but also on showing him how dangerous the levels are. Sometimes it felt kinda like watching a cartoon, not because of cinematic views but because of how well portrayed the action was.
This without counting that the challenge increases furtherly if you're ging to collect all the kong letters and the puzzle pieces. Good luck with that, it's the ultimate challenge for platform-loving gamers X3
There's also the fact that levels rarely feel similar too...kinda like in NSMB wii, but furtherly evolved, every level seem to have a main theme to always offer something new to the player beside the challenges already encountered in the past, with some levels able to even stand on their own, you'll defenitely have a lot of favorites X3
beside normal platforming levels with every kind of dangers there are also mine cart levels and barrel rocket levels. The mine cart levels are like you remember them...evil and merciless! And just think that one boss battle is on a mine cart, you'll shiver in fear >:3
The rocket-barrel levels are new to the DKC series...they always start with DK walking for a while before jumping in this rocketed barrel, wich you ignite by repeatedly pressing A. By pressing A again and again you also control the height of the barrel. There's a small handful of those levels throgh the game and they're always, always cruel and challenging, perhaps even more than mine cart levels X3
Some found it useless and frustrating, but honestly I found them fun and addicting...yes they're hard, very hard...but they're those kinds of levels where you keep saying “just one more try! I can do it!” it's the thin line between success and failure :3
it's one of the best challenging, yet very well balanced games I ever had the pleasure to play, seriously.
One last mention of the gameplay goes for the boss battles...challenging and creative, even if there's one boss kinda simlar to another one in the game, but it's also different enough with a different and harder moveset. Oh and it's such a pleasure to beat the hell out of the Tiki taks after the battles X3
Ow, about the story...not much story here, beside the small, yet cute and satisfying cutscenes before a boss battle. They'll certainly make you smile, though there IS one little even that will certainly surprise you and will reveal a little something about the DKC series. Nothing mindblowing, but still surprising. And the ending is quite satisfying and hilarious, you'll see what I mean :3
The soundtrack, for the most part is made out of old tracks remastered awesomely (you'll love how the underwater level theme has been remade :3), while the new tracks are few and far in-between...the rocket-barrel theme being one of my faves and actually making me wonder what RS will be able to do if they have more soundtrack freedom next time ^^
overall, the game is suggested o everyone, DKC fans and also platform lovers. It's a must-have indeed. Challenging, bright, colourful, charming and fun! The game also takes a while to finish on 100% Taking puzzle pieces and kong letters is hard enough and the last secret levels seem to be designed by the devil himself X3
so yeah...what can I say other than...Get it! :3

As for Donkey Kong Country Returns, I find the way you described it to be interesting. It definitely sounds like it appeals to my interests, especially because it's on the Wii.
which is too bad. i was looking forward to it.
secondly, why do we care about Gregory Edgeworth? lol. they need to make another Apollo Justice and not just dig up old characters for fanservice.
thirdly, interesting how you described DKCR. It is a bit disjointed in ways, and kind of says/repeats something that would be clear from the getgo. "Every level is like a piece of art of traps, cliffs, enemies and dangers trying to kill you", is a bit of a wanker-ish line, because its a traditional platformer, and those are aspects you expect of the game. You should mention a few of the special stages where there is like a unique one-off play style.
I contest you about the art style, its very DKC with not much of Retro adding their flair, but I don't find fault with that as they have pulled it off nicely. What is Retro's style anyway? I don't think they have anything personally distinctive.
Music is good, but generally all remixes. The jungle levels at the beginning and a few others annoyed me personally because they were the same DK theme that gets over-used, or is over-used in my opinion. Overal very nicely handled. I don't think Retro were limited to what they could do, but instead thought it wise to go down the remix route. I have no evidence to back up that statement though.
Didn't feel the Tiki Tak Tribe were that well developed. The later ones were interesting and there was a sort of 'oh, so thats why' reveletion at the Factory boss, but overal forgettable. Haven't beaten the Volcano one yet, so there could be more surprises.
Don't personally think DKCR will innovate or change the platformer genre, but it certainly excels in it. It feels like a good title, but thats all it will be. Though certainly the later levels get more interesting. Dunno if they are that hard either, its the usual make a silly mistake and you'll pay for it, or the this is your first time in the level of course you won't ace it. Though in respect to the latter, you could say it is a challenge.
