Legend of the Skulltail
Skulltails have existed for as long as intelligent life has. They are capable of reproducing though they are mostly created in their original state. A skulltail is formed when someone dies but they still have a very strong, very important purpose to fulfill. That purpose is so strong that a guiding spirit is sent to find their soul in the form of a skull. That spirit grants the divined soul a physical undefined body. They have no features of any kind other then the gender they were originally born with. They are shapeless and undefined.
The guiding skull helps them to move about the world and find features that suit them nicely. They can take the shape of a single animal or mix and match various parts from different ones if they so choose, giving them a wide variety of options for their final form. They can be a lemur with feline ears or a wolf pup with feline paws and fennec fox ears. When they do take their final form the skull spirit embeds itself in the tip of their tail so that they never have to be without their guiding insight and can fulfill their purpose.
Unfortunately… not all skulltails listen to their guiding spirit. Some end up falling down the path of corruption. When that happens the skull spirit withers and becomes corrupted as well. The skull becomes brittle, chipped, and even broken in some cases. It is filled with impure thoughts and feelings. Once a skull spirit and skulltail have been deeply corrupted it becomes very difficult to reverse the process. Their guiding mentor becomes just as impure as they are and they become lost.
However, a healthy skulltail who doesn’t fall to corruption and listens to their guiding spirit from the beginning becomes a kind and gentle being, albeit a bit misunderstood and somewhat… feared… due to their rather unnatural appearance. Most people have a strong sense of superstition in regards to them. But if they fulfill their intended purpose they are rewarded with being allowed to keep their new physical body and start a new life for themselves and even fall in love and mate.
Skulltails can be wonderful and evil, depending on which path they choose to go down. A corrupted skulltail is something to stay away from but a pure one is certainly capable of becoming a great friend. If you come across one you should do what you can to help them fulfill their purpose. The mere fact that they exist means their purpose is very important, even if it doesn’t seem like it. So don’t be afraid, they’re not ghosts or demons, they’re just souls trying to find their way and make a few friends too!
