Sometimes farmers just outright kill them.

Wombats, that is. :<
I'm a far throw from Australia, but most of you guys probably know how I feel about wombats. :] Unfortunately, not everyone feels the way I do. Of the three species of wombats, two are endangered. One -- the northern hairy-nosed wombat or yaminon -- is critically endangered.
There are less than 200 individuals.
Additionally, farmers often kill wombats -- there have been reports of entire warrens of southern hairy-nosed wombats being buried alive as farmers close up their exits and cave the tunnels in.
Many wombats are hit on the road. I've spoken to people who say that they've seen more wombats dead on the highway than they have alive. Sometimes the wombats that are killed have little joeys in their pouches.
Fortunately, there are some people that are willing to help. I've been searching for a good place to send donations to, and I think I've found a perfect match:
http://www.wombatrise.com
I am busy catching up on commissions right now, but I will be offering wombat toys as incentives for donation to this wombat sanctuary. They offer "sponsorships", where you can donate to a specific animal and have them send you updates on their progress.
I really *really* want to encourage everyone to send them whatever they can. So, if you'd like, I am willing to make you a plushie of whichever wombat you like for any donation over $5.
The procedure would be:
1. Choose a wombat from the gallery at this page: http://www.wombatrise.com/gallerywom.htm
2. Go here: http://www.wombatrise.com/sponsorship.htm and donate -- let them know which wombat you've chosen!
3. Send the Paypal receipt to me, along with the wombat you've chosen, and I'll make you a representation of your wombat. This way, when you get updates on your wombat, you can give your plush wombat a cuddle and know what a positive influence you've had on its life.
Thanks guys, if you have any questions just email me. <3

If I had a source of income and a paypal account I'd totally be all over this, but sadly I don't :C I hope you get many sponsors! I was looking through the site's picture gallery, and those little guys are precious <3
I thought the Australians were super on top of taking care of their native animal populations? D: That is so scary and sad, I hope it's not too late for the little buggers to make a come back.
Australians unfortunately are just as bad at Americans as far as keeping track of their native animal populations. It's especially sad in their case because there are only a few other marsupials in the world that aren't found in Australia. :<
