As a gorgeous example of a pure-blood sheppy, Duke here is about as friendly as the breed comes. He's a big bundle of love with a heart of gold. He's very social, and lives with me on campus. He's a cuddler, a personal trainer, and probably the single largest reason as to why i haven't lost my sanity.
He's 107 pounds, and pretty massive. Small children may be tempted to ride him like a pony. He was the runt of the litter, and i got him for free. If you ever here "Oh, (s)he's just the runt, they'll be small and easy to handle." -DO NOT LISTEN- At about 4 months his paws were the size of my fists, and i had a nice chat with the friends who convinced me he'd be little... Though he still thinks he's little.
As for temperament, Duke couldn't be more socially adjusted to college life. He loves saying hi to random people, and whenever i go running with him, it seems to turn into a meet and greet rather than a chance for both of us to get exercise. We generally "run" 2 miles a day anyways.
Some amusing habits include: When playing fetch with a stick, the stick you throw is not always the stick he returns with. He seems to think "Bigger is better" He's returned with branches as thick as my wrist, and at least 12 feet long.
When he wants a bellyrub (such as in the picture shown) He rolls onto his back and makes a sad sigh. He's an attention whore, and knows you'll feel guilty if you don't give him a little.
I doubt he'll win... but hey! there's other months for more stories XD
Meet Shelby. My little 81 pound German Shepherd.
Shelby is a 7 year old rescue from a local vet. She came to me under unusual circumstances, but I was more than happy to step up and take ownership of this amazing female shepherd, who snores, grunts, complains, and kicks me off the bed at night so she can sprawl out.
Several months ago, early in the morning, after staying up until 6AM the previous night, my room mates phone explodes about 8AM, and I mean EXPLODES, it won't stop going off, and he finally wakes up and answers it, and it turns out that it is a friend of his from where he works, who does voultneer work for a local vets office. He talks to his friend, and then comes barging in to my room demanding I wake up, and we need to leave that instant. I growl and roll over and growl, telling him he can do do all sorts of colorful things to him self, since I had a whole 2 hours of lousy sleep. He tells me "DO YOU WANT A GERMAN SHEPHERD??? WE HAVE TO LEAVE RIGHT NOW, THIS INSTANT" and told me the circumstances. He didn't need to tell me another word, I flew out of bed and was running out the door with my pants hardly on, and I didn't even bother to ware shores.
Me and my room mate both flopped in to my trusty blue Saturn and I took off down the road leaving a thick blue cloud of smoke behind me as I whaled on the car harder than ever. There was not really a moment where I had the car with in reasonable legal speed limits; flooring it from every single stop sign, pretending yellow lights means GO FASTER. I was driving it like I stole it, and I didn't care, I was going to get there even if that saturn had to grow wings and fly. I could not even stomach the thought of a perfectly good shepherd being put down for no real clear reason! Car and road laws be damned, I WAS ON A MISSION!!
We ended up getting a little lost in Wonder Lake, Illinois, but with lots of tire screeching, passing, and overly insane driving, we arrived at the vet, and met up with his friend. We had arrived before Shelby's owner, and her did. We were told by my room mates friend, that Shelby was there to be put down that day. That the owner "could no longer care for her" and that "no one wanted to adopt her because shes 7".
Finally the owner arrived, my room mates friend talked to her out in the parking lot, and pointed to us, and that owner had a a look of sheer delight. She came in, and we met her, and Shelby. both me and my room mate were jaw dropped at just how pretty and happy shelby was. There was not a single thing wrong with her, not one little flaw. She was beautiful from nose to tail. We kept going back and forth, not believing that this dog was going home with us, she was just too amazing, but she was about to be passed on to us. We did some paper work, talked to the owner and got an idea of her history, then he leash was passed to us, and we headed out.
Went outside, got all Shelby's doggy belongings from the owners car, piled them in mine along with Shelby, and headed home. Shelby has turned out to be the most loving and amazing dog I have ever owned in my life. She is great with kids, great with people all around and with lots of trial and error, we have been able to discover that she is highly trained, and obeys commands she knows with out a single second of hesitation. It has been a lot of up and down with her, helping her adjust. The one thing that always stands true, are two magic words and her day is made... "Car ride" and it's hi-ho silver! I have never had a dog that loves being in the car more than Shelby. She is my traveling buddy, we go everywhere together. In with her belongings was her story, a little green folder with paper work dating back to when Shelby was born and adopted by her first owner in Sierra Vista, Arizona, then it told of her travels with her military owner all around the US, then finally to here, where she became mine.
I am sure I have dragged this on a lot, but none of it was made up. That was the most interesting day of my life when I went to go save her. To this very day, we don't know the true reason for the previous owners decision to get rid of such an amazing shepherd. We have speculated many things, but we do not know the true story, and at this point we no longer care, she is ours now, and she is simply amazing
This is Danni. She came into the rescue centre I volunteer at a few years ago after her owners split up and neither could keep her. She had a real bad hip-score, was very underweight and the vet was afraid she may not be overly healthy. Being the shepherd lover I am, I decided to take her on as my responsibility while she was with us. The first day she was with us we made an extremely close bond, almost as if she'd been with me forever already.
I'd walk her every day, spend all my spare time in the kennel with her or out in the field letting her run around. I even skipped college just to go and see her. She never caused me any problems, was very obedient, loved playing with other dogs and very loyal toward me.
After about three months of her being with us, she was taken home by a couple who lived not too far from me, so naturally I'd go and see her when I could and check up on her. About two months later, the couple come into the centre with her to say hello and were thinking of rehoming another shepherd so she had a play buddy. They did so and went back home with them, and that was the last I saw of her for another two months.
They come back one day, unexpectedly with just her. Saying that she had been playing up and not behaving properly with the other dog and that they wanted to bring her back for rehoming. I of course gave them a piece of my mind and said I'd take her home.... So i did.
She's my little "Fag-Hag" and I love her dearly. Still causes me no grief, gets on with everybody she meets and is just amazingly loving and all-around great :P
Here is a link of us together in the news paper: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6350797/ I have owned german shepherd my whole life.

I have a lot of photos of her in my gallery also
About Her: Berlynn is a very sweet dog. I found her last year in July in my yard on a rainy day. She was 40lbs and covered in mud. Even though my mom said not to bring her in, my animal loving instincts told me I had to. I brought her in and washed her then gave her what she thought at the moment was the best meal in her life. My mom finally gave in on letting me keep her. Since then I have taken her into a dog obedience class. We placed second and are ready to further our education and have her become a therapy dog. She also has gained 10 pounds. She loves people and dogs. When we have a litter of puppies from my moms pug or Boston terrier, she always is very gentle and afraid to squish them. She will lay on the ground and let the puppies roll all over her.
Here is a photo of my father-in-laws G-Shep, Andy. I bought him for his birthday back in last July, he is a very sweet and loving dog, he couldn't hurt a fly if he wanted to. He loves his green ball, it's all he thinks about, other than plotting revenge on the new Wolf/Husky my father-in-law just got, that puppy just shoves Andy around, and Andy just acts all sweet to him. He loves the water and he will stock his entire head under the water to chase little fish in the river we go to once a month.
