April Fools! "The Experiment of Apathy"
For all who fell for my prank journal "Doing Free Art Requests" http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3320397/ , jokes on you. You've been pranked. For those who missed it or were wary, what this joke was, and then what eventually turned into an unexpected social experiment was that I had art block, and was advertising for "free requests" as a way to help me get over it. Some of the things I did mention were truths, including the more longer yarns I wove to people who were a bit questioning. On the other hand, I am still taking commissions to deal with my various financial needs, and the only art block I have is that I don't have as much time I'd like to, to devote to my own work. That is all there.
Now this journal became a very unwitting, yet shocking experiment. I ran it side-by-side on both deviantArt and Fur Affinity. I had set aside rules, put forth a mannerism of humility, and a need for help with my block. The numbers were telling.
Way more people, especially complete strangers applied on Fur Affinity. Only 1 person on Fur Affinity knew immediately it was a prank (and kudos to him for knowing because of my change in mannerism). 5 people on dA got that it was a prank. One girl especially really played along with me on it because she knew me that well. A few people I managed to convince out of their doubt. The rest of this came down to a matter of manners and personality, and the reality being that most people do "Free Requests" for those they care about and won't take them for a ride. Here, I am true to my promises of always offering requests, as I always have, to those who show they care about me, my work, and don't abuse my kindness. A lot of people abused my kindness, and definitely are not friends or puts into question about those friendships. I offer commissions, and still offer commissions as an act of financial trust. With it, a person becomes my client, someone who has a vested financial interest in me, and in turn, that said active interest I validate with timely and efficient work, of great quality.
Those of you who want to know why you are (you will be contacted individually) or are not getting your requests, here are the examples of those who get them.
Of the roughly 75 people that applied, only 1 person, that was it, actually expressed immediately his sympathies for my apparent art block, and didn't even care about the free art! Over 75 people were more focused on the idea of free art, then being actively invested in the idea of the struggling artist. If I was any other artist who was doing free art giveaways and expressed a reason why, I would want people to know they cared more about me than what they get out of it. No one showed that at the onset. So to that one, single person, he will get his request, in my speed paint style. Thank you for being a human being with empathy. I am aware that there were others who did show some concern, but generally few mentioned about helping or solving the art block at all.
This was even more startling. Only 3 people, of 75, said "Please". Seriously. Just 3 people actually used that word. Two of you (one qualifies for the last category), will get your requests in a sketch format. Thank you for using your manners. Obviously in this day and age, people have forgotten common courtesy.
There were actually people who, in their asking for their requests did not look at my gallery, knew what I drew, and some even had the audacity to chew me out when I asked a question. Most didn't even read the Journal, just the title. Then there were some, who when they communicated to me, knew exactly what was in my gallery, what I was like, and what I wanted to see. These were people who understood the need for challenge, or to give me things that would absolutely make me smile. And to the several people who showed their love, you will all get some colored work.
Of my experiments, none have disappointed me more than this one. Apparently as it goes, if people see things on sale, or for free, whether it be an item in a store, or a person's time, they will jump on it. A person who is offering their valuable free time is either a person who wants to give their friends little things to treasure, or is genuinely out to make the world happy (and after this experiment, the latter has to be very rare). Of course, it does seem cruel to use a prank of promises for free art and lead people on, indeed wasting your time; but really, why is everyone being rejected? It's a simple concept of that when people do things for others they give part of themselves to a project. No artist, ever, would want to put their heart and soul into something, for someone who can't show them respect. I hope that of those who did not get what you asked for, that you use this experience to forge better experiences with your fellow artists. If anyone were to come to me as a friend or a client, then to you I offer my respect. Hopefully in the future everyone can show more exemplary behavior, and be someone any artist would love to work with. Thank you all for your participation.

I'm just saying, just because a response didn't include an explicit mention of sympathy, doesn't mean that the poster didn't sympathize. In short, your experiment has it's flaws because of some base assumptions, but only 1 mention of sympathies out of 75 is still indicative of egocentric interests, rather than genuine hope of aiding a talented artist.
There are some who made light references to the block, who paid attention and who are likely more socially aware people. It's not like everyone is egocentric, but guaranteed with reading through the responses, there are some who definitely are. There is no way to judge that completely here. I didn't expect it, and didn't design to test for it.

I'll continue to produce work as long as people don't mind me posting it. Thank you for playing along with such grace.
I really should refresh my imagination and give you something pleasant to draw for a change.
joo are just a genius for doing it, i actually salute you XDDDD even though i feel liek a damn fool >.>
The only real fools are people who can't laugh it off. Thank you for playing and having a good sense of humor.
Welcome Serious people really need to loosen up, need to stop gettin thar undies in knots XDDD having a good laugh really makes the world go round :'D
Best of luck to you too with your commissions
still the prank proves it: artists on FA don't do art for the sake of a good idea - it's all about money
I pretty much jump at any journal with free art or competitions in them most times, though I do remember to ask if the person drawing is ok with a certain idea beforehand and thank them even if the idea dosen't suit them, and I like providing ideas that may help someones block. I'm not one to say "Oi! Gimmie a pic of such and such kthnx bye" or something like that, knowing the time and effort that goes into a lot of artists pics that would be just plain rood.
There were people who sadly did that though, but it seems that indeed people are kind of jumpy for free things. Since you're of that mentality, what is it exactly that makes people go sort of nuts?
However, I would like to say that when I -do- apply for freebie art, I typically do share it with my friends (to gain the artist more watchers) and check the artists gallery first to make sure I know what to expect and/or what I am asking for. I try to make my comment a conversation and not just toss refs up (unless said artist specifically requested only refs/forms be posted in comments) and I also make sure to say please and/or thank you - and I never get upset if my request is not accepted. They draw what they are comfortable with.
I also can say I just avoided commenting on journals yesterday period. I dislike April Fool's, and I find tricking other people and/or those you care about in poor taste in general. No this isn't a new idea to me I have had a distaste for april fools since I can remember. I feel as if using a holiday as an "excuse" to pull pranks on people is just an unpleasant thing overall. I apologize if this puts me in a group of "serious" or "boring" people or if this makes it seem as if I "can't take a joke" but I merely feel this way, and cannot change the way I feel about it, not that I care to.
I also found myself annoyed with the amount of "free requests...lol april fools" journals I saw yesterday. Though I do not participate in them, I do try to read as many of my watchlist's journals as possible. Most of these journals were quite obvious tricks, and I felt like "O well, if they fell for it, it's their loss." However, I also feel a twinge of dissatisfaction. Why? Because I know if I was watching an artist I really truly admired, an artist I never thought I would be able to commission, and they decided to post offering some freebies (especially for something like getting through art block ect) I may not think about the date (especially since I mostly try to ignore the day) and may rush ahead with some idea I feel like they might enjoy, or a reference of a character I have always wished to see in their style. And if I was then told "Welp, you should feel like a loser, it was a prank", I know I would probably be upset, offended, and very sad. (And yes, there was one journal where the artist pulling the prank actually did basically call someone a loser -- obviously not this one.) Of course, this does not excuse absences of "Please" and lack of sympathy for your situation.
The reason I almost commented on your journal is because I have felt art blocked before, and I did open requests for it. Now, personally, I am glad I didn't - even if I know I would have said please and expressed an understanding for your pain, I would have ended up feeling unsettled, because I would have felt a shared bond of an experience that would have turned out to be false.
For what it is worth, I suppose I understand the social experiment, though I do not understand understand the need to pull a prank that led to the eventual experiment. I for one watch you because you draw pokemon and because I love the way your style seems to blend a mixture of anime and realism in the perfect amounts. And yes, I did have a few ideas for what I would have asked. So while I do not necessarily approve of your "experiment" I can kind of understand the grounds behind it and I still continue to have an admiration for your work. Please understand that this post is not really to "scold" you or make you feel bad, merely to explain my feelings and perhaps allow a window into the way another could feel about this. I know my own social experiment if you will played out yesterday, as it does every year - seeing how many and what kind of people will participate in this day that masquerades as a holiday. The results were actually less disappointing then usual, as most of my friends chose to abstain thankfully.
I am happy you enjoyed(?) your holiday and your experiment. And I am happy that you are not really experiencing art block - because it can truly be a pain.
The prank was designed simply as a prank born out of my husband's mind actually. He likes to prank, and I like to humor him, and definitely had the means to do it. I twisted it a bit into a social experiment once two of the non-pranked individuals pointed out the lack of pleases, and the levels of apathy. Honestly, some of these things just make themselves. I can guarantee some people will definitely be disappointed in the end, which is not something I can explain away. It's just how it goes. Hopefully some will have a good sense of humor, and others will be humbled, since in the end, those that did say "please", asked me how I was feeling, or chatted me up about my characters as they did on deviantArt will get what they asked for. But on April 1st, as you noted, most don't even do that.
Though I am glad you don't really have an art block, and with some comfort I did browse your gallery before hand. Guess I don't know ya as well as I should.
I'm glad I didn't have art block either. If this was legitimate then I probably would have been quite upset, so relieved it wasn't.
Thank you for playing along in the end.
(Never liked that holiday to begin with) :P
Never even occurred to me for a SECOND it might be an April Fools joke! LOL.
Maybe "Master" is just getting a little old? No?
And no, I'm not going senile. I've always been this way. :p
oh well, at least I tried to offer something in exchange out of gratitude haha
back to saving for that commish (and fix my paypal)
A couple people offered trades. It wasn't a lot, but it was some. I'm not the trade type though, so not something I particularly considered in the cluster of comments, though I'm sure for a lot of artists, that would sound mighty appealing.
I do not celebrate April Fools, I do not tolerate jokes on that day.
Wish you good tidings with your ventures, but you have lost one potential customer.
I fish for freebies because I have no other choice. All my money is spent on bills so I can return to school.
I did try to spread you around, now I have to apologize to the people I sent your page to and tell them you are not worth dealing with. I try to save a little on the side so I can buy something in the future and I'm close to one of my goals. As for watch, I was going to cause I do like your style, but after this, no.
"My Character Xander: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/6248215/
And Jason Werefox: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5211272/
Jason laying face up with his arms tied behind his back and his legs up in the air with Xander thrusting into his rear.
Jason is larger than Xander (Height, size, and muscle wise) and Xander's body is fairly average, not too muscular and not fat."
is a bit abusive. Most people had the decency to ask, rather than just. So hopefully in the future, given that you are short on cash, anyone you do make requests to, you'll be kinder to.
Also posting a note? You freely share confidential information too? That is very nice to know.
If you mean My favorites, I have maybe 5 requests, everything else was a Raffle/Contest/Kiriban win. Most of it is over half a year old. Requests were also from my friends. I try to work for anything that I cannot buy so I don't request a lot unless I see friends wanting to draw. Only reason I made a request in your journal, which I tend to not do unless its a Raffle or Contest, was because I looked through your gallery first and liked what I saw.
The only fool in the end, is the person who got nothing from this.
Though I'm not surprised- People like free things. I'm sure most people would be quite grateful to receive free art, even if they fail to display it when initially requesting it.
It's weird, since I did have art block many, many years ago and from what I remembered, some were really thankfully, some mildly entertained, and the rest just indifferent. Some of the people I do commissions for more or less just say, "Thank you. Looks great," and that is it. So it is really hard to tell how grateful people can be when I've seen that in the follow-ups before.
I knew that one of my friends got upset when he just found out about this and I even spreaded the word yesterday to my other friends about the free art journal. I was honestly hoping to see more of them respond by now of this little prank that was pulled off and I did get a laugh out of this. I hope this doesn't mean that I'm one of those who were rude and just wanted to jump in. I just simply went along with it. XD
And I'll take a laugh as long as you're not going to punch me on top of it!
But nonetheless I did get some giggles out of it and I got some responses from my friends telling them that it was a practical joke. Besides, I don't know any artist who would accept that many requests i your journal from yesterday unless they have so much of an artblock that they're willing to save themselves out to anyone for free art. XD
It seemed real..... though maybe I should of thought about that better, considering what day it was...... don't believe everything you read on April Fool's Day. It might not be real. Really fell for this though..... thought it was actually a chance for free art from you.
(Also should of said please...... really need to do that.) I was polite and just wanted something simple, not too hard. I wasn't demanding. Actually thought you were taking requests.
Hard to believe this was a prank..... really should of known better.
Sorry that I caught you with this one.
Eh, probably should of known better, but I wasn't really thinking that it would be a prank. I am careful on April Fool's Day, but I just fell for this one. Didn't seem to be very obvious that it was a prank.
I just thought I'd reply as I like your art a lot. Heh. Yeah. I'm just one of several that responded to that journal that got fooled. I shouldn't feel bad about it. Just didn't seem like a prank.
Wolf/Snow Leopard hybrid with a fox-esque tail.
Yeah. It's a mess. xD
It's supposed to be so very bad and bright and everything, but not to the point where your brain can't handle it in one go - if it was any more complicated, your mind would automatically start breaking it down into more easily digestable parts.
AKA. this: http://forums.furaffinity.net/threa.....sal-to-all-you
I plan on using them when I get things going, which may be a while for now. I did take a look at both dA and FA as well as the differences amongst them. It was interesting and I actually did something like that, in which I submitted my proposal to different websites with furrys. The results have been surprising in a few cases. And you're right, it doesn't prove anything about furrys, but about internet behavior, yes it does. That is a side goal of what I'm doing, since I'm mainly focusing on furrys of the internet. Thanks for the info though! ^.^
