WebComic : Dragons at Work.
Thanks for taking some interest in my art, and hopefully my possible idea in a webcomic. Im about to post a submission of a comic strip, but i will link to that by commenting on this journal, as i plan to finish the journal before submitting the image.
This is not the first time ive amused myself with the idea of creating a webcomic. My first venture was dubbed the tablet comic, and its entire purpose was for me to practice drawing on my tablet. I liked it and it was fun practice, but overall somwhat annoying and ugly.
Lately ive been musing on the idea of creating a new comic. But im far to lazy to keep up a proper schedule, specially with the degree of art traditionally required to do a multi paneled comic.
Then, one day, it sort of hit me while i was doodling on the border of an application a customer only half filled out. Basically, i do draw often... just not pictures. I often times find myself doodling little dragon heads. Because of this, drawing dragon faces in my little style has become second nature and is the thing my hand likes to do in its free time.
Thus i started coming up with ideas for it. Ive written scripts for somewhat about 30 strips. Unfortunately, a lot of it is just rambling and mostly focuses on explaining what the comic is. Which, TBH is not a good way to start a comic. But its a way i plan to do it none the less even if that method is overused and overall sucks.
Anyways, the comic is basically cute little dragon heads having conversations... doing things... Yah not really much to do when your focusing on everything above the neck. But i planned to work with the body if the strip required it.
At first i thought of calling the comic something like "Cute little dragon heads".... yah it sucks and no one will like it. Today, while at work, seeing as i mostly work on this comic while at work, i came up with the idea of "Dragons At Work."
As for the story?.... Well, i planned no story. The comic is more to come off as a graphic journal. What the comic is about is whatever i feel like drawing that day. There is no real plans for a plot, char development, or any real story. its just another way of me expressing my opinions without the use of rambling forever in this journal.
Of course none of this really matters if it all just stays an idea and never gets on paper.
The thing is, i have actually drawn about 4-5 of these comics already. Also, as ive said, ive written the scripts of a possible 25 more.
The problem is that im still on the fence on how im going to make this comic. At first, the idea was that the comic would be comprised of dragon heads i randomly draw on paper, and put into the comic through scanning and dragging them. Basically, the '5' comics ive drawn is actually one rather large sheet of paper with like 20-30 little dragon heads drawn on it. I drew them with my ink pen, so if i ever messed up, i marked it out, and moved to the space next to it. I planned to scan it, and then drag the heads to their pannels and add in the chat bubbles.
I even eventually planned to color the comic regularly with markers. I thought this would add a nice look to the comic and would even set it apart from others.
But im hardly ever not at a computer, and i do need to practice using it. not to mention, the comic i just drew in flash actually looks pretty good. The thought of doing it entirelly in flash has always been on my mind, and it seems more and more likely that i will draw it that way.
But none of you guys really care about that. So, the point of this little tid bit of a journal. i would like to hear your ideas.
Is a comic that focuses on just the heads of dragons like the comic ive posted a good idea or would it thoroughly suck?
Is a comic that has no story and is entirely about whatever i feel like talking about hat day a bad idea?
Does a comic drawn by ink pen and colored with markers interest you more than a comic drawn and colored in flash?
Does the name for the comic totally suck?
Should i come up with a story for the comic?
Considering the comic ive posted and any knowledge of my personality and artistic talent, is it a comic you would enjoy, or just another crappy comic that you may look at and then forget?
Dang, i jumped all over the place in this journal. oh well, i would just like to hear yalls feedback. I will be scanning and uploading the first of the hand drawn ones tonight. For now, check the first comment to this journal for a link to the comic drawn in flash.

The coloring in the "test" comic works great. Very vibrant and well-done. How that compares to marker work would depend on how good the marker work is. Overall, though, the media type is less important than the quality of the art, and the dialogue/events are probably more important than that.
I suppose there is value in setting it appart from others in such a way, of course. There are pretty few web comics that do marker-colored work.
The name works well :>
As for story... It can work well without a story. Adding an actual story line can do one of two things; it can make people more interested in the comic, as there's something to look forward to in the future (And as a result, people tend to overlook the -occassional- poor strip more than they might for a less story-lined comic), or it can make people bored of the story even if the individual comics are decent (I know I've lost interest in a few comics because of this... Not a -lot-, but some). At first I was going to say that story-line comics tend to be better, until I realized that while I can think of several good comics with long-spanning plots, such as Sluggy Freelance, the good non-plotted examples I can think of are The Far Side and most of Calvin & Hobbes. C&H kinda blends the two actually, I guess, as it has many unrelated strips, as well as stories taking up anywhere from a couple strips to a few dozen.
And yeah, if you start making this, I'm watching. Cute brightly-colored dragon already caught my attention :>
