Sixty Things That Piss Me Off - A RRRex Meme for Artists
13 years ago
I don't do as much artwork nowadays as I did when I first got into the fandom. That's largely because I don't have as much time as I used to - but it's also partly because these days, I've lost much of the joy I used to get from creating pictures through the never-ending pursuit of technical improvement.
Part of the problem with trying to produce artwork to your best possible standard is it becomes more like work than play. When it gets like that, it also means you can easily become irritated by the smallest things which subsequently put you off bothering with art altogether.
Having been drawing on and off for most of my life - and having been drawing for the fandom for five years - over time I have experienced a whole variety of feelings and irritations with the wonderful adventure that is being an artist. But I find myself wondering whether anybody else has these same experiences.
As such, I have formed a list of sixty feelings and problems I know I have experienced as an artist. Many refer to problems while drawing with pencil/pen and paper, others when using a tablet, some relate to the hazards of secret fetish drawing and others even allude to the fickle obsession one can have with FA statistics.
Note that these are not malicious ramblings about being an artist in the fandom. It is merely a light-hearted and somewhat cathartic reflection upon the inner conflicts and little frustrations one can go through as an artist. I dare say somebody has done something like this before, but I just wanted to have a go from the basis of my own experience.
So, TO ALL YOU ARTISTS - please tell me if you have ever:-
1. Had to draft a picture more than five times.
2. Been using an eraser on a picture only for the paper to suddenly fold up.
3. Felt ready to roar like The Incredible Hulk after your pencil lead snaps.
4. Ruined a picture by drawing something too dark which can't be erased properly.
5. Ruined a picture with a big smudge mark.
6. Ruined a picture by accidentally tearing the paper in some farcical fashion.
7. Sat/leant on a drawing and left a really annoying fold right through it.
8. Rubbed a hole in a piece of paper or ended up with the surface peeling from too much erasing.
9. Been drawing on an uneven surface and punctured the paper with your pencil.
10. Sneezed/drooled on your piece of paper and left one of those funny translucent grey dots on the page.
11. Spilled a drink or dropped food on your drawing.
12. Had a sudden noise cause you to jerk suddenly and inadvertently draw a massive line over your picture.
13. Had a pencil break and leave a massive black mark on one of the most intricate parts of your picture.
14. Finished a drawing which you are pleased with only to mirror/flip it and suddenly discover 10,000 errors.
15. Erased something you felt just didn't quite look right, then regretted it when you realise you've ended up redrawing it 1,000 times and only succeeded in making it look worse.
16. Spent hours drawing something and not getting it right, only to come back after a break and miraculously draw it perfectly first time, rendering the previous few hours a confusing waste.
17. Noticed a problem with an almost completed picture which requires you to start all over again in order to fix it.
18. Lost your pencil/pen/rubber midway through drawing a picture.
19. Ground away an entire pencil through a pencil sharpener because it either keeps breaking the lead or leaves it with a really crappy tip.
20. Drawn a perfect picture on A4 only to run out of room for one little detail and discover you need to redraw the whole damn thing on A3, or start attaching additional sheets of paper.
21. Been colouring/shading on a textured surface which has left an annoying pattern on your picture.
22. Accidentally used the wrong colouring pencil/pen on part of your picture and then attempted to cover it up, only to end up mixing the colours into a weird muddy tone.
23. Been working in the hot weather next to a fan and tried to draw a picture whilst your paper is being blown about everywhere.
24. Delayed the completion of a picture by having to stop every 5 minutes to masturbate over it.
25. Realised your knowledge of anatomy is crap and you are trying to draw outlines for muscles or bones in places where you don't even know whether muscles or bones exist.
26. Started drawing something from an angle which you then realise was a really bad idea.
27. Started drawing a complex pose which you then realise was a really bad idea.
28. Completed a perfect picture of a famous character only to belatedly realise you've somehow missed drawing a crucial identifying detail that everybody will pick up on.
29. Misinterpreted how an everyday object is shaped and drawn it based on that misconception, resulting in loads of people saying "that looks weird".
30. Been shading a picture only to realise that for some reason you just cannot get the light to look right on one part of the picture.
31. Drawn a picture which simply refuses to scan/photograph properly.
32. Lost an hour or more of work through your computer crashing when you haven't saved your picture.
33. Lost your work through a file or disk drive becoming corrupted.
34. Discovered that you've done too many steps to undo everything since the moment you first went wrong on a picture.
35. Been drawing with a tablet and had to press Ctrl+Z 50 times until you finally get the line you want.
36. Been drawing a straight line with a tablet which then suddenly kinks for absolutely no bloody reason at all.
37. Drawn a perfect line with a tablet which is then subsequently ruined by Adobe's auto smoothing.
38. Had your mouse and tablet interfering with each other in a way which makes the pointer jump all over the place.
39. Accidentally saved your picture with all the layers merged.
40. Accidentally saved over a newer version of your picture with an older one.
41. Done a perfect picture only to realise your monitor is not calibrated properly and discover that the picture actually doesn't look anything like you thought it did to anybody else.
42. Spent ages adding little details to your picture only to realise they can't be seen once you resize it.
43. Drawn an awesome multi-panel comic which you then realise you can’t structure effectively into pages without losing half of it through cropping/resizing everything to ridiculous proporitions.
44. Looked back at a picture you did several years ago and realised you've still not been able to better it.
45. Been creating a fetish picture which turns you on right up until the moment you complete it, after which point it is forever a flaccid affair.
46. Noticed an error on a fetish picture you have drawn which subsequently kills any attraction you have for it because you can't take your eye off what you did wrong.
47. Lost a drawing that you really wouldn't want your family/friends to find.
48. Temporarily lost a drawing that you really wouldn't want your family/friends to find, and only finding it after giving yourself a panic attack upon the discovery of its disappearance.
49. Had somebody inappropriately walk in on you drawing a picture that you really wouldn't want them to see, resulting in a mad scramble to hide the evidence.
50. Had somebody find one of your pictures that you really didn't want them to see after which they make an awkward comment/question.
51. Felt envious of another artist's ability.
52. Gotten a bit obsessed by your FA watch/favourite/comment/pageview counter.
53. Felt a bit annoyed when you find an artist who has more watches than you even though you're sure your work is better, especially if you've been a member of FA for longer than they have.
54. Felt a bit annoyed when you find an FA user who has more watches than you yet everything in their gallery is a commission which they didn't draw.
55. Felt a bit annoyed when you find an artist who can match or better your art standard in a fraction of the time.
56. Submitted a piece to FA which you spent ages on and think is brilliant but gets a distinctly underwhelming response from everybody else.
57. Obsessed over one little piece of criticism somebody has left on your submission.
58. Felt constricted by FA's 1280x1280 dimension limit.
59. Suffered from Artist's Block.
60. Felt like giving up art altogether.
Feel free to add your responses here or on your own profiles (if you do, link back to this page and let me know so I can see!). This isn't really a serious attempt to propagate a meme - I'm just interested to know whether other artists go through the same things I do.
And to anybody who has experienced all sixty - we need to get together and have a good collaborative MOAN.

But yes, it is quite a lot.
Lol!
i'm more sorry for you for having felt all of them. X3
How many rang true for you?
mainly that i haven't redrawn a piece over 5 times. XD
well i suppose if it helps then its always worth doing. ^^;
To be honest, I didn't think so many of those points would apply to me. x3 Mind if I repost this?
Feel free to post back - could you link to this as the original?
Oh I referred it back alright xD
Many others, my good bunny sir?
;lmao:
Hi, in my opinion, you forget on one things.... when the PC suddenly turns off...hehe sorry, i meaby bad understand and i don´t finde it there...
In my opinion, i´m very short time here and i draw short time, but i could say, that i find 30 problems in your jurnal, which i experienced... I was angry if somebody give me only comments: what you use for programe... if somebody don´t answer me on picture, that i made for him...and next... I want with drawing end too, but one things is for me importent...my friends here... They are so amazing and i´m not so good for him...i mean...
You are very great painter and you make nice picture... I would like draw like you, but i have a feel, that many people want only friends, who can make really cool picture...I like comments of people, who don´t make amazing picture, because i feel, that they are more happy for this... I apologize for this long text, but you wanted answer...hehe
I haven't specifically mentioned the PC turning off, though that is pretty much the same as when it crashes and you lose your work - which is in the list.
And thank you for your understand....
Giggity.
...
<quag>OH!</quag>
Glad to see my pain is shared...!
I presume your latter point refers to 45?
53 and above seem a bit terrible to read, but I can imagine everyone has that in some shape or form, but feel a bit miffed posting it...! I just want to say that this list, does get to show that side not many could figure about you out unless they knew you personally, and it was an interesting list to read! Keep up the awesome work as always RRRex! ^__^
For the record though, Shiro, as somebody who doesn't do many pictures in digital media from scratch, I admire your abilities on that front.
We all have jealousy and rivalry, but that is minor when there are great folks like you and I try to make the world go round with support and care! And I would never have guessed that you admire my abilities! I admire yours tenfold!
Thanks very much!
Despite these little things that can get in the way, never give up :3
That's all i got.
Lol!!
And omg #51 i get all the time which then leads to #60 =/
And 24 is surprisingly common, by the way...
As much as it sucks to say it, it is a sad truth around here that there is little point in writers seeking to compare the level of reaction to their work with that of artists - invariably, they cannot be of the same order of magnitude. It is utterly unjust, but it is the status quo.
So believe me, I can sympathise.
But I should at this point stress, as I have done in a previous response above, that the 'FA annoyances' are not representative of me craving popularity. That is not the case. It is merely the product of artistic envy of another's ability or recognition relative to the effort put in by oneself.
19. Mechanical pencils FTW! I have a range of sizes from 0.2mm to 2mm loaded with leads from H2 to B.
24. >_> <_<
29. I have a pet peeve of artists who draw bullets shot out of the gun with the cartridge CASE still attached! >_<
34. That's why I use bazillion layers when drawing. Anytime I start on something I might want to tweak later or undo => new layer!
32. I once bought an indie graphics editor called Pixel that was really good... Except it crashed at least once every 30 minutes. :(
That's one of the few times I've been bitten by software purchases since it took just long enough that it didn't come up while I was test driving it. It never got fixed either, the version I bought was last one that came out.
38. I once had put my tablet out of the way, but then accidentally nudged something on my desk that pushed the pen out of the holder onto the tablet... It was driving me crazy until I noticed :P
39. I almost never 'merge all'... Either I save to PNG (which automatically saves a merged version), or use control-shift-c to 'copy merged' if I need a merged version for some other reason. (I use Paint Shop Pro 7, not Photoshop if PS behaves differently from that)
41. Heh. Can't say I have, but that's because my main display is carefully calibrated, period. I have a second (and third) monitors that are cheap LCDs that I also use to check the image (since most people have a monitor like that), and I have a Mac laptop that I also use to check images since Mac's use different gamma.
46. Not my own picture, but a few times on pictures drawn by someone else. >_<
48. Not in real life, several times in a dream nightmare. >_<
49. Alt-tab! Oh Shit, the browser image wasn't any better! Monitor off! OFF!
This is one reason I absolutely refuse to have a desk with my back to the door.
51. Every day. I'm pretty good at colouring and technical drawing, but I'm not very good at drawing people.
52. I CRAVE comments! I love them! MUST get more! I'm not bothered about other stats though. I'm sad though when I draw an image myself (usually those are clean art) and they get 1/10th as many comments/views/favs as the pr0n I commission.
53-55. Not really because I'm one of those #54 people :P (Majority of my gallery is art I've commissioned)
56. Yes. Almost every time I submit an image of my own, since I spend a lot of time and effort on them.
19 - Yes, I only recently embraced the joy of mechanical pencils, and they have been a blessing in that regard!
29 - Heh! I've not thought of that! I dare say it's a mistake I would easily have made. But you raise an excellent example of my point - there are many objects out there that people have perhaps not handled in real life or objects that possess technical variations which artists subsequently draw incorrectly.
39 - Oh, but I'm not a Photoshop user either! I'm a Paint Shop Pro fan - started on version 4 YEARS ago then moved to 6, 7.04 and now I use Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3. If you ever fancy upgrading, I would strongly recommend the latter - I was hesitant as to whether Corel would have changed Jasc's old program beyond recognition, but they haven't; if you're good with PSP7, you'll find PSPPX3 is reassuringly familiar!
41 - My experience on that score comes primarily from the time when I used to operate with a CRT monitor. If you look back to one of my journals in 2008, I had a period where I rather obsessively performed gamma corrections on every single submission in my gallery after discovering that my monitor was displaying far too dark for the first year of my FA membership.
46 - Lol! Actually that doesn't bother me so much, because I can't attach the blame for said error to myself!
49 - I feel your pain! I remember one time when my computer crashed at that very moment and my monitor had no power button/switch, so the only course of action I could take in the panic was to yank the power plug for my PC out of the socket. Then all they walked in on was the falling hum of my PC fan and me looking rather wide-eyed...
51 - When you say people, do you mean humans? If so, I wouldn't worry - I'm crap at human faces.
52 - I used to crave comments, but these days I'm actually more interested by the favourites a picture receives because I've found them to be a more reliable gauge of reaction to my work.
54 - Heh! Oh I should clarify, I'm not having a moan at people like yourself who primarily commission others. It's just one of those niggles that can spawn the ugly shadow of artistic envy!
Little tip - always keep your hand spread out over as much of the page as possible, and if you are erasing anywhere near the corner, put your hand on the centre and press a finger on the tip of the page. Usually helps.
1-9, 11-13, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25-32, 39-40, 44, 47, 49-51, and 58-60
Charles.
I'd like to add that feel when you start on a picture, you're half way complete, then start on another picture, and it keeps going on like that. I have soo much unfinished work piled up.
Let's put it this way: of the fifteen projects in my 'Great Unfinished Collection' from May last year (which in truth is still only a small selection from the total collection of unfinished work), I've still only finished five of them!
#24 is indeed a major issue. The biggest problem is not stopping for fappage; it's post-fappage delay before getting on with it again!
Lol!
I simply can't go 'all digital' myself - I just hate drawing with the tablet so much, I restrict that method to animating only. But as demonstrated, traditional methods come with their own buttload of problems...
I get as far as inking or flat colors before the picture really starts to distract me. haha!
I've gone all digital since I got my second tablet, a wacom intuos4. Then after that I never touched another piece of paper again. I'm currently using the Cintiq now. So its sort of like traditional and digital combined.:)
I know what you mean about 'going back' to traditional means. Last year when I was doing lots of animating work, I got so used to using the tablet that it was hard to draw on paper again!
So many people have told me that I would benefit greatly from a clean vectorised look as well.
As for my art pile, HOLY FUCKING SHIT ON A STICK... I had 3 accounts running all at once a while back and had to permanently stop one because I just didn't have the time. Another account is just kinda floating about with the odd update once every four months or so, and then I had to make a new account for my employer (Achilles) who has divided the work I do for him into 2 categorises meaning that Im back to 3 groups of art again.
Needles to say the lists of pictures in varying stages of development is insane.
As for being envious of someone else popularity. I know that pain all too well since I strictly do not draw genitalia which alienates me from 99% of potential fans.
I have to congratulate you on this fine list. Not only was it an entertaining read but it shows us your human qualities with flaws we all know and share (I don't mean that in a bad way... The human bit that is!!!)
I think the vectorised look is overrated. Most of my pictures have the pencil outline from the original drawing - aside from the cleanest, most stylistic cartoon work, I never feel the need to ink.
Add to that, I felt a bit as if you took art, and with it your own rather 'perfect' style, too serious really. You always try to achieve a better and better art style, you strive to be as detailled as you can, but you seem not to accept the increasing chances of mistakes that accomplish your always-improving art the better you get. Somehow I also feel pity for your misfortune: I think in some situations you'd need someone like Rexar who gives you a hug and tells you "It doesn't matter babe, keep going on, I believe in you!" right?
Also, I really liked #24 on this list May I ask for more detail on that aspect?
I wouldn't say it's unlucky to have experienced all of these problems - from what I've seen in response to this journal, I think they are pretty common experiences for most artists. It's just part and parcel of doing artwork on a regular basis - the more time you spend doing it, the more likely you are to encounter a variety of problems.
But you're right, my attempts to improve have hampered my enjoyment of art. I get more annoyed at my mistakes because I feel like I shouldn't be making them by now. Still, your little reference to Rexar is absolutely how I think of him!
From the way you talk i also recognize you're not really a laid-back person who takes things easy, say to yourself 'I'm happy with how this pic has turned out, a little mistake here, a small shading detail is missing - who cares! I'm happy with it and I see myself in this piece' So regarding your own artwork, you really should consider not forcing yourself to perfectionism but rather to greater enjoyment in what you do.
As for 'admiring other artists', that isn't really a drive for me - I do what I do to better my own ability, not imitate or match up to somebody else's. If you've extrapolated that from points 51-55 or whatever, you've rather gotten the wrong idea.
Since getting a job I've found I have had less time to work on my art, and when I do finally get some time I don't feel like drawing at all. I have backlogs of sketches and half finished pieces that I just haven't felt motivated to work on lately.
56, 59, 60 have been bothering me quite a bit lately
I think one of the biggest difficulties with balancing a job and trying to do art in your spare time is that you really need to enjoy the artistic procedure, otherwise that will start to feel like work too. I used to find it very difficult coming home from a 45hr-a-week job and motivating myself to do another 12+ hours of work on a picture over the weekend.
(I reckon my backlog of sketches and half-finished pieces could give yours a run for its money. I've got at least 30 individual images at an early colouring stage that I still haven't finished - never mind the vast number of ideas still at the pencil-and-paper stage...!!)
Thanks for replying :3
I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before but I'm a huge fan of your art, you've done fantastic work! ^^
