This whole issue is why I generally wait until someone else buys and I can try it out, or talk to several people who aren't trying to sell me something before I buy games. I mean sometimes I do buy games before trying them, but they usually end up being cheaper indy games like Terraria, meaning I seldom listen to a damn thing an advert or review says because of the marketing situation. Only thing I see as correct are NON in game bonuses for preodres and such, I love figurines and posters and stuff. In game content is a bit of a raw deal in my opinion, and Arkham City is so far the worst offender on this front. So my brother buys the game and tells me I'd love it, but I can't play through story integrated portions because they sell a one time code in the box? This shit is killing gaming for me, and I'll go back to roleplaying on home made systems for entertainment when this shit becomes the norm.
Not to mention games like Phantasy Star online. Resale of the game without the online code is very very illegal, since you know the code IS the game in a way. I mean what is an online game without the online component?
I understand developers making one time codes is the source of the problem but if you sell something illegal, it is also your problem. Its a licensing thing. Another problem they have (and Best Buy is much worse for this) is the high pressure sale. I have seen people with no clue what they are shopping for force fed as much jargon as the employee could in order to get them to spend extra on things they didn't need. This is worse on people with young children from what I have seen. Buying anything with a brand associated with it. AND as their employees' jobs are on the line the smile and keep slinging as many crap sandwiches as they can in order to keep being employed. Though occasionally you do get an employee that has the heart to actually help someone, like instead of slinging them the usual liscenced stuff based on cartoons or games, they will actually find a game that is age appropriate and fun. Most people now days don't know you can try used games in store on their demo stations, and last I checked this was still possible. I just see videogaming coming up on another "Atari crash" if they don't straighten up in the next couple of years.
I dont see how selling a game with a one time code is illegal... if you buy it used, then thats inda your problem. The person who returned it woul also be breaking the law.
The online activation code is what I was talking about, sorry for being unclear. If you read the terms of service there is a line in there about not intended for resale and not being a complete product. I only know because of a roomate I had that managed a game store getting the email saying they couldn't buy in or sell any current used copies.
I still say the fault falls onto the consumer and the game company for making the one time code :< The game store is just the middle man.
Hell, im pissed at the new idea that they have of making online codes for all new games so that if you buy a used product then you have to pay them money to get the online code --" Im looking at you saints row 3. They make more than enough money off of thier games, its not like used games are hurting them for cash. Its an insult to the gamers and the economy.
really? cause i find them the exact opposite. i cant remember the last time they gave a game lower than a 7 in their review videos. i actually just watched the ME3 review on their site and wasnt surprised at all by the final rating, but rather that he said things like "facial acting is great" when lipsync looked awful, dead faces, popping, etc. and just kind of excused all the bad things with things that were "polished" as he put it.
just my 2 cents anyway, i havent found an honest game reviewer yet. Yahtzee maybe.
Eh, I haven't cared about "professional reviews" from NES to today. Not that I think their getting paid to give good reviews is justified. After that Kane & Lynch fiasco with the guy getting fired, I laughed so hard at gaming reviews and haven't even considered them professional since.
Yahtzee will forever be the best unbiased reviewer in my opinion, even to the put of pointing out EVE being advertised on the website he reviews for and calling it a challenge

Lets just go back to the day where we bought things we'd thought we'd like based on our own perceptions of the product, or by word of mouth from those you personally know. Even if we made a mistake, oh fucking well, we got over it. Granted this is harder to do with more expensive purchases, in that case do your research carefully and with a bullshit detector on hand.
I never really cared for professional reviews on generl most anything for multiple reasons, the being bought out prolly why some of my disliokes for them come up.
but really relying ot profesional reviews is very meh
A must see movie, along with Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond.
TIA

RRRRGHHH... You've beaten this dead horse ONE TOO MANY TIMES, you...
....... Oh. This is about video games in general, not Mass Effect 3 again.
*puts bat away*
Yeah, paid reviews.... I always knew Gamespot was doing that. :\

But as for a recent negative review, they tore Amy a new asshole.
