One way to prevent them from seeing what you do online is to to everything through an SSP. They'll know which sites you're on, but they won't be able to read the data being transferred.

Even better, use an encrypted proxy. That way, they can't read the transferred data AND they don't even know which site you're on.

Getting past being spied is easy for me and anyone who knows. But this is still something beyond horrid, and unacceptable in any country past North Korea's level or something. It will destroy the internet in large part otherwise, which apparently some companies and the government are obsessed with succeeding in doing.

There are other important things I would like to point out about this, which I didn't fully get to last night. Those are points that I believe everyone should carefully look into and inform others about.

This will allow your ISP to spy on everything you do. If they spy your data they will be able to read your emails, IM's, how many times you called your boss a moron, how many times you sex RP'd online... everything. Theoretically, they can even spy on what you discuss with your co-workers, and secretly share private information with the competitor of the company you work for. Or if you access a porn website, they could tell everyone about it and the things you look at (even your parents or husband / wife). Next, if you access a website about something your admin dislikes, they can easily invent false claims against you to bully you. Imagine being cut off the internet because you are gay or accessed 4chan. Or going to school one day to find out the head teacher mysteriously knows you're gay or something you only said privately, then everyone finds out and you get bullied. Also, what do you think will happen to people who post bad things about America's leadership, the US army, uncover war crimes or government abuses, and that sort of thing... especially with the NDAA being around?

If anyone thinks this won't happen because "they will be nice people and will only use this to catch thieves", you are more than naive. No, it WILL be used for this and much worse if it happens. I don't even need to point out what power hungry and control hungry characters are behind this.

But even if (just for the sake of pretending) this will only be used against pirates. Those pirates might have an online job, not to mention friends they talk with and other activities (unrelated to piracy). Cutting anyone off the internet at this day could cost many their jobs, and some even their lives. And then... being humiliated in spite by being sent to classes about copyright and scolded like a 2 year old by some internet provider? This by itself is a hateful practice, which as a mentality was used by communist and nazi regimes to show their power. Those who spoke against the regime but didn't pose a big threat weren't killed, but instead beaten in public and left without food and water for days, to show an example to those who disobeyed. At a different scale, this is the same mentality being put in practice here with those "lessons", against people who might have done as little as downloading a song. We live in a mad world.

Alongside the practical consequences, this is also an insult to all internet users. We are being qualified as thieves automatically, and investigated prematurely to make sure we aren't stealing. Using the internet will now be a suspicion of theft by itself... also known as being accused of a crime before you even commit it. In any normal world, people would be outraged at such a slap in the face. It's the same as installing cameras in everyone's homes, watching them when they eat / go pee / have sex / etc. just to be sure they aren't raising cannabis in their house. Christ... not even Gaddafi or Kim Jong Il dared to do this.

As for hoping that some ISP's will stay free, no. This is simply a new attempt to pass a law worse than SOPA. Currently, they paid or constrained ISP's to pretend they've taken the decision on their own. After people would have cooled down and enough accepted this practice, they would also pass a law to make the whole thing obligatory. It's basically doing it before it's legal, so people get used to it first and they can later legalize it more easily. That's why everyone needs to act urgently.

One thing's for sure: They are up-front trying to make America a dictatorship, and I'm not talking just about this event (the NDAA is another thing). Many laws worthy of the worst dictatorships are being forcefully pushed in the US. The world has a very important choice to take in the next years, and if the wrong one is taken expect us to return to a medieval terror-based leadership. This isn't a theory or exaggeration, it's happening under our eyes.

Once again, please post about this everywhere you can and spread the word. Make a topic on all forums you visit (if there isn't one already), post it on your Facebook / Twitter, and if you own a blog publish an article. We should also contact every news TV station or website and pressure them to speak about it. Please make people aware of the things I wrote in this post also (feel free to re-post all of it) so they can better see what we're dealing with (as many still think it would only stop piracy and it's ok). We have a disaster beyond words in front of us, if everything we read about this is true.

Yeah, the news are controlled by the gov usually. That's why I said pressure them to do it... for SOPA they only spoke because they were constrained by how popular it was getting, and everyone was up in flames about it.

The government has a limited involvement in this, if any. They said they support the idea, but the people actually behind it are the media companies. SOPA died because the technical compainies, Apple and Google and the like, didn't like it. What I'm saying is most cable providers are also ISPs, so you couldn't pressure them to air this on TV. Maybe over-the-air broadcast, but it'd never get to people that have cable TV.

Yeah, I forgot that. My provider (a small independent provider who are very nice people, and actually taught me how to do sharing and torrents years ago when I got internet) don't offer TV, just net. But I'm seeing a lot of packets are phone + TV + internet, so that is true. Still, the TV stations themselves are not necessarily owned by the providers who give you TV (same as websites you access aren't owned by your ISP) and unless they'd cut transmission to that TV station over it I don't think this necessarily plays a big role.

That's the most important thing. My hope and suggestion is a harsh riot of sorts... both in the US and in Europe for similar things being attempted here by the UK (another one of the modern dictatorships). I don't like violent things happening in any country, but at this point I don't see any other choice to send a signal... nothing else will calm those people down. If something bad doesn't happen we will end up without any rights, and in the next 10-20 years might be afraid to even go out on the street without being arrested for something (with the way things are going overall).

Again I'm not trying to instigate to violence. But as bad as those waves of oppression are getting I see no other way than people throwing a molotov cocktail in their window, and I hope a major riot will break out.

FYI: At this point, I'm pondering posting several articles mentioning both this and other extreme things I'm aware of (like the NDAA) and instigating people to go outside and riot. Once people stand up, throw those away, and change everything so that interest groups can't take decisions any more, things will get a lot better. They will be monitoring, and removing certain things of course. They have no hold or control over your actual internet speed. Your internet providers do. They can't reduce it, when your providers have contract to hold.

i was downloading movies at school one time but it was legal. I gave my friend money to put some digital copies that I got with those triple DVD packs. and i got kicked off the computers cause i was "illegally" downloading them. I showed them the discs and everything and they said it was irrelevant.

It will only take one instance where someone is *NOT* pirating software or music, and the offended party can nail them for the following reasons:

1) Unwarranted search and seizure.

Unfortunately, those waves of authoritarianism are happening worldwide, and some in countries with the biggest expectations. Not long ago I found Japan actually initiated ACTA. Then America had SOPA / PIPA at the same time, and now it has this. Australia implemented internet censorship 2 years ago or so, completely banning porn from the entire country under the disgusting pretext of protecting kids! The UK... 2 years ago half of Youtube was blocked over there for copyright reasons (like in third world countries) and at this day they're working on new ways to censor the internet similar to SOPA, which are said to have already passed. Germany doesn't allow selling games with gore and violence at all in the shops, and on Youtube almost anything in German is censored (even music, some things under the pretext of nazi talk and jokes). I used to like Obama. Even after he signed the NDAA I hoped he might be a nice person. Then I heard he supported ACTA even if he was against SOPA / PIPA. Now if he supported this, there are no more excuses. Out of the leadership with that dude, time for someone more normal and competent to come... which unfortunately is very hard to find on the "little list of presidents you can elect every 4 years" almost all countries

I have little hope for America any more. If Obama goes, the Republicans come in, and with them, we'll lose whatever freedoms remain.

Sooner or later, we're going to hit a critical breaking point, and people will realize that this isn't the way things are supposed to be. I don't know what is going to have to happen for us to get there though.

da **** if something like this does go through for the company I get internet through then I'm going to tell people to stop using internet for a few months. lets see how internet providers handle it if a good chunk of their customers stop using internet until they get rid of the stuff that invades people's privacy.

I'm a bit confused here. I followed the links to torrentfreaks.com, and the stories about ISP monitoring use seem restricted to BitTorrent and other P2P use. * not general web use, http and ftp!* Sure y'all can be paranoid and argue slippery-slope. As to internet freedom, ISPs charge for access as you agreed, and freedom of speech does *not* mean you get to copy other people's work!

Now if someone downloads against copyright, they *deserve* to be outed and embarassed -- thry're breaking the law! As long as this happens to rich white billionaires too, it's proper. As to anyone in government knowing what websites I visit, how I roleplay or what kinky stories I write, I say it's none of their goddam business!

Are y'all really so mad you might not be allowed to steal some underpaid writer's work that you think the government is tyrannical and thus to be replaced?
