Breath of Fire: The Dragon Guard

Something that's been on the backburner of my mind for years; fogure hey, why not lol
The news that Capcom cancelled MegaMan Legends 3 sort of spurred on general Capcom talk with
therghu and
thewielder, which led to Breath of fire, which myself and Wielder are avid fans of.
I started with passively alluding to an idea of how a "part 6" would play out, and I ended up laying out the whole scheme while we discussed fine points on how the series had a certain feel and where some of the games excelled and failed in our differing opinions (he doesn't like Dragon Quarter, while I felt that it was different, but it was a good game and fit in an odd way). One of the points of a BoF successor is that it had to feel like a BoF, no matter what format, and even 5/DQ had some elements to tie it in, no matter how vastly different it was.
Due to time constraints and pending commissions, it'll b something passively done, and as much as I'd like it to be a fan-made game, I'd have to opt for a comic instead. So, to be started on after the current commission batch and tentatively slated for September I want to say that Breath of Fire: The Dragon Guard will be posted on its' own site as a webcomic if everything goes right! It'll be great practice for me and it's gonna be a fun project that might culminate in a couple of years' worth of work.
Passive benefit is to possibly spur Capcom into making a new BoF, if it turns out well enough (LOL AMBITIOUS)
A quick synopsis of what's going on at the start of BoF:TDG:
The Empire Kingdom of Dragnier and the Skyrule of Wyndia are locked in a decisive war to claim even more territory than their collective, wide-spread rules have already obtained. We follow the haphazard mission assigned to a handful of the elite army of Dragnier, the Dragon Guard, as they trek deep into Wyndian territories to acquire an ambiguous escort that might possibly lead them to the end of the 200-year war. Will Ryu, a callous young man with perfect swordsmanship, and a Woren warrior known as The Bane, with rivaling skill to Ryu's and unwavering faith in his adopted homeland, be able to handle what they reveal?
Few things I'll point out without giving much away is that there is a prophecy going on, most of the staples of the series is in place (Ryu, Nina, etc), and that it'll actually have a connection to and try to tie the older games together. Hopefully this'll do the series justice and with Forge and theRGHU backing me on this, I think that it's time that I did something with this idea. Maybe it might cause enough ruckus to garner attention from Capcom, get them thinking "oldschool" again lol
Either way, should be fun. Look for it in September or early October at the latest!

Forgive me, I'm just kinda rambling here. >_>
God, I need to replay BoF1 so bad now. If I could find the GBA remake somewhere...
As a big BOF fan as well, I'd like to help if I can.
...still haven't beaten the PS2 version of Shinobi for just that reason...xD
BoF4 had an interesting take on the art front. Loved the Eastern flair on everything, sort of made shit pop
Well okay, no, kidding :D But come on, this is the series that has Bo and Rand and Rei and Garr and Scias in it.
and indeed fou lu was such a badass :D
cant wait to see the new one ^^
That's what I've heard anyway. It's kind the same with Sonic. His creator already made a public statement about how crappy the sonic games have become and told the fan base to just let him die. That was made after the release of the one where he turns into a werewolf.
I really think what happened with the BoF series is just like what happens to a lot of games. It started out great, then came out later on with it, another big hit. My guess in this case is the Resident Evil series. Both games were wonderful, and 2 different game styles. But priorities led to one game having more pull over others, which sucks since BoF was always a great week's worth of gaming if you're not into getting everything. But then Resident Evil went from being survival horror to just killing bugs for a couple of hours or crappy rail shooters.
Finished them all and had a lot of fun with every single one. Except 4. I did not really like the theme of it.
DQ was different but i still liked it a lot.
I liked 3 the most. Cool characters, cool places and music and so on.
Also, *cough* CURSE YOU DESERT!!! *cough*
Elyon is awesome.
17 years ago released and I took a hold of one copy about 1,5 years later, when I was 10,5 years old and understood NOT ONE WORD of English. I've trained myself, reading the game's story over and over and helped out with my little knowledge of Latin (I had Latin as my first foreign language at school here in Germany) and loved the game so much.
It felt epic, it felt great when you saved Ryu's father and made the town fly and the Anfini Dragon, the purple one, is my most loved dragon and dragon animation till today.
When you activated his power in the last battle and he starts to collect energy it was like: OMFG *jump, goosebumps, epic, YEAH*
The other parts of the story never REALLY shackled me to the platform they were released on, but even things like the shaman system are sooo gorgeous - playing the game from time to time om Emulators.
Only Final Fantasy 7 back on the old Playstation 1 could beat BoF2, hell, I even created a whole world-adaption for Fantasy-Roleplaying to feel a bit of the Breath of Fire storyline in my life again. *laughs*
Well, just two 2cents.
Story also seems interesting. The dragons and Wyndia are enemies this time around? Or is Dragnier more like the 'Dark Dragons' from the first game? I look forward to hearing more once the comic starts.
I've never played V, but I'd say III is my favorite despite the sad ending.
Everything's there, just gotta be mapped out visually, pretty much! :)
I'm an avid fan, and I really hope this goes off without many hitches for you; genuinely very excited!
I should probably look into the series now that things are a lot more flexible.
3 I bought a bit later, and 4 and 5/DQ I bought on the release dates. I think that it's not as prominent as FF or the more mainstream JRPGs, but has a solid story to tell of its' own. 1-3 are actually a 3,000 year long continuation with 5 as an ambiguous 4th installment while 4 is a different dimension/story using the same ideals set by the older games. All Fantasy epics that get more "anime/Asian" with each installment, but in a way that's not overpowering lol
See if you can find some of the older games on WiiStore or wherever you can find a copy!
Dragon Quarter had an interesting system. But my problem with the whole thing is that the game was too linear in terms of direction. Because the game takes place in an underground setting where the entire purpose is to reach the surface and escape, there's really no exploring to be done other than finding a few hidden items. You almost never go backwards and revisit an area (except to heal and buy/sell items if you aren't strong enough to make it to the next one), especially with the fact that simply walking around raises a counter that can give you a game over if it maxes out!
On the other hand, look at other BoF games, or really, just the majority of RPG's from that era. You get the ability to warp to other towns with a spell, the storyline revisits old areas, and so forth. And there's a lot of freedom to explore areas that the story doesn't directly point you to. Dragon Quarter had almost none of that.
Of course, I don't own a PS3, so it's likely that I won't soon be playing any future installments either unless they also release it for the Wii.
Rumor has it that'll they'll announce a new version of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at Comi-Con later this week.
Seriously, the only 3 series they care about any more are Marvel vs. Whatever, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter. And maybe, MAYBE squeezing out as much money from the Dead Rising series as they can before they eventually ditch it, too.
