Commission Policies & FAQ

General Commission Info
About how much do commissions cost?
It really depends on the commission. My slots vary from $50-200 for a speedpainting to $400+ for a more well-rendered piece.
How will I know when you're going to be open?
I just recently moved to Boston (new job starts September 2016), so currently I'm looking to opening formally in 2017 if I can keep all my ducks in a row. This past year hasn't been conducive to working because of a gross slumlord situation that was hard to leave. :B
If you have more questions (or have an offer I can't refuse), feel free to send a note or e-mail my way! ;)
What will you draw? What are your limits?
My favorite subjects to draw are pretty much anything G/PG-rated. If your commission request falls within that category, I'll almost certainly draw it.
As for mature artwork, it really depends on the content and tastefulness of the subject. Porn is almost always a no (sorry!). As for nudity or gore/violence, it depends on what the idea ends up being, how tasteful/artistic it is, etc. If I decline, it's nothing personal... I can't do my best if I'm not comfortable —and that's that.
Of course, you could always bribe me. Haha!
I haven't seen you do things like comic pages... does that mean you won't do them?
I love new challenges, so I'd be open to a project like that. Of course, it depends on my current schedule... e-mail/note away if you have any questions. I'd probably recommend you go to an artist who specializes in that sort of thing, if you're not totally set on an artist — I'd do a good job, but it might not be as efficient as someone who already does comics all the time.
How long will my commission take to finish?
When I re-open commissions in Spring 2017, I'll have set times during the week to stream and work. In the past it's been hard to balance things, and I'm aiming to change that with some elbow grease. :D
I sometimes work out of order to make the best use of time (and to keep things fresh).
If you have any questions at all (regarding your slot, questions about commission content, etc), feel free to contact me at plescow.art@gmail.com.
Terms of Service
Payment
Starting from March 2014, I'd prefer a "pay on completion" method for anything under $200 — meaning, the commissioner pays when the painting is complete. I find this a lot less stressful and more motivating to get work done. :)
If the commission is over $200, payment plans are available (with the deposit being half the commission's total). Regardless of price, the high-resolution artwork will not be sent until the commission is paid for in full.
All Paypal payments can be made to centradragon@gmail.com after an invoice has been sent, although snailmail or check is occasionally accepted. Credit cards are accepted at conventions.
Refunds
Pay-on-completion (under $200) commission:
— If a commission is cancelled before work has begun, no payment is required.
— If cancellation occurs during or directly after after the preliminary stage (sketches, research/references, etc), 50% of the total commission price is expected to be paid.
— No cancellations are accepted once coloring or painting has started.
Commissions over $200:
— If a commission is cancelled before work has begun, a full refund can be given.
— If cancellation occurs during or directly after after the preliminary stage (sketches, research/references, etc), 50% of the total commission price can be refunded.
— No refunds are given once coloring or painting has started.
The artist retains the right to cancel and refund a commission due to rude behavior, harassment, or poor communication/English skills that hampers work getting done. Commissioners do not have permission to post sketches or WIPs of cancelled commissions in their galleries.
Copyright
The commissioner will always 100% own their character. The artist (me!) does, however, retain all reproduction rights to the images produced (including sketches or concept work), unless specified in a contract. This means I can do things such as sell prints, create merchandise, compile anthologies/books and otherwise use the artwork for profit and promotion.
Commissioners may display their commissioned work on their accounts, use them as icons, print them out (for personal, non-commercial use), etc with proper credit. Original paintings may be resold, but keep in mind only the physical painting is being sold — the artist still holds reproduction rights.
If commercial use (or the transferral of rights) is desired, a contract needs to be made and agreed upon.
Edits
For commissions under $200:
A single round of edits is permitted if an error is made — for example, if the reference clearly shows a character with stripes and the artist drew a character with spots. Posing is artist's choice, and multiple sketches are not provided for the client to choose from.
For commissions valued between $200-400:
3-4 thumbnails are provided for the client to choose from. Once a thumbnail is chosen, two rounds of small edits (or one larger one) are permitted during the painting process. Small edits include changing the color of clothing, adding or removing small elements, moving something from one area to another. A larger edit might include repainting the facial expression, changing the lighting or location, adding significant props, etc.
For commissions $400 and over:
3-4 thumbnails are provided for the client to choose from, with another round of thumbnails included if the project calls for it. Once a thumbnail is chosen, three rounds of small edits (or two larger ones) are permitted during the painting process. Small edits include changing the color of clothing, adding or removing small elements, moving something from one area to another. A larger edit might include repainting the facial expression, changing the lighting or location, adding significant props, etc.
Additional edits beyond what's included in the price are billed at $35/hr, with the minimum being one hour. The commissioner would be given a quote and asked if they wish to proceed with the additional edit(s).
The commissioner shall offer the artist first opportunity to make any edits. In layman's terms: don't go to another artist to get edits before seeing if I can do them first. ;)
I have questions/comments!
I'm available via e-mail (plescow.art[at]gmail.com). Notes are okay, but I tend to be bad about answering them quickly. ;(
Worst case I'll be floating around and looking at all the pretty things. :D I hope I can see you there! It'll be cool to see people IRL. :B
And then we can trade them like Pokemon cards. :DDD
If you could, just let me know your table number... that way I'll know for sure where to go visit~
But maybe I'll see you around at a different con/time? <3
But ähm yes... If i could teleport there, i definitely would xD
It's usually pretty simple, though! Definitely no porn or nudity, and for violence it really depends on a case-by-case basis. :) I usually stick to G/PG-rated stuff, but if the idea is interesting enough I might extend out of my comfort zone and go for it.
What will you draw? What are your limits?
My favorite subjects to draw are pretty much anything G or PG-rated. If your commission request falls within that category, I'll almost certainly draw it.
As for mature artwork, it really depends on the content and tastefulness of the subject. Porn is almost always a no (sorry!). I can't do my best if I'm not comfortable—and that's that.
I noticed in your FAQ here that you use a Eee Slate for artwork whilst travelling. Does it handle well? How big are the canvases you typically work on and at what resolution? What imaging software are you running on it? I travel a fair bit and laptops are a bit of a pain to lug around (Especially this dinosaur I have, it's about 3.5 kilos haha) Just messing around with ideas at the moment but I'd really love some feedback from somebody who's actually using this hardware often. (Rather than playing around with one at a store :D) Terribly sorry to bombard with questions, I hope you don't mind!
Did you have any questions about the Eee Slate that I could help you with (or just the ones up here)?
Right now I have a fulltime job, and my spare time is extremely precious to me... I'd most likely charge $20/hr for work once I take more commissions. C:
A badge like Tezmond's would be $50, including printing, lamination, and shipping. Commissions are closed until late August (any more and I fear having a list too staggering to attack, haha!), but if you're interested there should be slots open down the line.
Did you ever happen to get around to zipping up your brushes? I'd really be interested in playing around with them!
And yes. I love the brushes. Thank you again!
I do have a dA, though!
