Hey, what kinda classes are you taking? ...also, where are you planning on going with your education? Just curious.

I'm currently studying illustration, specializing in technical (blueprints, graphic design, typography, machinery, etc) and I do most of this sort of stuff on my own time. It's basically just to supplement what I'm currently not learning.

I suppose I was originally planning to go for concept art, though I'm not sure how feasible that plan is so I dab around in other stuff like matte painting and graphic design as well. I suppose what I really wanted to do was to be a freelance illustrator for novel covers, magazines, card games, that kind of stuff - scifi/fantasy genre mostly.

I need to get my act together though and start working on a serious portfolio and website :p school alone won't get me where I want to be.

Conceptart.org supports artists of all types, especially illustrators. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Brom but... http://www.bromart.com/ he's this real sweet illustrator who's started doing his own book. He gave a presentation on the 2nd day of the workshop. Also, keep truckin' man. Sounds like you've got a good plan, you could pursue any one of those careers with your skills.

Actually you're more than right, school isn't exactly what's going to get you a job. Portfolios are where it's at. One of the things they said a lot during the workshop was that "Your portfolio is only as strong as your weakest piece of art" ...good rule of thumb to remember when putting together a portfolio.

hah yeah I know Brom - I've got his "offerings" book which I look through for inspiration and reference now and then. I wasn't as fond of his other books (devil's rose/plucker), but I'm hoping that he comes out with another collection of random scifi/fantasy illustrations soon.
