So what is this Steel Artist Challenge thing?
Update: I'm going to be shortening this to 150 pieces. It's been almost 7 years at this point and I'm done with what I was trying to do with this challenge and do some other things! Between burn out, mental health challenges and a complete life upheaval, it's been a hell of a ride...
I figure I'd just make a journal to link to people who ask about it! I should also make a note that this is just my take on it. I did not start this idea, I'm just propagating it.

So what is this Steel Artist thing?
The steel artist challenge (by my reckoning) is the next stage up of the iron artist challenge, at 200 images. The iron artist challenge is where you draw 100 images to a specific set of criteria. This could be completing everything in a specific amount of time, working on your anatomy, etc. For me the iron artist were full cell shaded pictures, and thus a bit harder than what some people took on, but on the flip side I had no time limit on myself, and was fairly flexible in my goals throughout the project. My main goals were colour usage and speed of completing the actual drawing.
What are your goals for this then?
The steel artist challenge for me is going to be speed paints focusing on working to a time limit, getting the piece looking good in a certain amount of time, and as a consequence, reducing my tendency to over work my pictures. Also I'm hoping it will increase my ability to work on the fly, and become more accurate with anatomy and proportions, as I have to get it right quickly to keep to the time limit.
I'm also hoping to again work on colour, and to work on adding more texture into my work without having to always resorting to textures (as in, use more custom and interesting brushes). I'm also going to experiment with different levels of zoom and cropping depending on what the piece calls for as at the moment, and playing with various different compositions when the piece calls for it.
What are the tiers?
The tiers are the payment scale I'm using for these commissions. One being the cheapest and three being the most expensive. The higher the tier, the more time will be spent on that piece, thus the more detailed it will end up looking. Mostly this is expressed in the characters, sometimes it might have a decent background with it. I tend to rough everything in then do the important things first (face, torso/body, and leave the extremities till last).
How can I get one?
Check on my profile to see if I'm still accepting them!
What's next!?
I guess it'll be titanium and then tungsten carbide or something! I'll figure that out when I get there xD

I wish SO hard I could fave comments XD
...wait.
Replying to a 2 month old comment? Seriously?
Now if it was 100 in a month, that would definitely be something to prove and gloat about while still keeping up with quality.

Don't wanna lose your temper.
And I guess it just depends on what your goal is. Mine will and probably always be based on the individual piece speed rather than the challenge as a whole as I have health problems crop up from time to time which can hamper me working on art, so it'd be unrealistic and unnecessarily stressful to try and hold myself to a certain overall time scheme like that.
I say you oughtta go hardcore and go for the boron-nitride-base ceramic composite artist challenge. It's gotta be, like, 6% more drawings in it than the diamond artist challenge. :D
And hell yes xD
I was just going iron to iron alloys of increasing awesomeness.
My geek is NOT showing. What are YOU talking about?
...the Unobtanium idea works too. :P
But I think a vibranium-adamantium alloy would be better -- hardest material known to man + material that reflects all vibrations put into it back toward the source = WIN
Kudos to you for taking this to the next step and good luck! ;3
AUSTRALIUM!
NEW ZEALANDIUMPounamuniniumnm! The Iron Artist Challenge (I believe) was meant to be, "Pay me, Small desc, I pump out the picture fast, no review process and it's more of a Sketch-glorified" Because the chefs on Iron Chef make many small dishes super fast on the fly with little to no idea as to what they'll have been otld to make before the competition.
So, translating that back to Artistry, if you're not taking fast pump-'em-out-commisions (Iron Artist) a "Steel Artist Challenge" is.... just... regular commissions? It's not on the 'count' As Mobianfox I think was the big name in starting this 100 sketch challenge, he's up to 200 and beyond. He just calls them commisions wave ### and so on. Because yes, I see artists calling these, Iron artist, Steel artist, Bronze Artist, Gold Artist.... I mean... just getting al ittle overboard here.
Cheers
They're not just normal commissions because they have a different set up and specific goals compared to my other commissions. In this case, working on my speed painting skills and my colour and composition and the other things I described above. You'll notice my large full colour commissions are still just commissions. My little journal commissions are still just commissions. They don't have fancy names to link them all together, because they're normal commissions. I do sets like this because they challenge me and I find them fun, so don't read too far into it xD
5 minutes per image, no more.
:3
So when I see picture after picture with the word Iron Artist attached, It makes no sense when all you are doing is drawing for yourself. Keeping a certain theme really is more of exploring your own personal style. I don't find the use of the word Iron Artist in this aspect to really indicate a challenge or a competition, especially due to you are the only competition and that you are not going against other competitors.
That is just my personal take on it anyhow :P
I mean no offence of course. I just think it should be more challenging, and if one is to take the challenge, someone should be hosting it, judging it, and awarding the winners.
As far as I know the iron artist challenge on FA has nothing to do with with the convention event. And even if they were, they are two very separate things now, so you don't do yourself any favours comparing the two challenges.
To draw 100 pictures all with a simular theme. XD I can say The theme is I drew it and I can complete all the pictures over a span of 3 years if I wanted. :P See my point?
Hmm try 100 in a week, and pick a certain theme along with a certain degree of effort. (Stick figures will be quite lazy lol)
The reason I mentioned the compeition is because when you are pitted against another that shares your same skill level and you are timed to create a master piece. It puts alot of pressure and stress on you, hence being a challenge. And putting yourself to and over the limits it what really makes it fun.
I thank you for repling back. Perhaps I'll try this challenge some time. When I have the time of course. Current life has put me back even with commissions. =/
I hope nothing I said upsetted you, your last statement came off a bit timid though I understand fully. I just was a bit confused for one, and I enjoy a good challenge time to time so I didn't feel it to be that challenging. But I thank you for clearing up some of the mis-information.
I'm not very competitive so pitting me against other people has no appeal, and extra stress is really not something I need in my life right now xP And you seem to be using a very specific definition of the word "challenge" while I am using another*, so I have no desire to argue the point. And no, you didn't upset me, it's just not what I want this challenge to be for me.
You should totally try it sometime though, the great thing about it is you can set your own goals and restrictions and what not and make it as easy or as difficult as you like! And if you want to itch your competitive scratch see if you can find someone else to do it with you :D
*Challenge: Your "A call to engage in a contest, fight, or competition." vs my " A test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking."
Health problems? I didn't know you had any limitation like that. As for my self, I do have some physical limitations due to that I have Muscular Dystrophie which has caused atrophy in my hands, legs and most of my body. Even though I am able to walk and run when I can, I can't do it for long and tire very quickly. Just walking Anthrocon this year was a Huge challenge on my behalf as all I had was a cane to walk with. Next year I will definatly bring a wheel chair because my feet were swollen to the size of grapefruits.
I always liked compeitition, having friends to challenge and play with and the such makes challenges a bit more interesting to do. XD I play enough games solo and I just get bored alot when I don't have someone else to play with. Same with a challenge. There fun but can become boring fast. So I guess friends keeps the intrest up a bit, and new minds give new thoughts on how to complete a goal. Two heads are better than one after all. But that is me..
Yeah I should give it a try sometime, XD Only odd thing about it is that I am not an artist *technicly am* I am a Musician So how would I go about doing it XD ?
:P And Belive it of not you are my watcher as I am yours. Perhaps one day we can work on the challenge together heh.
Time right now has been a bit hecktic though so have to find the time to start. =/ Alot of things came up in life that really has pulled me away from things I love, music especially. And Last Thursday just made things worse when my brother got in a bad car accident.
There is also a link on my profile for future reference :)
But I do like what I see.
And you should totally do an iron artist or something. They're really fun and they help you improve HEAPS :D
idk why, but is funny and i can do more anatomy practice ^^
Thank you Zambuka for this information <3
then i saw your Challenge and it helped me so much ^^
also i'm really respectful to such amazing artists who helps others to know and gives feedback to questions :3
so wait a lil' gift from me ^^
no problems <3
