$1500 is cheap actually for data recovery. I've seen it much higher.

have you tried using something like HDDRegen and run that for a few days to see if there's any bad sectors that it can regenerate?

do a chkdsk first to see if it's even alive....

I've had to do things like this myself through programs like GetDataBack. Usually the stuff comes out fine. But for some reason I've had horrible times where chunks of songs were blended with chunks of other songs to create horrible Chimaera that should never have seen the light of day.

So $1500, while expensive, is probably the best route to go to make absolutely certain you get back the most data possible.

Awww MAN! That happened to me too, TWICE! On external HD with 500GB, another with 1TB. I was guttered. I hate external HDs by now, and while the smaller one might be salvageable, the 1TB one with all my old photos and everything is just gone. *cries*

And the price of using a clean room is just outrageous.

I guess what I'm saying is that I feel your pain. It really SUCKS. They need to speed up the development of those giant USB-sticks. Then I'll stick to those.

thats the reason i only use Internal HDDs, i never had a failure in the last... 25 years...

With external i had 2 in 1 year...

Thats actually pretty cheap. DriveSavers used to charge around that just to recover JPEG files. Hope you get everything recovered. For future use, I would recommend Drobo or some redundant system.

One probable reason the cost of service is as high as it is might be due, in part, to the technician (possibly) having to open the drive in a secure, dust and static free environment. TRansfer the EHD to a different device, one at a time, to attempt to salvage what data is left. I don't know. Best guess, here.

Also, I do certainly hope that this has prompted to you switch from volatile, magnetic media to a more stable, solid-state drive. Fits in a PCI Slot, and if you drop your computer (Or it falls over), there's no scratch marks on the disc that could be made and ruin your data. However. Leave your computer unplugged with no battery power for about a year or two, and you might begin to lose data.

Seriously. Look into Solid State Drive technology. It's SO much better! :D
