For my second installment on the women of metal, we have a two-for-one. First up is Cristina Scabbia, co-vocalist (alongside Andrea Ferro) for the Gothic Metal band, Lacuna Coil. Scabbia is a pleasant contralto, whose smooth lyrical style is often juxtaposed against Ferro's harsher thrash in a manner similar to that of Evanescence.
Interestingly, it would appear that one is not copying the other, as they appear at similar times on opposite sides of the Atlantic. And both really hit it big around the same time, too, so it really does seem to be a case of convergent evolution.
Which brings us to number two. Most people categorize Evanescence as Rock instead of Metal, but the two do have a lot of overlap in the softer metal/harder rock areas. Me, I prefer to think of them both as just simply... awesome. So, without further ado, I give you the beautiful mezzo-soprano vocals of Amy Lee. (And let us sigh at the contrast in subtlety between the lyrics and the video clip of "My Immortal".)

Shame what happened to Evanescence after The Open Door came out, I just found out about the new album they just released but haven't heard any of their new music yet. Have you heard any of We Are The Fallen's stuff? (Ben Moody's new band, fronted by Carly Smithson from American Idol.)
By far my fav new group so far for the 2010s: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL8T.....B6D6AD91C[/yt] Going stir crazy for the new album that was suppose to be out three months ago
