That project is now on hold, but i didn't forget about it :}
After nine days of development hopefully I can share some news about my current project! xD
Hello there and im really glad to write something after being completely off-line for some time!
I was digging into Unreal Development Kit ( UDK ) and didn't even have a chat with someone ( only lonely diggy-diggy xD ).
Many have asked me about start doing 3d models for commissions and i was like "Great, good point, I'll start it some day!" but another part of me was thinkig "And what? Make a 3d model to show it on regular 2d picture? What is the reason of that if you can just paint everything... Boring".
I could just make models and give them away in format that almost no one can open because they need maya, 3dsmax, or zbrush licenses. That wouldn't be fun at all, ofcourse they can play with the model, position it an render as they want. But that is not user friendly! You need some experience to use the special programs, you need to learn first. Not everyone just have time and patience to do this. So I started to think about how to present actual 3D easy and fun way, for people.
The idea of animations came immediately. But after some planning about this my soul just yelled "OH SO MUCH WORK :O". Yes, indeed. Draw concept, plan shots, model, texture, setup, render, add post effects, compose (and that is not even a full list of things to do in the pipeline). I just can't make that especially if i want quality that would satisfy me. So i abandoned that idea.
Second, I thought about making turntables. Tried to make one, It took long time to setup and render (though I was rendering in crappy quality). I didn't enjoy it at all, and the perspective of compositing video made it even worse.
Then I tried those 360 panoramas. The idea is good though, it is somehow interactive and fun... but really, i still didn't enjoy the pipeline. And the the applicable subject was very narrow (360 panoramas are good for presenting something inner maw shots, but not other stuff). I definitely needed more.
Now about the project! (The most important part)
It is an idea of a program that allows you to view good quality next generation 3d models of characters (or anything you can put there), spin the camera around, play with them, even position them as you want (remember garrysmod? xD ). Everything interactive, everything is real-time thanks to UDK powered by Unreal Engine 3.
Yep, the same engine that is used for blockbuster games nowadays like Mass Effect 3 (Yay for my most awaited one xD ), Batman: Arkham City, Gears of wars 3, Borderlands, Bulletstorm, BioShock 2... and many other titles, including very fun casual ones: Dungeon Defenders, The Ball, etc...
The most exciting that this engine is completely free to use, you can go to their site and download the UDK and start building what you want!
Some of the key (or goal) features I'm going forward to:
Easy to use. You just start it, load the model of your character and it is here! Now you can spin it around, look at from different angles, interact with it.
Easy for artists. They can take commissions to make character models for you! It is really easy to export stuff into UDK.
Very flexible. You can use it for viewing your character. But for example who would stop you using your camera to fly inside your character's gizzards? Hehe, any topic and kink you want is possible to demonstrate.
Does it mean porn-friendly? HELL YEAH! If you want +18 stuff ofcourse... but im sure we all do ^^
Ok I think you got the point!
Now... how am I going to put this all together?
Well, obviously there is alot of work and alot of learning for me. And you know, that's so good and interesting! Can't wait to do more!
I've already blocked off some basic functionality of it. It has a camera that you can fly and spin around, you can load static models on runtime. I've made a simple placeholder for the user interface using Flash and Scaleform GFX. Also some temporary assets. You can check the screenshots:

and additional ones:

Though it would be great if i had some help with it. It is always more fun to work together, listening to the community feedback.
If you're interested in the project, i would much appreciate if you could contribute ~something~ to the project.
"Something" includes:
+ Level designers, those who can use Unreal Editor.
+ 3d artists, ofcourse. No description needed xD
+ Unreal Script programmers (UScript is easy to learn I think. Especially for those who have C/C++/Java background.).
+ Those who know Adobe Flash (AS2 or AS3, both are supported) to build interfaces.
+ Concept artists... ALWAYS required! Because art tends to inspire for new ideas! There is alot of things to design, think of backgrounds, landscapes, maps, different ways to display models or anything you'd like to introduce here.
+ Sound art and music soundtrack. If you're a musician and feeling like to make something, you are very welcome!
+ Story writers. Why not? I'm not sure about any story going on here (it is still not a game). But who knows how far we can come. And you can always make beautiful descriptions of various things. Just like designers, just written way!
Im sure that is not a complete list! You could even help with filling this list! Seriously! You could help with sharing a link to this journal with your friends!
So if you have any ideas, suggestions, things to discuss or comments - please, write them here, send IMs or whatever, I'm always happy to talk ^^.
Last thing to point out: this project will be completely free to use, community driven, and open source. I have no plans of selling it what so ever. Even though, Epic Games licence allow that for some point.
Though I will be taking 3d commissions and display them that way. But that is more like personal work, not related to the program.
I'll be going and developing everything I have to. If I stuck somewhere I'll learn first and then continue. That is a part of enjoyment, yeah! This might be slow, though I'm always happy for some help to speed the process up :} . Anyway, "slow" is still better than staying at the "idea" stage, right?
And now I have a public question. What do you think how should we name this program? I have an idea in mind to call it "Dragon Viewer" (feeling proudly patriotic for this one). But maybe you have a better suggestion!
And happy valentines day :}

Also, Dragon Viewer sounds good to me XP
Yeah, easiness is a goal. I'd like to make user feel comfortable like... he is just playing a game :}
I don't think that naming the program like that is a good idea though, i hope there will be lots of different people somehow working on it, improving it... somewhere in the future.
Very nice idea though, and "Dragon Viewer" fits as any other name anyone can probably think of. :3
Im working to make an alpha release, hope it will be soon ^^. I'm also going to include all the source to download.
But for now, if you're interested, you can go to UDK site and download the latest version (January 2012 udk beta)!
I personally am a fan of the name "Dragon Viewer", and can't really think of another suitable one. I might be up for contributing on the story side of things, too - whatever's needed on that front.
I'll think more about stories (what topic suits better for it) as soon as a get closer to alpha release!
If you can take photos of various interesting things, shapes, architecture elements, textures, sky views, animals, trees... and lots of other stuff... it makes your work priceless for the artists ^^.
Here, look at this site http://cgtextures.com/ . I don't know what would I do without these assets...
Great work :}
Thank you, I am honored }:=)
But nah, Im not going to do that... ever...! I really don't like that game...
The most lazy development company ever. That what made me dislike that game - the developers.
And that is not everything I have against them! I just don't want to be a hater :}
The game itself is good. It has an interesting community, lots of amazing player-made stuff. But Linden behavior just pisses me off.
Im not sure though how to port an unreal engine 3 compatible model to SL. xD It doesnt even support normalmaps for texturing and non-human skeleton.
